The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Come back to the Fellowship, Miles. :)

You and I spearheaded the assault against the MWC the first day you joined us. We've got the GROSS'ers in our sights again, we could use your Battle Songs and Fists Of Death for the coming fight. ;)

Pontius, I have considered your offer, and I do enjoy the occassional drink (j/k, I know you're not drunkards), and the offer is very very tempting given your current standings, but for the moment I have decided to rejoin the Fellowship because I feel most comfortable here and fit in well with my RPG background and such. Sorry if I seem to be creating melodrama about my role here. ;)

Thanks for your kind words H50 and Ray. :D

hehe, seeing "Naismith out" there suddenly gave me an urge to go reread all those Bujold books.

All of my posts recently have been directly related to Galciv, and the creative writing urges haven't really struck me since my first couple posts here. But I wanted to say to Miles, Ray, Gengsta, Mad Prophet, and everyone else that I do really enjoy seeing your writing and your stories here, in spite of my unfortunate lack of participation within those stories.

A deep melodious voice harkens from afar:

Cry for Death
Try for the final test
Soon it will be upon us
And cry we will
For the enticing bloodlust
of each and every kill...

Our warrior bard is back. :CONGRAT:

Small, Painful, Military = 13,000.

Small, Crippling, Military = 14,000.

Not much of a difference between the scoring on these two levels, is there? I guess that's fair. There wasn't much of a difference in the difficulty, either. I'm thinking I'll try a larger map next time.

Killa! That's not something his nemesis would say! And that's our boy Staffa on top - what are you thinking!! Ah...trying to lull him into a false sense of security, ayy......

No rush, Chris.

I'm already pushing my personal Galciv burnout threshold. Didn't realise that I've played 16(!) games during the last 31 days. That's a game every two days!

That useful piece of info was revealed to me by our mathematical trio of IceMole, Gengsta and Kit.

Yes, you've been working too hard lately. You deserve a break. I grant you a month's vacation from Galciv playing. Enjoy.

Well, even with the resurgence of Staffa the Incredible and the 17k that he just contributed to GROSS, we have closed the gap to 17k.

Good job people. :CONGRAT:

Everyone of you count and I thought I should emphasise them. And I don't just mean score-wise, your contributions in the forum are also valued.

I sure would love a break. I will take one once the Fellowship overtakes GROSS. Else I will plug away.

It would be great if someone can do a Metaverse Calculator program, IceMole.

Getting the games into month blocks is the most complicated and tedious part of it.

End of quote

Yeah, they were such exciting books and her use of vocabulary is excellent. I too plan to reread them someday. I'm currently reading a Star Wars series, but some day when I run out of new books to read... :D

I love Miles' internal dialogue--his thoughts are racing along at a million miles an hour and the goofiest ideas keep on coming out. He might be my favorite character in all of science fiction and fantasy.

Don't do it Ray. I took a month off and went from 63rd to 500+...yikes. Minimum score for top 10 back then was 20000...now, that wont even get you in top 25...yikes ;)

Well, with your playing you will make it back on top soon.

Later,

Joe

Our Ray is a driven man. He works hard and he plays hard. Damn. That is such a good line to start a story. No-one use it until I can think up something!

Truly, I don't now how ya do it Ray. The last couple of weeks I just couldn't face doing the colony rush again (and I'm talking small maps!). You know management principles: delegate! Don't go the major burn-out route and disappoint all of your fans and comrades. And dare I say, your team is a pretty good one: full of beans. They'll do you proud when you have a gaming break.

J4,

Noticed you played a game on 24 Jul using ver 1.04.
You can actually resubmit your game under current 1.05 version if you have a save. I think you deserve more than 4k for a Crippling Large.
J4, the Metaverse currently allows you to resubmit any version to the current 1.05 version.

However, after I've thought about it, I'm not too sure whether that's a good thing to do as earlier versions are supposed to be easier and thus deserve less score.

I'll leave it to your own decision, J4.

Hey Ray,

Thanks, but I just remembered that I deleted all the save files when I upgraded to 1.05...hmmm...bummer. I have enough space on the hd, should have made a backup.

Calling Miles Naismith.

Care to sing a battle song to go in the WotW? If you get it in by tonight, I'll place it in the current installment. If not, it will go in a later one. If you don't want to sing one, there will be nobody to rally the Fellowship. :(

I'm strapping for content to catch up with Grekkan's chapters. Any body willing to post a ballad or something please be my guest. LOTR had many songs and many more were cut to make the trilogy short enough.

A long song about CariElf, anyone? Just like the one about Tinuevielle - however you spell her name.

I have a busy schedule today, and I'm not good off the cuff. I haven't kept up with the WotW stories also, so I don't know if I could create anything appropriate in time for tonight, but I will read WotW to get a feel for it and maybe compose a song for later; I just need some time. We do have another bard, I have been told, so someone else may want to take up your quest instead. :notsure:
What type of song should it be in the event I am the one to write it, and should I just post it here for you to paste into the WotW thread? :D
Reply #700 Top
Yep, just post it here.

Conforming to the WotW story, it should be fantasy based, but inspire a crew of elves and humans in space-faring warship. :D

Don't worry about not writing anything tonight. It would be a stretch for me to finish the part requiring a battle song by tomorrow. I think I'll break off the story a bit before in this next installment.

There are quite a few concurrent events, so it is possible that I won't need it until a week from now.
