The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Oh yes,

Cirrhosis has volunteered to mantain a Fellowship chat area for all of us.

Would love the opportunity to chat with all of you. Unfortunately, I'm in a different time zone so don't get to catch you guys (and gal) most of the time.

Had a good chat with Gezz yesterday at 7am my time. :)

Any of you interested in Cirrhosis' proposal?

If based on deeds, you are ten feet tall.

You flatter me. :)

Sorry, H5O. I should know by now that it's never wise to poke a Hobbit who's holding a lit pipe.

Better be careful, lest your love of the Hobbit's weed dull your mind. ;)

Cotal, welcome to the Fellowship, milady! I think Ray answered all your questions, save one. It is not necessary to build an Anti-matter Power Plant in order to build AMMs. They share the same name but have no other relationship.

No nominations from any of you for the Altarian Star Awards?

Sorry, my brain's fried from working ridiculous hours at work. When's the deadline again?

I would drop in from time to time, it's hard to synchronize times, though.

Wow, we are back on top! We're not flashy, but we sure get the job done. Thanks to Cotal for gracing us with her presence and her points. :)

Incredible. I'm off to try and finish a game.

What does happen when the irresistible force (GROSS) meets the immovable object (FOTR)? Stay tuned...

The deadline for the ASA nominations is Sunday, 3 Aug, 2359 EST.

Is the deadline too short? Didn't want the whole process to be too draggy.

Hard to say, it might take a little bit longer than 5 days to get momentum going on the project. If you don't receive a minimum number (5?) of nominations, might you consider pushing it back a week?

We broke a million! Wow. Good work, folks.

Sorry I couldn't contribute... I'm burned out on GalCiv for a while. I think my score is even starting to decay. (:(

Ok, if I don't get a minimum of 12 nominations, I'll push back the deadline.

No worries, Michael. Go do/play something else and get back to playing you are up to it.

Do try to participate in the forum though.

Hey all, the upcoming schedule for me is rough. I'm currently unemployed, fresh out of college, looking for a job and trying to squeeze in free time where I can. Going on a 2 week vacation to a southern N.C. quiet beach town then onwards to my grandmother's place. No GalCiv along the way. :(
On the topic of maintaining the chat room on IRC, I fully understand the fact that everyone cannot coordinate with one sole time slot, so don't worry. I'll try to check with GreenReaper or the SD IRC network ops to see what the terms are for having a channel. I have a feeling that they do not accomodate for gamers, but I'm hoping for the better.
I would like to submit a game later today if at all possible, though I think I am going to play around with the new beta's toys. :D

The Jedi Republic has their own channel so I do think it is possible, Cirrhosis.

Enjoy your vacation. :)

If you are able to, do contribute to the GCX:Beta3 Commentary thread that I've started.

Wow, this thread has really moved since I last checked it.

Welcome to the Fellowship, Cotal. Always good to see another active poster join up :)

The changes to 1.09 look really nice. The "advanced start" option looks especially nice--colonization is getting kind of dull. Anyone know yet how big the scoring change is for the highest levels?

I'd love to chat with some of you folks but I am awake at odd and irregular hours. I'm sure I could catch a few of you guys though.

Too early to tell. EBZ just posted another of his Beginner Smalls for about the same points so lower levels are probably unaffected. I will play a Maso Tiny once I upgrade and revert.

I've just registered a channel for the empire. You can find it by entering| /join #Fellowship | while on either SDC or your mIRC version of choice. Ray, if you will get online right now I will grant you a 499 level. Though, we can just skip all this and I will be the Sole Emperor and Dictator of the Fellowship IRC to save you all the trouble.

Well, congrats go to the hard working Fellowship as well! After about 24 hours, I find that the Metaverse has changed radically before our eyes. Amazing.

Ray, I definitely have some people in mind for the Altarian Star awards, but I got to do some digging to make a formal nomination. There are at least a handful of writers on the forum that are worthy of mention. Researching through their stories and then picking one will be a challenge.

You can get Ops - basically enabling you to do all sorts of nasty things to "problem people", mostly kick/ban-related things. They're nasty if you're on the receiving end in my opinion, but they're more of the sort of things that G.R.O.S.S. would indulge in. ;)
Alternatively, if you wanted, you could give everyone ops in a channel, but they could not kick/ban you as you would have a higher level than them. You could change the topic of the channel at will, raise the access levels of other people, etc.
I really don't think that we will need to use the vast majority of available commands. But they are really handy sometimes.

Ok. I can't access IRC now at work. Both of us can be channel admins.

If you need me to get online, I would be available from 0700-1200 EST or 1900-2359 today. Weekend is fine for me as well.

What time is good for you?

H50 (or anyone else) I seek your wisdom.

I'd like to mod the frequency of some events occurring (I downloaded a couple events from the library and now they're happening way way too often for my taste). However every event seems to have a "probability" of 100. Is this proportional to the frequency of the event? Why are they all the same? And since I don't see these events in every game, what does "probability" actually mean? Thanks!
The Probability field in the text files is not implemented- it has no effect.

It's just the RNG at work, unfortunately.

~SDC~
Sure, Cirrhosis. I'll see you in chat this weekend.
So every event is equally likely to occur?

Does adding more events decrease the probability of any individual event occurring?
