The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Cotal, your experiment is interesting. There isn't much of a difficulty bonus from what I can see for those levels.

How do you rate the difficulty between Calkwalk and Normal? Normal twice as hard?

Let's see how you score for the harder levels.

H5O, I sent the files to ya. Thanks again for hosting! Just let us know the address when you're done... :)

Hey Ray, you have your Altarian Star Award judges yet?

Speaking of which I should play another game to defend my top 25 rank.

The Journey- Part 7

Fellowship Space

“Wow what a guy” Bakka exclaimed as he expertly carried the 6 pack to the esky. Placing the 6 pack gently on the cooling coils Bakka frowned slightly as he let them go. “hmm they seam a little heavier than normal. Oh well beer is beer”

“Hey Computer, you still with me?” ask Bakka
A slightly miffed metallic voice whined through the tweeters. “And where would I go you vandal?”
“Head for Fellow ship space. We have a mission and a package to deliver”

The ship accelerated and in a showy barrel roll headed out of orbit. Soon Coruscant's sun was left behind as the ship climbed the warp scale.
“On the road again” sang Bakka as he examined the lightsaber.
Pointing the business end away from himself Bakka thumbed the activation controls. A hole appeared in the bulk head.
“Cool.” Exclaimed Bakka
Stepping to the middle of the room Bakka swung the lightsaber through the air. At the end of the arc the lightsaber slipped from Bakka’s wing tips to hit the deck with an angry sizzle.
“Bugger!”

10 minutes later Bakka wiped the sweat from his eyes as he stood up straight and looked around.
“Oh crap. Um computer! Any systems damaged?”
The room was a mess. The view screen had two scorch marks in it from failed back flip attempts. The pilots chair was a mess of smelly plastic after its interception of the lightsaber. One balk head had a child like scrawl of 'BAKKA' scorched into it. The door to the loo hung from the latches while the hinges smoked uselessly. A hole had also been burnt through the esky lid.
“Do you have anything other than vacuum between those pointy ears?” screamed the high pitched voice
“Hey it’s fun!” explained Bakka as he rushed over to the esky to check for mortal wounds.
Waving his wing to clear the caustic smoke away from the lid he gingerly opened it to examine the precious contents. The 6 cans proudly stood to attention in regal coolness. Bakka breathed again and grabbed the nearest one.
“Glad there is no real damage. Cheers mate” Bakka toasted the computer as he flipped the sealant ring in an expert motion.
Cracking the seal did not produce the expected hiss of equalising pressure.
“Eh?. What the..” a worried concern had entered Bakka’s voice.
Bakka examined the can closer. It was full but not of liquid.
“Well. Well what do we have here?”
“You tell me. You are the one eyeballing the can.” the computer reply sarcastically.
“You still bitching?” mumbled Bakka as he peeled back the outside of the can to expose the contents.
4 hypertainment modules rolled out onto the floor. Bakka picked one up and read the label.
“Wendy’s Wookie” read bakka as he reached for the next one, “Weekend Wookie Wildlife….. Wonder Wookie …. Wookie Wacker . Hey cool. You know what this is?”
“Give me insight of master of the world” the grumpy computer replied
“It’s Wookie porn. We are going to be rich!” explaimed Bakka as he did an mad Irish jig.
“Oh gee. That’s just nifty” replied the computer still sulking.
“Cheer up you electronic windbag and start making copies” Bakka ordered as he inserted the modules into the hypertainment system

Catching the dropped lightsaber by his feet bakka flipped it up into his wingtips and once again took the comic pose of a bat with no idea pretending to be menacing.
“Not again” grumbled the Computer
“Captain. Stop this. You will damage something or kill yourself” screeched the computer
“But I thought I was improving.”
“I calculate it will take you 50 years to stop being a danger to yourself at you current rate of progress” intoned the computer.
“Oh bugger!”
Again the lightsaber dropped from the bats wingtips to be caught by his left foot and flipped back to his wing tips.
“So, no hope for me with this thing then?”
“Will you allow me to demonstrate Captain?” the computer asked.
“You demonstrate? How?”

