The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Mr.Wizard - need a little help here! Changed my nick - and now can't submit game scores to the metaverse! Anyone got any advice for a wombat?

On the scoring system. Star density would be nice to have but unfortunately it's not available on the Metaverse. Same goes for speed to victory, though I would not make it a major factor since if you win faster you submit more games anyway.

Personally, I would advocate a small penalty (15% maybe?) for alliance and tech victories. If you win a cultural or military victory, it's clear that you dominate the galaxy and could easily win via either an alliance or tech if you so chose. If you win through alliance or tech, you might be a minor power without a chance of ever getting a military or cultural victory.

Anyway, once we get the scoring details hashed out (your map rankings look ok, Ray), we would need someone who is both enthusiastic about the project and who has the technical expertise to put it on the web. Sounds like we've got a lot of people with the first. I personally lack the second.

Alright, seems like I have quite an enthusiastic response from folks in Meta. I will certainly try to write all of you in. :)

However, my next instalment is a rather special one reserved for a particular event. ;)

Welcome to the Fellowship, Barry!

We need more warriors like you to counter the threat of the Undead. :)

I feel I must refute your self proclaimed spymasters description of the fine empire of the MWC as it seems that we will be having more interaction due to your surge in the rankings.

In Meta, one of the most absurd empires would have to be the Mid-West Confederation Empire. It was not Mid-West. The empire was situated in the northwest corner. Maybe they should have called it Northwestern empire.
End of quote

Yes our empire is situated in the northwest corner of the metaverse but the founders of the MWC empire were colonists that originated from the Midwest of the United States of our homeworld Earth in the Sol system. As I'm sure we all have done as we've begun our colonization of the metaverse, we all have left our homeworlds to begin our new empires in the metaverse.

Gengsta walked up to the sea-faring ship located at a dry-dock thousands of miles from any ocean. The Mid-Western empire had called their ship The Manifest Destiny. It didn't make any sense. The ship certainly wasn't going to manifest its destiny by parking itself in a dry dock. And what were these land-lubbers doing with a ship in their possession anyways?
End of quote

As it has been explained in the MWC comms, this was clearly a ruse for your spymaster, everyone knows that even the pirates flagship DOOM does not roam the seas anymore, it clearly is a space faring vessel of much acclaim. The Manifest Destiny is the MWC's sole Excalibur class warship, that was slaved over and built with the utmost care by our hardworking citizens. While the pirates may settle for smaller quicker cheaper ships due to their heavy investment in "morale improvements", we at the MWC invest our resources in PQ and manufacturing improvements so that our systems are full of lush famable and productive worlds.

Gengsta walked up and met all the big names at the MWC: Plephart, Zoshan, Idleprocess, Kryofx, Surther. The only thing that seemed more glaring than their non-sequitirs was their hatred of the band of GROSS pirates. Their entire band shook their fist viciously as Surther gave a speech to rouse the farmers into action against the 'scourge' that was GROSS.
End of quote

Quite correct on all accounts. Some of our monikers are somewhat lame and nondescript but consistency and stability is what we value most. And yes, we do despise the pirates that loot and steal from hardworking citizens and plunder perfectly productive systems. That is why we are forever locked in conflict with GROSS.

You however in the Fellowship seem to be an honorable bunch. So we welcome your competition, members of the Fellowship. You have acquired some very big guns as of late and should prove to be a very worthy adversary. I wish you well in your travels through the metaverse. Although the borders of our two great empires are separated by a great distance, I look forward to the day when those borders will meet at the expense of those in between us.

Senator plephart

As Barry walked into the inn, several faces turned to look at him. He could tell the patrons were wondering what this shabbily dressed warrior could do for the Fellowship. He, himself, questioned his abilities, but quickly convinced himself he had made the right decision. Calmly, he walked to the bar and ordered a pint of ale. He flipped a few coppers to the barkeep and turned. It was about time he introduced himself.

"I am Barry Light, a swordsman from Rohan. I am here to vow my allegiance to this Fellowship, and hope that we may prevail over our enemies."

Several of the patrons looked at each other, then one quietly said

"Congratulations. But you're in the GROSS bar, you idiot!"

The tankard of ale sat motionless in air, as Barry disappeared out the back.

Hello fellow Fellowshipers. I claim the responsibility of removing GROSS from their high throne, where they sat in glory once, but are now a decayed and corrupt empire.

I am Gibbie, a dark elf from the underworld, and I confess to be a scaliwag on occassion, and on other occassions a dark sorcerer.

I predict glory and conquest for the Fellowship! As there is only one ring to rule them all, there is only one Fellowship.

Yikes LOL :CONGRAT:

I just submitted my 'almost' 10k game and check the baord and where do I find us... 1st place?!!?

Looks like we gained some serious recruits and the pirates must have had a defection, although it doesn't look to me like it was to us, I could be wrong however.

In two days thw world changes so drastically... must be due to the way fate warps around me ;p

It's big happy welcome to the three new members today. Barry Light, Mikelangelo, and Gibbie99 :D :D :D

And 1st in Meta :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

"Hurrah for defectors!"

Surely this day will forever be enshrined in our hearts and minds. Michael the Bard is as we speak working on a commemorative poem.

There once were some men from GROSS
Whose delusions were quite grandiose
They thought themselves thieves
But now PBP grieves
'Cause they just waved first place "Adios!"
An elegant tune! It's always good to have a bard around. Now, where did I leave my ale? ;p
Reply #298 Top
Ah, yes...the tip.

"Don't walk into the GROSS bar."

"Look both ways before you cross hyperspace."

"A Ranger in hand is better than two in the shipyard."
