The intent of these Awards is to reward the efforts of our writers who have added so much color and life to the Meta-universe that we have here in the Forum.

The Awards would be given out every 4 months. The period of the inaugural Awards would be from 1 Apr 2003 to 31 Jul 2003.

A total of three Awards would be given out:

The Altarian Gold Star
The Altarian Silver Star and
The Altarian Bronze Star

This thread would contain the Award rules and regulations. I will open another thread named The Altarian Star Awards Nominations which would allow each of you to nominate up to a maximum of 3 stories that you believe is deserving of an Award.

The deadline for nominations would be 3 Aug, Sunday 2359 EST.

Once nominations are closed, a committee of neutrals will shortlist the most deserving nominations for the final vote. Each Metaverse registered Galciver then will have one vote that they may cast in a closed ballot. The 3 nominees with the highest number of votes will be honored with the Awards.

The nominations should be in the following format.

Author
Excerpt of the work that you are nominating (in quotes)
Short commentary on its context / Reason for your nomination

Note that you are nominating for the best stories, not the best authors so it is possible for an author to receive multiple nominations for different stories written.

That’s all the rules and regulations that I could think of now. I may add others if the need arises.

Ok ok, no spitballs this time. If y'all would allow me to indulge in bullet items... :)

- I believe Ray's idea of giving recognition to some of the people who have enriched the forums is an excellent idea.

- Setting this as a competition for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place could be discouraging people from “just throwing stuff into the mix” - these contributions are greatly needed.

- So should there be a compromise? I like Solitair’s suggestion of having a sample of three voted on contributions. No 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, but there’s still some selection process. It also let's the community know that we like reading stuff beyond gaming strategies and bugs.

I suggest we leave the voting open for a week or two, but only report IF there seems to be sufficient support / voting. Anyone who does not want to be nominated has that right (well legally they don't, but we'll respect that right :-)), and I'll ignore any votes for their work.

I'm very surprised that so many people seem to be so competitive. Yes the metaverse is all about competition, but it's also about community. Like many people here I've read pieces of prose which make me smile and which add to the community. I like the idea of recognising these. I light the idea of hightlighting these as many of them are buried deep within empire forums. Not all pieces can be recognised. Hence we nominate the ones which most affected us. Not all pieces appeal to all people. Hence we vote to raise the most broadly appealing to hall of fame status.

Perhaps Ray can consider less competitive ways of recognising work. One idea would be a website which listed contributors to the forum, with links to many examples of their work. People could then browse at will.

Guys, I've cancelled this event already due to the sensitivity of some of our writers with regards to a competition that was meant for fun.

I like Paul's idea of just listing the stories on a site. Maybe we should see if the folks in the Fellowship would be willing to do this as a project and extract stories and showcase them on our site.
