The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I regularly colonize under 15 planets. I just build (actually buy) SE and HI immediately and add a Entertainment Network. They start giving me :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: pretty quickly!

Looks like I lost the touch for even small masochistic maps. I've lost eight in a row. Managed to take out the strongest race each time and then hit the wall.

Hello all,

Man, I feel like I've been in a time warp for the last couple of weeks. It's nice to see that the Fellowship has grown and exploded in rankings...

"I'm sure I left my ship parked behind that asteroid..."

Hi all, I'm new to this alliance. My score isn't very high because I like to play really short games, but when I saw that I could help a vaguely good alliance seize metaversal dominance over a vaguely evil one at no cost to myself, I jumped at the chance.

I submitted this in the strategy section. I won a military victory by culture flipping before I got all the techs. I reloaded, made a full maxed star base for the Torians to prevent another flip. Then I got the techs. After that I flipped them. The score went from 12k and change to a little under 15k. This is about a 20% to 25% for getting all the techs. Does this sound about right to others? While I am having fun, I might as well max the score for the FOTR, right? LOL

LOL You've got a sense of humour.
There is no need to. Just read the most recent ones to have an idea of our discussions and then jump right in!

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what little alignment icon you have next to your name, but whether or not you were a positive force for the community. I like to think I am.

Do good through your actions and posts, not by playing the game. That's my advice to the members of the Fellowship.

That's absolutely right. Most of you probably didn't manage to see my post on this issue after the alignment smiley was implemented by SD. I specifically mention that I do not want us to be constrained to one game alignment (just because the White Council then was seen as a good empire).

Why restrict our enjoyment of the game and how would we be of help to others who play evil if we restrict ourselves completely to the good game alignment?

Yes, it sounds right Rick. Tech researching gives up a fair bit of points. Just be careful, score maxing can get real boring for some so don't overdo it if you start to feel bored.

Ray, if any of my posts have crossed the line into "trash talk" then I apologise. I don't enjoy reading immature posts or conflict.

Have fun, Theleb. You know your assignment. Give us a first rate review of all those TBS games that you are playing now.

Uhmm confession! I've been playing Rise of Nations (RON). Its a nice game, along the lines of the Age of... series, and more closely aligned to Empire Earth, which I just loved. It's got a few new twists but basically it's a RTS game ala Warcraft/C&C. Still, it's fairly fun but I think i'll tire of it quickly. Then back to GalCiv. I left this thread 3-4 days ago and now 5 pages have gone by :) And our score has increased alot. Way to go team! Love the story submissions. I dont' think i can do much to help that out but I can try. In the meantime if there is a strategy discussion i am there.

I guess this is a strategy topic. What do you all think of resources? For me they really change the strategy of the game, so that you spend alot of time searching and finding good resources, and denying them to your enemy. Most important I think are the military resources; they allow you to boost your military score and improve the kill ratio when you attack them. So grabbing these are just pivotal to my games. Other strategy games (RON) have resources but they are very tamed down and don't give much ability bonus. Here there is a huge effect of resources on your game. Just my $0.02 as always.

Agree that resources are very powerful, Gibbie. The strategic resources in Civ3 gives the ability to create units. Even though Galciv ones don't, the +68% for a max out resource SB is nothing to sniff at.

Unfortunately, the AI still does not know how to make use of them as well as the human. We humans vulture AI resources during war with ease and we buy them from the AI using valuable tech.

Personally, I like economy ones the most because they are useful both in war or peace.

Attack Plan #800:

Suddenly, without warning or expectation, to the surprise of all present, from out of nowhere, Kit dashes into the Fellowship Halls with his own bag.

“Die goody-two-shoes wizards! Die!”

A hail of water balloons assaults the bewildered sages. Only a few manage to avoid a very wet fate. Seconds later, with his ammunition depleted, Kit scans the room.

“Why aren’t you melting yet?!?!” He shakes his bag in the air.

Ray, who briefly teleported himself away from the melee, calmly explains the difference between the Fellowship and wicked witches of the compass.

“Nuts.”
