The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Okay, everybody...the Jedi Republic's website was making me jealous, so I've changed ours.

Ah, the warrior Theoden hurls his gauntlet to the floor in challenge! The game's afoot!

Seriously, Theoden, on the whole, I like this site. Easy on the eyes, and it packs a lot of information in without being crowded. You may want to change the color for the hyperlink text, though, as it isn't very obvious next to the black text and on a green background.

Do you want me to update the link on the JR site?

Regarding popups, you mentioned that you're limited to popups because the page uses frames. Actually, it came through as a regular HTML page with no frames. Because of this, you may be able to change the setting to "embedded" ads if you log on to Angelfire and view the profile.

As a final content note, I see that you also added a disclaimer at the bottom of the page. Perhaps we're going to have to come up with a universal translator program or protocol droid for legalese...

By the way, I where's Cotal in the pic?!? (Hiding from Kit's water pistol?)

Btw, who is responsible for the European Alliance page? And they have a page!!!?

Ummm...I sorta missed this one too... Website? I didn't know they had a THREAD. Apolyton's site is apparently down - don't know how long this has been going on - and Canada doesn't seem to have one at all.

I don't know where the wizard pic came from - but be careful if it is from the movies; they can get amazingly anal about abusing their images....

Theoden, love our new site. :D

I'm changing our empire website link now.

Site looks good. Those Angelfire pop-up ads are driving me crazy, though.

I can probably host the site on my backup web server. Updating would consist of you e-mailing me the changed HTML and me dropping it into place.

I can't imagine we'd have so much traffic it'd compromise the business, but let me run it by my partner first, to keep him in the know.

What do you think?

Wow, did our thread grow or what?

We got up to a 1000 posts just shy of a month. That's more than 30 posts a day!

Ray,

Followed your lead and changed the link on the JR site to Theoden's new creation.

Theoden, Alex has a point here - cite your source and ensure that you're dealing with public-domain images. You might want to check out:

http://www.theonering.net/

They have a nice selection and a search feature, and they're fan-operated. Your expressed purpose is information and fun - NOT distribution - which is good; but I'd dig for the legalese just to be sure.

I think my disclaimer covers the legalese quite well.

I've just started up another Maso Gigantic.

I feel that Maso is slightly easier now with the tweak to make trading partners less likely to demand tribute. Those of you who are leery of playing at Maso previously should give it a shot if you are on the Xpack beta.

Amazingly, I'm still a distance from my Galciv burnout threshold. Didn't think I would last so long before my next pitstop. It's probably because I'm enjoying my Maso again. :D

Okay:

I took popups off, but I think it makes the pages look weird...which is what I was worried about.

Alex and Obi Wan: thanks for the catch. I didn't give credit to the movie's site. I adjusted the legalese to hopefully cover my butt. Most of the time, companies will let ya slide if you promise to take off any offending material.

I've fixed the links to make them a bit different from the rest of the text. I really didn't want to make a huge difference in contrast, as I think it would make the site look bad. I settled on Purple. If I need something a little brighter, just let me know.

Obi Wan: Thanks for updating the link! You'll notice on our site that the JR is referred to as allies. Hope we always remain that way!

To all: Yes, the strategy page comes up with a "Page not found" error. I'm a little busy here at work and just can't get to that right now. I also need everyone to submit some strategies!

Theoden,

Just like to say that all of us here in the Fellowship appreciate the time and effort that you have spent on the empire website.

Great job! :CONGRAT:

Thanks, Ray. I hope everyone enjoys the site.

H50, if you could host the site, that would solve the ad problem. I agree popups are horrible, and as you can see from the site now, the banner at the top is screwing up the formatting. Just let me know if you can host! I think the whole site only takes up .5MB or so, and I really doubt there would be high traffic!

Also included instructions to access our chat room.

Hey, does anybody know why Bradley@Maple left? He's currently showing as unaffiliated...

:notsure:

I'm going to keep him on the roster on the website for a while, just in case he decides to come back.

No idea, Theoden.

He posted a bug report after he left which I replied.

Hopefully, he will consider rejoining us.

Thanks for fixing my bio on the Fellowship page, Theoden.

I will be absent from the forums for a short period of time, due to life related difficulties (I crashed my Win 98 partition and need to fix it, and I have other things to do as well). See you again in the near future sometime. :)

Theoden:

Angelfire doesn't really give you too many options here. After looking at both versions of both of our sites, the embedded ads are probably less painful. I like the purple text, though. It contrasts well without smacking you over the head.

I also like the picture of Ray - goes well with the "storybook" look on the main page, banners, etc. Nice!

H5O:

If you're still interested in those ideas we talked about yesterday, drop me a line. I will probably not be around here that much this weekend as real life is intervening, but should be back in the Forums by the beginning of next week.

Theoden:

No problem with hosting the site at my work. Zip up and e-mail me the files, and I'll post the new URL here for all. If there are subdirectories needed, include a readme file so I don't get lost.

My e-mail is: [email protected]

I am interested, but my real life work schedule precludes from tackling this in the near future. I'll keep it in mind the next time I get bored and want to write a proggy for fun.

Yes, I'm one of those sick programmers that programs for fun as well. ;)

Sooo... you thought you could slip past me with your "experiments", eh Cotal?

Well I'm BACK on the front page! Catch me if you can, winged serpent! :D ;)

Kit . . . your onto me LOL

I'll just have to post the dozens of near win saved games I have up my sleeve . . . (I wish). Good to see you playing Maso . . . and winning! I'm still a ham and egg player (I have no illusions about that), but mabye one day . . . one day ;)

Interestingly enough, regarding my experiment. So far I've played each of the first four levels from cakewalk to normal difficulty. Attaining a similar score in each for acheiving much the same kind of win. Should be interesting what kind of scoring I might get on the next few level ( tough, challenging, painful and crippling . . . ). I've been very disiplined as far as doing the same in each game (i.e. approx same population, all tech all wonder all trade goods etc).

For all the Southeners, have a good weekend, and for those else where a great Friday!
