The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Yes, Sage does have a nice ring to it... Although some people who knows me (particularly wife & close friends) might disagree from time to time ;) .

But I do know much more than just my onions... :HOT:

Good morning, gang...gotta do some work today. Yesterday, I didn't get a thing done.

About resources: I think they change the game dramatically. I have an example...the Drengin got to a resource before me and it happened to be right in the middle of my empire. This sort of peeved me, as it was near a Drengin colony that also just happened to be in the middle of my empire.

So I declared war on them, destroyed the SB (it was an influence SB) and pummeled the system. I thought about extorting peace from them after that, but they seem to fear me sufficiently, so I think I'll play with them a bit... :HOT:

Same situation here: yesterday and today's work is to be done now... So less talk. Maybe this evening

I had the same thing with military resources: once I took out their two mega star bases, (with my fleet of constructor's awaiting, to claim the resources) their empire crumbled. I think I didn't lose one ship in the rest of the war. And I destroied all their ships, so they kind peacefully seated at the table and accepted paying some war reparations (some of my ships got scrached...

Attack Plan #800:
End of quote

Good plan, Kit. But keep your eyes on the staves. Those are the real nasty wizard weapons. Also look out for concealed wands hidden inside of robes. Running into one of those could ruin your day. Of course, proficient casters can be deadly without any devices aiding them at all, so knowing what all the runes and markings on a wizard's possessions and clothing mean could be the difference between successfully evading/capturing a novice mage or being turned into a newt by one of the masters.

So, when any of us non-casters find ourselves in conflict with one of the students of magic, be cautious. ;)

Anyone familiar with naval command structure??

Care to spout off the command hierarchy? Is there some ranking officer called the XO?
"XO" is short for Executive Officer, or the First Officer of the ship. The British sometimes use the phrase "Number One" instead. And so, apparently, do bald Frenchmen who speak with an English accent.

Congrats on your Top25 standing, Kit.

This WotW installment is a exposition of Fellowship technology, and maybe WotW technology.

Just submitted another game. It was tougher than usual because the Dregs really got a fantastic start and colonise the entire 1/3 of the map on the far side of me.

I'm rather certain now that the AI's aggression is a function of both military + economy rating. The "twlight of humanity" notice that popped out compared the Dreg's combined mil+econ rating with mine and I believe that's what the AIs use to determine whether or not to go to war. So if you econ rating is fantastic, you can ignore your military rating. That's how folks get by with no military ships.

It would be useful if espionage could be used to see the AIs' respective ratings. Otherwise the best proxy now is the Diplo screen. Anything better than Average (ie Strong, Strongest) should be a warning sign to you.

Congrats on breaking 100,000 points Ray! :CONGRAT: The first with a player score over 100k!

Sorry about the previous miscalculation. My excuse is that the method to chop up time blocks was unrefined at the time.

Congrats, Ray!! You're #1 again! :CONGRAT:

The Fellowship is really cranking them out now...

The new update to the expansion pack is out!!

This one should make some people very happy:
"1) It now lets you enable cheat keys which let you do some really crazy stuff in game (scores to the metaverse won't be counted when this option is enabled). For instance, you can clone ships, unhide the whole map, teleport ships, automatically have the game colonize all free planets equally so you can skip the colonization phase and move right into the main game, give yourself money, etc."

It will make testing mods easier I guess. I think you asked for something like this Hawaii?

Post from Frogboy on the new features:

Expanded Universe Beta 3 (1.09B): July 31, 2003

New Features
+ Updated Scoring System: Players who play at higher difficulty are rewarded with significantly more points than before since teh game is more difficult to win now.

+ CHEAT KEYS. On the Options screen on the left there is now a new option "enable cheat keys". When you do this, you can then use these cheat keys:

CTRL A adds hitpoints, move points, attack and defense points
CTRL B battleship
CTRL C clone selected ship
CTRL E decreases morality
CTRL G increases morality
CTRL H heals ship, restores move points
CTRL J make all human colonies complete their social and military
projects
CTRL L assign all the worlds and resources to major races
CTRL M money (adds $1000)
CTRL O add anomaly
CTRL P increase the class of the planets in the selected star system
CTRL S research current tech (if shift key is also held, all techs
except final frontier are researched)
CTRL T teleport
CTRL U clear FOW
CTRL V create random ship
CTRL Y create colony ship

Note: Don't try to submit a score to the metaverse once you enable cheat keys. It will report it as 0.

+ new debugging code for metaverse submission (needs latest sdnetlib.dll)
+ Sort by research production added to Planet List sort options

Fixes
- Change in philosphy event should work correctly.
- fixed senate election occuring after changed back to Imperial
- fixed date not refreshing with new turn (used to not refresh until clicking on something forced a refresh)
- fixed bug where minimap range lines were not refreshing if an alien ship was selected or no ship was selected
- fixed some typos
- fixed bug that was causing all mini-freighters (including alien ones) to be AutoPilot, thereby causing alien ships to be selected during the move autopilot ships phase of the end of the player turn.
- fixed bug where selected governor was reset every time governor screen was unhidden

A heads up about the update. This was just posted in another thread:

#13 by Veteran Geoffrey Montgomery - 7/31/2003 4:27:22 PM

don't install the update it's either missing a file or deletes a file that makes the game unplayable

(:(
But I am sure there will be a fix soon, there always is :)

This was the little trick that I had which I mentioned in the GROSS thread. But I thought later that it is rather lame so I didn't mention it. LOL

Thanks all for the congrats!

I've posted in it in the main forum but I'm overjoyed that Brad decided to tweak the Metaverse scoring to better reward those who play the higher difficulties.

That was the only change to the scoring that I was holding out hope for and Brad granted it.

I'm seriously considering upgrading to Drengin.net now.