The lights dimmed as the hypertainment system powered up. A brief glimpse of a trembling shag pile rug was seen, to be replaced by an orc with a sword.
“Hey the other image looked more interesting. Hmmm I hope you are not watching them as you copy them modules?”
“Um no captain, not watching at all.”
“Liar!” pressed Bakka.
“See the current image captain?” the computer ignored the bats question.
“The orc? Yes.
“Well I hacked the D&D game and created this sword fighting principles training module.”
“Caaarw. You’re good. So what level am I at?
“This orc is a beginner. Ready? Fight.”
The orc swished the sword twice through the air and stepped towards the bat. Bakka sprang backwards and the lightsaber rattled to the abused floor. The orc stabbed at the bat but the bat was already under the sword rolling in mid air just off the floor towards the lightsaber. With a twitch of his wings Bakka landed upright with the lightsaber between his wing tips ready to face the orc. Moving towards the bat the orc swang at the bat, the hyper sword met lightsaber. The lightsaber stayed momentary still and then ended up flying across the room. The orc continued with an over head chop that would of split the bat in half had it been real.
“Beginner you say?” gasped Bakka in shock
“Yep. You are hopelessly clumsy when using the lightsaber.” You could hear the grin in the computers voice

Two weeks later Bakka was still standing in front of the beginner level orc. The co-pilots chair had also surrendered the might of Bakka’s clumsiness. Spots of damage on the floor had increased until it looked like it was part of the deco. The two combatants circled for a while. With an evil grin the orc stepped forward and gutted the bat once more.
“You controlling the damn thing again ‘aint you!” screamed Bakka checking his belly subconsciously.
“I actually believe you are getting worse Captain. You only survived 10 seconds that time”
“Smart arse computer. This lightsaber is too cool to give up on. I will not stop”
“If it doesn’t kill you first.”
The orc and bat continued to slash at each other.

“Captain” the computer interrupted the floor show, “approaching Fellowship space”
“Ok. Kill this. Slow down. Do a scan and let them know I’m here”
The hyper orc faded to a pinprick light and popped out of existence. Normal light returned and all panels about the ship lighted up and started with the normal whiz hiss pop of a working spaceship. The bat clipped the lightsaber to his belt and turned to the twice scorched viewscreen.
Behind the bat the hyper orc came back into existence and took a swing at the bat. The bat flipped a wing in mid step, dodged the quick sword slash to land a few feet to left. The bat turned back to the orc with a quick well practiced flick the lightsaber was ready to fight. In perfect stooges style he then tripped over the still melted pilots chair and another scorch mark was gouged into the floor.
The orc vanished out of view. “Well dodged captain.”
“Gee ta” groaned Bakka
“Scanning contact..”
Wham, Bakka hit the roof as the ship bucked and all systems and lights when blank.
Crunch, the floor greeted Bakka with enthusiasm
“Owwww” groan Bakka. “Why me?. Computer?”
“Quantam weather front passed. All systems recovering. We are in Fellowship space.”
“Quantam weather.. What in Drengin hair skin is that? And where is the ‘Mind the step sign?’ ”
“Hailing signal coming in Captain.” The computer ignored the swearing bat
“Onscreen. Geeze. Stop with the Trekkie references will you”
Onsceen a Wizard appeared.
“Welcome to Fellowship space. Please stop all motion and prepare to be boarded and what in Hobbit spit is trekkie?”
“Oops sorry Mate. Was talking to my computer”
On screen the wizard raise one hairy eye brow in a questioning look.
“I only detect one life signature. Prepare to be boarded”
The screen went blank
“Well that went well” the bat breathed. “Now what?”

Theoden!

This is going to sound really weird, but I couldn't get those pages to work. Now, hosting websites is not something I normally do, so it could be something I'm doing.

The pages have a bunch of markup for Microsoft Word in them. I'm guessing you wrote the HTML with Word as the editor. Is there a step you might have missed, to save them down as normal HTML, perhaps?

When I dropped the pages onto the webserver and accessed it remotely, I didn't get the page, rather it kicked down the markup tags. Very weird.

I might have to recreate the pages on my side using FrontPage. That's fine but before I do that could you check and make sure I got the right pages?

Thanks!

~SDC~

Great job on the story, Bakka. Though we all know where the bat will end up, no?

I've decided to leave the Fellowship, and be a lone wolf in the Metaverse. My stay on planet Tolkien was nice and I appreciate all who helped me out. I may check the thread from time to time, but I doubt I'll post anymore. Thanks for accepting me into your empire, however temporary that was. :)

Goodbye everyone. :D

Strands of vine shot up around CariElf, restraining her movement.

