The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

My strategies.

1) Colony rush (no surprise)
2) Tech Whore
3) Get all early TGs
4) Tech Whore
5) Get to Dreadnaught
6) Removing the annoying civs: Alpha strike their important planets, let the rest flip culturally.
7) The nice civs (Civs that happen to not annoy me that game, usually the Torians), ally with them, trade with them.
8) Culture bomb.

I don't do the get the one AI to attack the other AI bit. Depending on my game I am either universaly loved or universally loathed.

Good thread :)

looks like I wrote Gibbie into the story line a bit too early. Now who is going to culturally flip over from GROSS?
Gotta think hard... Maybe we can flip another one pirate over to the Fellowship and use him instead. Quick try to make a pirate defect!

Are you coming out with your own planet names, Gengsta?

Fourth installment of the War of the Worlds is out. This one has Mad Prophet in it. Finally resolved that whole meeting Yoda bit :D .

Next part should be finished early next week unless I feel like getting around to it earlier.

To Ray: I am going to be making up quite a few system names and landmarks. Just wanted to see if I could adapt any existing ones to my use.

For anyone that wants some preview, this next episode will deal almost exclusively with the new stellar arm. and more Ring of Power!!

I was going to suggest an interesting random event to stardock, but since I am going to use it in the next installment, I won't be leaking any spoilers.

Hey H5O,

Just noticed your anomalous score is gone. How did you do it? We have a brother, Alex, who needs help on his.

Does anyone know if the game switches the alignments of the races? I set the Torians to chaotic good and on the foreign relations stats screen they show as nuetral.
I set the drengins to chaotic evil and they show correctly as just evil. Every other alignment is correct as well.
Is the game balancing power in the universe based on the alignment I chose?

Thanks in advance for your explanations. :D

Yes, AIs apparently get events too so their alignments can change, though most of the time I find them retaining the alignment I set for them throughout the game.

In the Xpack, there would be a random event which allows instantanous switch in alignment.

Is the game balancing power in the universe based on the alignment I chose?

Don't get your question here. Can you elaborate?

The drengin's have few systems, and the evil Arceans have a sizable empire. The nuetral Yor are stuck in a corner. My empire is large and I am chaotic good this game. If the torians were good as well, good would have more power in the galaxy since the torians are as big as I am in terms of systems. ;)

So I thought maybe the game was balancing good and evil. :notsure:

Probably just random though. :)

Forgot to mention that the saintly altarians are few in systems as well.

Don't think the game does that on purpose, Miles. :)

I was cleaning out my saved games when I came across an early save for that map. I played it to the point where I could win an Alliance victory and then sent it off. I didn't want to go for the Military because I'd already wasted X amount of time on it in the first place, only to get an Anomalous reading.

I'm not one to throw good time after bad lightly. But it worked out for the best, I got rid of my zero. :)

What I'd recommend to Alex is to hold on to the save game until he upgrades to 1.09 (or 2.0 when the X-Pack comes out), and then try again. I submitted the original game at least 3 times under 1.05 trying to get it to work, but no love. But submitting it with 1.09 did the trick, after the replay.

I thought you received divine assistance, H5O. :)

Too bad for Alex, I think he deleted his save already.

Too bad. I had no idea I still had a copy of that game, else I'd be out of luck as well.

I don't normally keep copies of my save games. I have just a few slots that I use over and over:
"At The Beginning"
"Time For Bed"
"Wife Wants Attention"

But this game I had saved as "Time For Work", I'm not sure why. Had my Luckstone in my pocket, I guess.

Great names for your games, HFO. I'll probably be playing less often than you during classes and adopting a similiar system.

Rude? Perhaps. Indecent? Probably. But my motto is "share the trash". ;)

Gengsta:

These furry little creatures sure tire of being pirates real quick. Now they just lay around on their back drinking the booze out of the hold.

Um... that's what we were doing most of the time anyways.

Ray:

C'mon, let's have more noise from the Southern Pirates.

Indeed! The best commment out of that two-page mess.

I'm saving my game now as "Time for Lunch". :D

Thanks. :)

Actually, the way the Metaverse groups games based on time works in our favor. There's a point of diminishing returns we don't see, compared to a player that submits 5 games a week.

And beyond that, I try to play for fun, not score. Though I find myself tempted by the power of the One Ring on occasion. ;)

Hmm, Kitwarrior. Why do you think I made that comment? I wasn't really directing the comment only at them.

Another moment for me to yell at people to read my posts more carefully. And then ask yourself, are you really pirates or just drunkards?

Like I said to Wild Wombat. Look deeper, even deeper than your deepest. What do you mean your lungs are collapsing? Keep diving!

I'm not sure how to take this, Gengsta. :notsure: I'm quite confused because of the lack of information.

1. Some members of G.R.O.S.S. drink a lot in real life. Some don't. Most of us pretend we're drunkards on this forum. Those who joined us from FF behave the same way.

2. I can't tell if you're making a point about our online personas or if your getting this place confused with reality.

3. When you ask us if we're really pirates or just drunkards, you must be seeing us exclusively through your own definitions of those two terms. Why can't we be drunk pirates? What is it about your definition of pirates that disqualifies us? Can't we pretend to be pirates in our own ways?

4. Is this a moral crusade? Are you trying to save our souls from alcoholism? Is this a recruiting trick? Are you hoping for dissention by polluting the Pirates of the Southern Seas thread? Too many possible interpretations, friend. What is it you want us to understand from reading more carefully?

No hostility... er... no serious hostility intended from my end either. :) Just a fascinating series of questions you've tossed. But I'm stumped.
