The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I think I'll just play another game. Looks like Staffa isn't interested to race to 100k.

And a warm welcome to our newest Fellowship member, ricbayer! :CONGRAT:

His contributions and those of our existing members have helped the Fellowship over 800k. We are now a mere 23k behind GROSS. That's a huge improvement from the 100k gap that we found ourselves just a day+ ago. :HOT:

Oh yes, Barry. Apologies on not sending anything on our website to you over the weekend. I was too busy gaming.

Would definitely send something over to you as soon as I can.

#649 by Citizen Gengsta - 7/27/2003 4:49:37 PM According to my estimation, submitting the game tomorrow should increase his numbers significantly - around 800 points. Sometimes that is even more than people get for new submissions.

I am almost certain that resubmitting does not change the date.

IceMole,

Let me try submitting and revert to you so that our knowledge in this area is complete.

Your work in this area is really useful.

Hey, maybe someone should write a simple program to allow us to see our new total score by throwing in a game. Or the game score needed to reach a certain total score. Wonder if anyone would do this.

Good idea, Ray. My assertion only comes from calculating Code Monkey's score (i believe he mentioned that he had resubmitted quite a few games) without trouble.

I'm not sure a program would work too well for this. A console app would be easy to write, but hard to use. A windows app would be really great to use but rather hard to put together I think.

I've just started to use a speadsheet and it seems to work well. Mine is a bit messy, but perhaps if someone made a nice one with careful instructions?

An excel spreadsheet should work very well. Use several summations and it should work really well. Just a big long list of scores and dates. Although you will have to create the groupings by hand.

True dat yo. Check out my former Anomalous score from July 6th that I resubmitted a couple of days ago. The date didn't move, nor the 'block' for scoring purposes.

You are going to have to rock out another game, Ray.

Ray,

As per Metaverse Scoring 3106 MWF 9:15am Williams Hall 216...

Ray's Metaverse Score after 48 games:

Block 3 - 85% - 4/3 to 4/26 - 9 games - 2261
Block 2 - 90% - 4/27 to 5/27 - 11 games - 6305
Block 1 - 95% - 5/28 to 6/26 - 12 games - 30542
Block 0 - 100% - 6/27 to 7/27 - 16 games - 60862
Total 99970

For your 48th game to push you over 100k in the Metaverse rankings dated on the 27th of July, it needs to be at least 19828. For your 48th game to push you over 100k in the Metaverse rankings dated on the 28th of July, it needs to be at least 12654. I suggest adding on a few hundred points to be sure... or play another game.

And in conclusion... it's not my fault! Don't turn me into a cat!

Hey Zyrixion (Miles),

Great story. Really appreciate your efforts to write stories in our thread. Keep it up! :CONGRAT:

Finally finished my first game in 1.05. Higher scores. Played Tiny/Challenging and scored 5000+ hmm. Now it seems worthwhile playing Galactic, so will start a galactic size map.
Later,
Joe

It's J4!

Go for it Ray. Get that 100k. The jury is still out on the scoring process, but if you could finish a game before midnight CST, it would help to figure out how blocks are formed.

Spoke too soon, Ray - you better hurry, else Staffa will just steal it out under your nose. You'll need 8k if you play tomorrow, but for today it could be 14k or it could be 8k.
Hmm, from your the list of your scores, it looks like if you had just waited one more day, you would have had it.Resubmit the game tomorrow.

Why I'm shocked. A Fellowship member suggesting a total cheeseball tactic? Why everyone knows only the GENERIC G.R.O.S.S. empire would even suggest such a thing. (Gasp) By golly gosh what have we come to?

CONGRATS TO THE MIGHTY STAFFA!!!! FIRST TO BREAK 100K

Ray looks like I had it correct. He's always one step ahead of us....I'd say lets switch games so we could be first on its ladder but he's probably already there waiting on us 20 games in hand. :)

J4: It's quite impressive. The Fellowship is also much larger. I believe you were here long before my time. How are you doing.

Also I need some feedback. Anyone want to make an appearance in the WotW. I also need to get more Middle Earth races into the story or invent a couple new ships - special ones powered by dragons or something.

We could have the trolls do something. Maybe even the orcs. The eagles were definitely part of the LOTR, and what about goblins. Anyone know if theses creatures can be tamed?
See with trolls, you have that bit about being afraid of sunlight and that doesn't work too well.

With orcs, you have that whole hate the elves and humans thing. Especially the elves.

Goblins have no problems I know of, but they are usually chaotic in nature and can't be tamed.

Eagles and dragons are an idea, and I can make up a way for them to fly in space.

It goes without saying Ray that congrats are in order when you break 100k. I may not be around when you do. It's no less an achievement to do it second than first, or 50th for that matter.

Echo that Ray - as someone who is NEVER likely to do it, I'll be waiting with cheers too. :)

"Great story. Really appreciate your efforts to write stories in our thread. Keep it up!"

Hey Ray I left the empire because I felt I wasn't making many friends besides yourself and wasn't up to par skill-wise. I am really appreciative of the help you have given me, and if you think I should rejoin let me know. :)
You should most certainly rejoin, Miles.

It takes time to get to know people. You have shown yourself to be one who wants to be active in the Fellowship and I'm sure all of us appreciate that.

And who is saying anything about skill levels in the Fellowship? Only Staffa is inborn with the ability to beat Maso in his sleep. All the rest of us learn the hard way, from playing more and from people who are more experienced than us.

Rejoin us Miles, the Fellowship needs our battle song singing warrior monk-bard. :D
Reply #674 Top
Miles. As Emporer of G.R.O.S.S. you could make many friends over there. We also don't give a hoot what your par is skill wise.
Though I cannot speak for another, I don't think Ray does either. So you might also wish to consider rejoining the fellowship.

It's all where you feel most comfortable. But even if you remain a lone wolf in the metaverse, keep in touch.

J4/Joe,

Welcome back to our thread!! :D
I've certainly missed your participation and your GNNs.
Good to see you playing again.
