The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I may not be the best or most creative writer but at least I contribute on the forums unlike the Canadians or some other empires that are inactive on the forums

Kit struggles to hold Darth Bob back. If only Gengsta had known... but it's too late. The Dark Dragon of Doom had been released!

Run away! Run away!

Correct, Darth Bob (and not about your quality). Participation is what counts most towards the environment. Interestingly, a small thread has sprung up trying to lure the Canucks out - I'd really like to hear from them and the Euros on a regulat basis.

I tried out the 'differing alignment' bonus with my latest game. Me = Good, Them = Bad. It's my understanding the opposite scenario's a little buggy right now.

It's a fairly decent bonus, I think. 13,000 for a Small map at Painful? Not too shabby.

I took Ray's advice (way back in this thread) to heart as well, selling Aphrodisiac and Regenerators immediately to keep the AI populations growing at a healthy pace.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results. I want to jump back up to a big map but I'm afraid if I do Stardock will put out another beta, and I'll be stuck finishing up my game before I can test the new stuff out.

It's remarkable how big of a time difference there is on the map sizes. It only took me 4 hours to complete the Small map today (light speed for a plodding builder like myself). It takes me a week to finish a Large map.

Well you've held on to #1 long enough in my When to Congratulate the Number One Overlord: Revised Edition for a congratulations. So congratualtions, Ray! Congratualtions on holding on to the #1 spot! :D

Um... you did laugh at my "literary critique", didn't you? You know how important approval is for me. ;) Hope I didn't go overboard... heh heh... pirate... overboard. LOL

(edit: if only i had a brain)

Way to go, H50. Yes, looking at various results, I would say the alignment bonus looks larger than anticipated.

Thanks Kit.

You and Gerakken are the two more thoughtful (as in thinker) pirates I have met. Well actually, I've not met too many pirates but you get my point. ;)

8 of us were in chat just, Chris.

Yoda, Obi, Blue, EBZ, Wombie, Kit, Ger and myself. Kit computed for me that I would need a 16k game to cross 100 so I'm cranking one right now. :D

Ray,

I keep going over IceMole's formula and I just can't get it to work for your Metaverse score. It's close for all the ways I'm messing with it, but I can't get the exact same score that's displayed. So... given the inaccuracies, I've calculated that it could take over 19k to push over 100k. It may still be less, but I can't tell since the formula isn't working with your score. Sorry dude. :( Good luck! Try to get over 19k? :notsure:

Kit!!!!!

Now you tell me! LOL

Just played the fastest Large game I've ever played. Four hours.

I've got 19k+ but I'm 30 pts short of 100,000pts !!! LOL

My hands are literally shaking now from the super fast clicks so my destiny has to wait till tomorrow.

Now Kit, this is crtical.

How many points do I need now to get me over 100,000pts?

Don't you dare get it wrong this time round.

It's not my fault! I swear! Don't turn me into a cat!

Um... play a little more for a few hundred points?

That's just it! I don't know! The formula isn't working for your score!

Actually Kit, this is kinda fun.

Now I get to be kept in suspense as to whether Staffa will now churn out 2-3 games in quick succession to cut me off from 100k.

I honestly don't have the strength and desire to play another game tonight. I will finish my quest tomorrow.

Hmm, from your the list of your scores, it looks like if you had just waited one more day, you would have had it.

Resubmit the game tomorrow. :)

Gengsta, do we really have the opportunity to submit our games a second time?

Ok, I'll try that.

Gengsta is correct, Ray - you get two (and only two) chances. I often have submission probs where I get an 'anomolous' with zero score. Reloading from the last autosave and resubbing saves me. Stardock's own docs state you get two chances to submit.

The Ringbearer always has a tough road, Ray. Instead of trying to augment your current score for those scant few extra points, shouldn't you just crank out another game? Besides, you have two scores. The official Metaverse score is 99,970, but the score on your player record is only 97,265. Looks like you have to dispel all doubt by raising the lower one to 100K as well. I would expect nothing less from the champ. :)

And watch out for Staffa. Comebacks are legendary in both boxing and the Metaverse!
According to my estimation, submitting the game tomorrow should increase his numbers significantly - around 800 points. Sometimes that is even more than people get for new submissions.

Guys: Ray is doomed to failure. Not only is this The Nemesis of Ray talking, but, the scoring is like Final Fantasy games. One can only power up to 99,999. ;p
