The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Ah, I just get off the "what is anzac spirit" debate and see this...

I've got a crate full of chill pills here on the Retox. Everyone's welcome to have one on the house :-)

[edit: if people are gonna argue over posts from ages ago, I think it'd help to find the originals so people can see exactly what they're talking about. If everyone works from memory, this isn't going to be pretty...]

Ahhh Quack. It's senseless. He's not gonna change. I'm wasting my fingers. Is that chill pie with Strawberries? I think I'll have a piece.

Oooooo-kay...

BlueSteel: Nothing about you or ANZAC here in the past 50 posts. Paranoid? ;)

Pontius: If you've got a problem with Ray expressing his opinion on scoring, or anything else for that matter, that's your business. I'm just asking you to tone down the name calling and inciting. Even if you think Ray is a "whiner and crybaby" or that he makes suggestions that are "totally lame", please either keep them to yourself or try to put it a different way. I try not to flame anybody on this board, and I would like to see others be as respectful.

We've had some fun having conversations, Pontius. I don't want to get anybody mad, so please take what I'm telling you as helpful. It's better for all of us if we stay away from the flames.

Quack: I need some of those chill pills for my boss here in RL. :D

Now, back to our regularly scheduled (and fun) conversations. The preceding "Reality TV" segment was a signal beamed to us from the Yor and should be considered an act of war.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Hey, what are some creative things to do to the Yor? I despise them with a passion that is neverending, and am always looking for new and fun ways to dismantle them or convert them to humiliating objects.

Don't worry, Bluesteel, it's nothing to do with you.

Briefly, Ray and Pontius got into an argument about the Metaverse and the scoring system, and in the course of that argument Pontius made some comments about Ray that some people have said is "name-calling" and that Pontius calls "observation."

Personally I think Pontius is in the wrong here, but if you want to read it yourself the relevant posts are on page 44.

EGADS!!

Has anybody looked at Richard Heaton's score submissions?? He's almost the machine EBZ is, except he plays Large galaxies (and it looks like he's moving into Huge!)
:sniff!:

EEK!!

Just looked at Wombie's, too!! Holy crap, how do you guys do anything but play GC??!!

The five red pirates of Doom are in a tight bunch near the top. Only one lone Fellowship member is in range to break up the unholy alliance. (Look at their alignments. No good!) And only the Ring keeps them from the top. :)

Theoden - I'm on annual leave at the moment, so the output wont last! I have taken Ray's original statement: "the Metaverse is about commitment, not skill" to heart. The 'crankin' style allows those less talented to support their team by just sweating out results. Richard is excellent, though - I just had to try and pip him, even though it's only for a short time!

As I said earlier, I regret entering into the discussion with Pontius which I hoped he would be interested to discuss reasonably and logically.

However, he has once again decided to indulge in immature name-calling behaviour having not been able to back up his arguments and statements.

So I've stopped reading his posts already. As he himself put it succinctly in the GROSS thread, children are dying outside. We are all here to have fun and not to behave in immature behaviour best suited for a school playground.

You are the expert on the Metaverse computations, IceMole. But I could have sworn I've seen some scores get reduced even though that person did not submit a game.
End of quote

Well, I can't think of any likely reasons for this to be happening given what I've observed in the metaverse. Of course it is quite possible there more calculation rules I have not come across yet. I'd be interested to look into it if you see any more scores exhibiting this behavior.
I'm wondering IceMole. If a person stops submitting and leaves the game, shouldn't his scores degrade somehow rather than maintain at that level?

Or do we wait for the massive metaverse-wide recalc?

>>> Cotal runs through the Galactic Civilizations Forum kitchen ducking and weaving to avoid the co-lateral damage from the plates, spoons and spatulas flying every which way . . . ;p

Anyway (if you'd pardon the expression . . . hehe). I accidently on purpose submitted my first loss for ages! The score was over 1000 so I couldn't resist. Suprisingly my Metaverse score went up about 2500? Since I still had plenty of time to spare I submitted another more conventional game (a win) for which I got about 20 Metaverse points (I exaggerate a little hehe) . . . LOL

Anyway my point is this, should losses mabye score a little higher. I mean these days the most exciting games I have are close losses. It seems a shame that they generally score about 2 to 5% of that you might expect for a win (my second last game being an unusual exception). This is a point of discussion and happy debate not a real request, you know a hypothetical kinda banter . . .

Last time I raised this topic I recall someone said . . . 'A LOSS IS A LOSS A WIN IS A WIN' and winner takes all! I had to smile at that . . .

Oh and AHH is anyone running Windows 2000 pro? I didn't know there was a new security service pack out . . . really worth a look if you have this OS, theres some really nasty stuff out there at the moment (virus wise) . . . Makes Nortons and the like about as effective as toothpick bracing the Dutch Channel dam in an ecological crisis . . .