“Stop the gate from forming!” Theleb shouted as the words of the Entangle spell left his mouth.

“Cover me! I’ll take out the mage.” Miles sprinted towards the circle of Death Knights.

The Jedis responded immediately. Yoda and Qui-Gon engaged Cythknight while Obi-Wan and bakka attacked Conwraith.

Plepart and Michael laid down a covering hail of arrows.

A pair of lightning bolts flew over Miles towards targets before him, courtesy of Gibbie and Arcrest.

Cotal, Idleprocess and Darth cast Bless, Haste and Mirror Image as Miles rapidly approached the preoccupied skeletal mage.

Miles somersaulted over the bodies of the Death Knights burned to a crisp by the lightning bolts.

The Quivering Palms landed full on the body of Vinashko. The mage’s body of bone was blown apart on impact. A despairing echo flew above the valley as the mage’s undead spirit left its mortal shell.

Miles rolled on the ground and recovered quickly. Knowing that he is in the midst of danger, he started to run back towards safety.

Loud diabolical laughter rang out from the portal.

“Did you think it would be so easy, mortal? You may have thwarted us this time but you will pay with your life.”

Paguma’s palm extended out from the Gate.

Miles found himself lifted up from the ground and his body flew towards the gate.

The rift closed fully as he disappeared within it.

“Miles!” Cotal shouted as the warrior monk disappeared into the void that was the gate.

“He is gone, Cotal. He will be sorely missed.” Arcrest said grimly.

“Let’s move quickly. We need to clear the rest of the Undead from this valley.”

As they moved to join the Jedis in battle with the two remaining Undead Captains, they could see CariElf breaking through the magical vines that had held her.

Calling on her god, CariElf prayed for a flaming pillar to smite Theleb from the heavens. Puzzlement crossed her face as she realised that her prayer went unanswered.

Theleb seized upon this moment of her confusion to cast one of his most powerful druidical spells. Gathering the forces of nature around him, he called out for vicious and powerful beasts from the woodlands to aid him in battle.

To his astonishment, a koala, wombat, penguin and bear sallied forth from a nearby crop of trees, heading straight for CariElf. The animals surrounded CariElf, lashing out periodically at her with their paws and flippers. Trapped within the encirclement, CariElf found herself unable to hit out against this cute assortment of cuddly creatures.

A loud clap echoed through the valley as shimmering figures materalised in the valley floor.

Ray the Wanderer uttered a single word of power, knocking both Conwraith and Cythknight senseless.

Vincible, Gengsta and Philopoemen focused their magicks on the rest of the Death Knights. The noises of battle fled from the valley as the last of the Death Knight fell.

“Now, what shall we do with CariElf?” Ray mused as he watched the curious spectacle before him.

Just posted my first game in a while. It was worth it, though.

H50, I did have a little trouble transferring the pages. Can you do a little FrontPage magic for me? The pages and all files are correct.

Miles, you'll be missed! Good luck in your solo travels.

Hope everybody's having a great weekend! We're having a monsoon here, so I'm logging off before God decides to for me! :D

The Death Knight looked down at the body of Theoden, the snarl on his face frozen in time.

A blade of a massive sword stuck out from his back, the hilt buried to his chest. Heaving the carcass of the Death Knight off him with his leg, Theoden sat up, exhausted.

“H50!”

Theoden had seen the blow land on H50 and was certain that the halfling is dead. Getting swiftly to his feet, Theoden raced over to the fallen halfling.

H50 sat motionless with his back to the valley wall.

Cradling the halfling in his arms, he felt a strange material under the halfing’s tunic.

The sparkle of light mithril mail shone through as he pulled the tunic down. The words DIPLOMAT were enblazoned in golden characters on the upper left.

“You didn’t think I would die so easily, Theoden?” H5O cracked a smile, pushing himself away from Theoden’s embrace.

“The temple of Starkcod bestowed this upon me for my contributions to the Temple over the years. I believed the Goddess herself must have foreseen my dire need for such a protection against one of her very own clerics.”

Theoden extended his arm with a smile and lifted the halfling to his feet.

“You really got us worried, H50. Come, let’s go join the rest.”

Eh. Real life calls me once again, and I'll be out of town and away from the internet until next Friday at the absolute earliest. (Though it could be as long as Aug. 21 or so...)

