The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Thanks IceMole!

I've looked through your spreadsheet and I think it is a godsend! I've wasted time trying to calculate this the hard way and with far less accuracy.

It's intuitive and simple to use. No one should have any problems keying in the dates and scores and the computation date. The spreadsheet does all the complicated month blocking and degrading for you.

You should share this with everyone!

I hope to. However, I don't have any webspace. Do you suppose this is the sort of thing for the library? Or will I need to find somewhere/someone to host it?

Cooking with Bachelor Kit

Today... tonight... whatever the heck time it is, I have wanton for soup (the gift of a friend from Beijing) and spicy seaweed strips.

I boil some water while posting my stupidity on the GalCiv forum. Once ready, I dump about a dozen wanton in... hmmm... only about eight left... better dump ‘em all in.

I then return to my puter to change my IRC nick to ‘KitCooking’. Back at the boiling pot of wanton, I notice the bottom ones are sticking to the bottom of the pot. It’s freaking teflon! No problem. There’s an easy bachelor solution - complain on the GalCiv forum.

The wanton are translucent so I test one for readiness... mmm! :d Hao chi! (translation: Good eatin’!) Carefully dump them into a large bowl (learned that lesson about ‘carefully’ several weeks ago) and grab the bag of spicy seaweed strips.

Now here’s the problem:

1) I want to mix the seaweed in with the wanton, but the bowl is already full.

2) I don’t want to grab another bowl because that would be an extra bowl to clean later (translation: sit in my sink for a week).

3) I’ve never tried wanton with spicy seaweed. If I put any in the bowl and it’s no good, the whole bowl is ruined.

Solution:

1) Mix the seaweed and the contents of it’s spice packets (two spices!) in a mug (easier to ignore in the sink after eating).

2) Put aside my stupidity for a moment and stick a wonton in my mouth followed by some spicy seaweed... mmm! :d Hao chi!

3) Put more and more spicy seaweed in the bowl as I eat.

Well that’s about it for... whatever time! Now I can return to posting my stupidity on the GalCiv forum. Bon apetite! :D

Now that you mention library, I found a Combat Statistics Excel Sheet by pdifolco in the library.

So try submitting it to the library. It would be great if they host it there.

Get him back here, Wombat. I would love a re-match with the great Staffa. :)

I'd be supportive - unless it's via paypal - I refuse to use them since they "stiffed" a friend of mine.

Hey IceMole, would you be able to figure out how many games it would take me to reach 200k?

About needing space to post your stuff drop me a line [email protected]. I can release it on Friday along with my GCCG on my site.

Yes, it was a great discussion! I'm impressed with the work everyone is doing in researching the recalc.

Trying to weed through the other threads, as well. It's been a "busy" morning (though my boss would probably disagree! ;) )

Pontius: Yes, hope we can still talk. I don't think anybody here really wants all of us to stop having fun. That would kind of kill the whole empire thing, wouldn't it?

IceMole: I see a promotion to Veteran for a project like a score calculator!! Please submit it to the Library!

Ahh...the see-saw continues! It seems it's whoever can post their games the fastest! (or recruit the most!) LOL

I just submitted a large, abundant, tight, painful game played as pure good and got a little under 15k. I played this as pure evil a little while back and bascially got the same score so maybe my drooling over trade centers is six of one - a half dozen of the other.

The nice thing about this map is that it is big enough to get all the techs without letting up on the gas or gifting the opponent with a 343% culture base just to prolong the game. The abundant gives lots of planet events to go evil or good (although I really wish there was an option to increase planet events other than colonizing a low PQ planet, getting the event, and destorying the colony). The tight cluster reduces culture bombing a bit so you don't accidently flip opponents culture too early or get flipped yourself. Then mix in the level of difficulty you like but painful works for me. The result is a fun game with little cheese and a decent metaverse score. Since it was large and not huge or gigantic the little strategy map in the upper right hand corner is much easier to read and my computer doesn't chug like it did on gigantic - I could have gotten a snack between turns near the end of my gigantic game. I think I might play large for a while for maximum fun.

Also congrats to FOTR for being in first place at least for the moment. We are seeing more rings pop up in the top 25 so keep submitting games and good luck. :)

Rick,

Good job!

I find Large to be an okay map, but I still like Huge for not having to worry about a culture victory. I agree you can't see enough in Huge or Gigantic in the mini-map, but I usually zoom when I need to see up close.

Also, the Huge maps have enough 13-14 PQ planets so that you don't have to cheese too much. I just colonise everything in sight and hope I get the events to bump me to Pure Good. With 5% PQ ability pick, plus Soil Enhance and Hab Improv, I can usually make some good new colonies, along with bumping my alignment up.

Congrats on your Top25 medal, Rick!

H50 was bumped off but he and FriendJosh are just waiting in the wings.

Thanks Ray.

H50, how did that anomalous game happen? That really makes me afraid to use mods. I finally had to put in the library mod that decreases the volume of the Drengin music LOL. But, I was thinking of trying the Environmentalists on an abundant map except was afraid of an anomalous score.

Josh and H50 will move up soon and it would be nice to see more ring logos on the top 25 board. Although most of us can't play like Ray or Staffa, we can be persistent LOL. I think I am going to take the evening off and go watch some NFL pre-season. Later . . . :)
