OT: PBEM Role Playing

OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

Hehe . . yes please,

As I understand it, each charecter has attributes like Wisdom, Strength and hitpoints. This is going to be great!

Quick message (at work, but I'll talk a bit more when I get home).

Good that we have some enthusiasts. You'll be starting as 1st level characters.

For those who have not role-played before, it's a kind of improvisational theatre for the benefit of the participants not an audience. You take on the role of your 'Character' who is defined by various statistics that determine how good he is at doing things, and are used to work out your chance of success at anything.

Could everyone who wants to play please send me an e-mail (preferably from the account you intend to use for the game). Then we can start talking in more detail about your character.

The rules will be D&D 3E - if you don't have any of the books do not fret (the 'Players Handbook' is probably the most useful if you do want to get something).

Mexal.

I'll probably be too busy with work to sign up - maybe next time. Oh, well, I can sit on the sidelines, wave a flag, and boo at the goblins/trolls/bad dudes you're fighting :)

TheQuack,
does that mean we can expect lots of 'look behind you' comments :)

Mexal,
email sent to you.

Okay, count me in. I'd like a mage but I'm willing to be flexible for the sake of party balance.

I played some 2nd edition but never 3rd.

Judging from the above statement, vincible, it seems that our classes may have to be determined by our stats.

Let's see who gets the higher intelligence. ;)

Ok, recruitment is closed as we've got our six players.

For others who were also keen, don't worry. I believe there would be opportunities down the road to join.

I'll play if there is any more room.

Well, multi-classing is different in 3E. You can only do it when you level up, so at 1st level you can't be a multi class. Though, that really works out much better, at leveling up is even across all classes and there are no race restrictions on multi-classing.

Wizards aren't quite so limited at first level. You basically get all the '0 level' spells at 1st level, which are the cantrips. I don't remember off the top of my head how many you get per day.

I'd be happy to help anyone who has a 2E concept convert it to 3E. (Mexel, we are playing 3E and not 3.5 right? I hope so, because I refuse to buy 3.5)

I have no real preference for what I'd want to play. Perhaps a cleric, since nobody's jumped in to say they want to be one of those.

It sounds like Mexal is more free-form than I am when I run pbems, and I'm not nearly as errr 'anal' as some people when it comes to the combat, etc. But basically, the GM just posts a scenario, then the players answer back in 'story format' what their actions and such are, then the GM posts back the results of those actions, etc. It's alot like the roleplaying you see going on in the galciv forum with the empire threads (thought not THAT freeform). If anybody is interested, you can take a look at one of the games I run at:

(Sorry if that doesn't work, I don't know how to do links on these forum boards--is it just regular HTML???)

If anyone else has any more questions, please feel free to ask.

I thought there would be have more than 6 players who are interested to play.

Yes, we certainly can start more than one group if there are enough GMs and players.

Alternatively, we could have replacements to the original six if someone "dies" or can't continue for whatever reason.

Mexal, how do we coordinate about team balance if we are to separately discuss character creation with you?

I mean we wouldn't want to end up with 6 fighters or 6 mages. :)

BTW, I've sent you my playing email.

This certainly sounds interesting but it looks like I'm too late... if you guys decide you could use a monk or druid down the line though, let me know :P

Hell, no. That'd spoil all the fun. If anything, I'd make things more fun. Maybe I'll pickpocket one of you, hide in the shadows, and watch as you argue about who did it and start fighting amongst yourselves.

Now that's entertainment! :D

I wasn't fast enough to respond, so I am probably too busy. But, I will be interested to keep tabs on the game as a spectator - sent my email with the request to watch.

Eeep. You lot sure sound eager.

I would be willing to have more than 6 characters if there are people feeling left out. This also makes it easier for people to play the class they want without worrying. I'm going to use a mailing list, anyone wishing to 'lurk' may do so. I'll let you all know when it's set up.

D&D 3e it is, I haven't seen 3.5 yet.

Start thinking about your character concepts. You begin on a boat heading out to a bunch of islands rumoured inhabited by some kind of 'pirate empire.' I want to know what sort of place you came from (then I'll match your desires to someplace in the campaign world) and why you are on the boat - the law's after you (or her father is!), you're a trader, a missionary, an explorer, got pressganged, whatever. If you would like to be on the track of a rumour, I'll come up with an appropriate one for you once I know a bit more about your background.

Details on character generation hopefully will be done over the weekend.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

I'd like to lurk. BTW, if you had the time to make it really interresting, having two groups working against one another either in competition or perhaps even as antagonists. A group of "good" explorers trying to finish the noble quest, a group of bad guys either trying to prevent it OR trying to finish an evil quest and to both paths intersect somehow. Oh well, maybe i'm just ranting.

Following from Mexal's last post, do indicate if there are more of you who wish to join or lurk for this adventure.

I'll join, if you'll have me; if not, I'll lurk :D