So, Ray, if I was still under consideration for judging the ASA, I must withdraw.

Similarly, I'm not going to be able to get up a GOTM anytime soon, nor the scores from last month. :( My apologies to all the participants.

Good luck all. Be back in a while--hopefully the forums won't be completely dead by then. :(
Reply #1041 Top
Have a good trip, Michael, and see you back here soon. :)

Nah, don't think the forums are going to die anytime soon. The regulars are still alive and kicking.
Some regulars kick, but others sneak! I just had to say that. It has been a while since I visited Fellowship Hall. I'll be sure to avoid any Death Knights that may still be riding around, as one can never know what will happen with those sneaky Canadians about.

Hey, Cotal just knocked Kit off his Top25 perch! :D

Wow, you are just one Maso Large game short of completing your experiment.

And congrats on your Top25 medal!

Well my experiment is almost complete. Played through nearly the whole spectrum of difficulties to try and figure out the scoring bonuses??? Interestingly the only level in which I missed trade goods etc was on 'Crippling' (missed Guide Book, Tri-steel and Behaviour Modifiers and two wonders Galactic Exhibition and . . . I can't recall the other, historic somthing or rather :notsure: ).

In all theses endevours I generally exercized superior diplomacy and held the strongest economy through-out the game to save spending money on any millitary until the end.

:SURPRISED: . . . Not what you might expect?

I find crippling quite hard to play (to say the least) and will be suprized if I can add a 'maso' game to this list (I get hammer on masocistic (?sp)). From what I can see there seems no obvious incentive for me personaly (bases on the games presented) to play the higher levels of difficulty for a 'higher' score considering the extra time it takes . . . it's a puzzelment ;p

Edit - Buy bye Miles, Rouges have all the fun! ;) .
Michael, all the best! Heya I just saw LOTR 2 (The Two Towers) for the first time . . . yesterday, I liked the Tree Ents although they where kinda portayed a bit . . . um, dumber than I imaginged them.

Has anyone here ever played 'Nethack'? I'm kinda stuck . . . :p

Yes, the difficulty bonuses are hardly detectable based on your experiment. And difficulty is supposed to the largest component in score.

This could be related to the apparent problem Frogboy is having trying to increase the difficulty scores in Beta3. The entire difficulty score computation could be wonky.

One of these days I might play a Calkwalk Gigantic and see if I can achieve 20k+ on that level.

First I got to complete my current game. I made a mistake in starting a Maso/Gigantic/Abundant. It's rather overwhelming.

Joy :notsure: (Just Kidding) ;)

Thanks your your praise all, having fun is easy! I must return to the Laboratory. Launching now into attempt number four(-ty two) on Maso . . . good grief! :p

Kit you'll no doubt pass me again soon . . . so I must enjoy this rare moment while it lasts and say . . .

"Na na Na na Na Na (rasberry)!" :d . . . it all in good fun . . hehe.

A 'Calkwalk' submission by Ray! . . . that (if nothing else) would be the local highlight of the year! I'm pretty sure they built a fair bit of humor into playing on that level to releave the bordem (Ships noticably run away, AI says silly things, and the Minors ruling the roost) . . .

So any Nethackers ere? I got the Amulet and am on the 2nd elemental plane (Air I think) and am floating around helplessly in space getting attacked by Dragons and worse! Help . . . Agggrrr!

Well, I played it. Calkwalk Gigantic as best as I could.

Military victory 2201. All techs and everything (except evil). 2 1/2 hrs of effort.

The score is about 4k less than my crippling game and about 10k less than my maso game.

IMO, the perfect Calkwalk game should score no more than 1000 points and here I was scoring 15 times that to play a game where I spent half the time hitting the enter key.

To illustrate the difficulty involved, I had 60 colonies when I stopped colonising. I could have colonised 80% of the universe if I wanted to. My Altarian neighbours had 3 colonies when I stopped.

At 2199, I landed my culture bomb colony ship on a PQ26 planet about 5 sectors away from the Dregs. When the game ended at 2201, there were still yellow stars within range of the AI.

Don't think I'll ever try this again to preserve my sanity.

Let's see. If a kid plays one of these 15k games everyday for 30 days, his total score would be 82,158!

That would be No 7 on the Metaverse if everything remains unchanged a month from now. Probably still be in Top25 even if everyone continues playing. LOL