What is the word for this? Oxymoron? LOL

BTW, I believe Oxymoron means "A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist."

Don't want anyone to think I'm insulting Cotal. :D

How many 25k games does it take for me to reach 200k?

I have no problem with that. And for you to characterize this as that is totally wrong.

Just 3 rules for getting along with me: 1. Don't be a hypocrite. 2. Don't tell me something that I know and you know isn't true just for the sake of saving face or arguing.
3. Don't be arrogant.

Sorry but I cannot respect those things. And I don't think it's "disrespectful" as you put it, to call someone out on it.

Of course, if it won't do any good and I've just given up on someone's character, I just won't associate with them any more. I'm to that point in this case. No need for me to bother anymore.

That's not to say that you and I can't Jaw sometimes theoden. I Have no problem with that. There is no guilt by association in my book. :)

Good point. I don't buy the argument a win is a win and a loss is a loss. If that were true wins should score a set value and losses would score zero. And the metaverse would be boring as heck. This would be particularly true if the puter gets tech win comes out. for example, when that change occurs, A loss where you barely got beat to final fontier just before you smacked the last puter planet probably should score fairly close to say a win where you hid in the corner and barely beat the puter to final frontier I would think. But I dream....

I really don't have that strong an opinion either way. I can see the merits of both sides.
I guess it just depends on your POV about the Metaverse. I don't look at it as a winnings tracker, but a scoring tracker. And losing games have a score too......
OMG, that sounded like a gooey goody/fuzzy bunny statement. Where is that vomit smiley when you want it. LOL

Here borrow mine 'a white pale face always looks sickly to me'

>>> Cotal enters the kitchen carring a six hundered and fifty pound side of frozen beef! Screaming hysterically 'Who the heck wants some!' <<<

OK . . . I've just gotta buy in on this just this once.

What's wrong with being a Hypocrite? (Appart from the fact that people ignore your advice and tend to treat you like a pariah) People say to me . . . 'Cotal!' they say . . . Being called a Hypocrite is worse than anything (even an oxymoron)! :D

As I understand it, it's a case of 'Do as I say not as I do . . . for I am a hypocrite and am proud of it!' I mean, what can one possibly say to some one who openly says that!

Arrogance is a borish trait I'll agree. But then again whats wrong with being Arrogant? (Appart from the fact that people ignore your advice and tend to treat you like a pariah) People say to me . . . 'Cotal!' they say . . . Being called Arrogant is worse than anything (even an oxymoron)! :D

As I understand it, it's a case of 'I couldn't give a rats 'toilet area' about anyone elses opinion but my own' I mean, what can one possibly say to some one who openly says that!

L:iars ;p, in all fairness simply suck the big one! But if someone openly says 'I am a liar and I like to suck the big one!' What can you possibly do in response to that? Unless ofcourse if their of the opposite gender . . .

So to sum up . . 'terpentine' ain't no thing to be using on plastics! Epecially if they are polymerized!

If anyone over 10 yrs of age took this seriously, I really can't help you! Enjoy the serenity of stupidity it is no less a curse than a troubled intellect. ;)

People, just ignore/skip Pontius' posts like I do.

He baiting me to go down to his level and he is not going to succeed. I'll rather walk away every time than engage in this meaningless talk.

Cotal, your post is cute. :D

Kit, if you are going to take up the challenge of computing my targets for 200k, assume that I submit a 25k game every 3 days from my last submission.

I know I'm a sucker for punishment. :D

I'm not sure what you mean here, Ray. If you mean is this how the system seems to work, then no. I've seen players whose scores have not been degraded since the big recalculation in early May.

If you mean should Stardock be using a more active method to degrade scores, it depends on what they want to achieve with score degradation.

One possibility is that the primary reason for score degradation is to slow the growth of us old timers who have the advantage of many blocks, rather than to punish inactivity. It seems that this fits well with Stardock's apparant philosophy for in-game scoring (i.e. you never lose points, you only see diminishing returns as time goes on).

Another possibility is that running constant recalculations may be too resource-intensive for Stardock to want to do it regularly. If I remember correctly, the last metaverse-wide recalc took quite a while to complete, so it may be a more difficult task than we realize.

I don't really see a problem with leaving players' scores alone when they are gone. It would seem a shame to see top scorers such as yourself and Staffa reduced to a fraction of their former glory. Besides, I wouldn't want my own score to drop into the range of 1 submission players. That could look pretty embarrassing. :p :notsure:
Before Staffa and I took over the "Most Rank Dog" spot, I could remember two others who were there for some time. They were Norin from Imperia Galactica and Andrew Chai an independent. Both have stopped playing for quite a while.

Andrew is now at rank 1237 with 2733 score and Norin is now at rank 740 with 8155 score.

Can you do a check on their scores to see if they have degraded or have they just remained at the score where they stopped playing? That's possible to tell, right?
