OT: PBEM Role Playing

OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

BTW, if you had the time to make it really interresting, having two groups working against one another either in competition or perhaps even as antagonists. A group of "good" explorers trying to finish the noble quest, a group of bad guys either trying to prevent it OR trying to finish an evil quest and to both paths intersect somehow. Oh well, maybe i'm just ranting.

Do we get to vote each other off the group too? :D

Sorry, your scenario sounds like Survivor. Two groups, island and all you know. LOL

While I have actually written & run a scenario based on a 'reality TV' show... this is not it!

Pirate-fighting - or joining - is a possibiility :-)

If characters end up forming 2 groups that will be up to them. At least the PBEM format makes it easier to handle folks going off in different directions than sitting round the table...

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal.

Looked at the web regarding D&D 3E classes.

Barbarian: a ferocious warrior who uses fury and instinct to bring down foes
Bard:a performer whose music works magic-a wanderer, a tale-teller, and a jack-of-all trades.
Cleric: a master of divine magic and a capable warrior as well.
Druid:One who draws energy from the natural world to cast divine spells and gain strange magical powers.
Fighter:A warrior with with exceptional combat capability and unequaled skills with weapons.
Monk:A martial artist whose unarmed strikes hit fast and hard-a master of exotic powers.
Paladin:A champion of justice and destroyer of evil, protected and strengthened by an array of divine powers.
Ranger: A cunning, skilled warrior of the wilderness.
Rogue:A tricky, skillful scout and spy who wins the battle by stealth rather than brute force.
Sorcerer: A spellcaster with inborn magic ability
Wizard: A potent spellcaster schooled in the arcane arts.

Mexal - Are these the classes available to us?

For those who have already joined, shall we coordinate for better team balance?

So far we have:

LDiCesare - Fighter or Bard (seems like you can't multi-class at the start)
Cotal - Fighter or Barbarian
JordanVmp - Cleric
Kryofx - Monk or Druid
Solitair - ?
Vincible - Wizard or Sorceror
Ray - Wizard or Sorceror or Rogue

Pretty well balanced already I would say, if we have at least one of each of the main Fighter, Cleric, Mage and Rogue classes.

Matthew, do you want to join as well?

You have the classes about right. You may also play a Witch. Other options may become available as the adventure progresses...

If you have access to the books, fine - go ahead. Attributes by point-build - you have 26 points. If you don't, wait until I send out the character generation document. Then you will have all the information that you require.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

I'll have a fighter at first level, then add bard levels later.

I suppose I'll play a ranger then as none are present.

I'll fall back to playing a rogue if no one else does as it's very useful to have in a party.

As for character story ...

Lugh was a secretive character. He had been all his life. Never one to stand out in a crowd, never one to be the soul of a party. Most people assumed he was a fairly dim witted labourer and had been working on farms in the country for these past four years. The truth though was very different. Lugh had been training with the rangers in the great forest (or other acceptable location ;)) for the past few years and was now on his first mission. Still a loner he now appreciated the skills others could offer and his need for these skills. Building a friendship with fellow adventurers is his best hope of survival and completing this mission.

Yes friendship ... a double edged sword. The pain of Maire's death still lies heavily on him. A stupid mistake really, forming a friendship and bond with a thief. One his ranger trainers would not judge him for but one the authorities have already found him guilty of. He should have known she would try the robbery. The jeweled crown was just too tempting for a thief like her. If only her skills had been better. His presence, even just trying to change her mind, now has him a wanted man. Still, they have to find him first. Luckily the mission gives him a chance to get away. Yes ... The mission ...

Paul.

Our party seems to be lacking a thief . . . I wouldn't mind playing an assasin type of charecter . . . although I guess I'd have to evil, it could be fun. :D

Mexel, where are you getting your witch class? I wouldn't mind switching to that. I have the Swashbuckling Adventures sourcebook which has a witch class. Is that by chance where it comes from?

Well I think I've got my choices nailed down... I'll start out as a monk, and later on I'll either take some levels in shadowdancer (if you do prestige classes) or druid (if not)... luckily in 3E druids can be any neutral and not just true neutral, so the monk/druid multi should work out ok if I'm lawful neutral.

Some background on my character:

Sol was a lonely man. Both of his parents had been druids, and he was raised in their grove. One day when he was young though, he wandered off from the grove and became lost in the forest. After wandering aimlessly for several hours, he smelled a faint wisp of smoke on the wind. He knew it was no mere campfire, as it carried the scent of burning flesh--human flesh.

Sol ran upwind as quickly as he could. Nearly exhausted, he arrived at the smoke's source: the grove. In his absence, it had been sacked by hobgoblins--everything was in ashes, including his parents and the other druids.

In shock, Sol wandered off into the forest again. It was by a stroke of pure luck that he happened to wander uphill towards the mountains, where he was found by a group of monks of order who had left their monastery on a training mission. They sensed his distress and took him with them; later on they came across the ruined grove and realized what had happened to him. They returned to the monastery, where Sol would spend the rest of his childhood.

Sol's shock was so deep that he would not speak for years to come. The monks themselves were rather untalkative (and very terse when they did speak), so his inability to speak was not much of a hindrance. He trained as a monk of order, but never forgot his druidic upbringing--he hoped to someday return to his roots and start a new grove atop the ashes of his old one. First, however, he needed to become strong enough to bring the hobgoblins to justice.

That time had almost come. Sol had completed all of the trials, save one. He was tasked to seek out a den of chaos and villainy, and bring order to it--by any means possible. He was not yet strong enough to challenge an entire clan of hobgoblins alone, but soon after he left the forest he came across a rumor that just might lead him in the right direction...

I sent a mail with the background of my char to Mexal, but am not sure it got through (didn't receive the copy I cc'ed). My character is called Tunal, or, as he likes to say, Tunal Oeverlingen who never lies.
His background is a bit complicated to summarize here in the same forms others used. Let it just be known that Tunal is a man of honour, who will absolutely never say something which is not entirely true. He's an orphan who was raised in particularly difficult conditions and has had an adventurous youth, his love of truth sometimes leading him into troubles. More details he will gladly tell to anyone he belives he can trust (for anyone who's been in a a tavern recently, it might be clear that Tunal trusts many people with his stories).

Note to all: DM has patchy internet access between 0745 + 1700hrs BST at present (this is called work - today was occupied with administrivia and the only time I got close to a computer was when I was teaching some of the other teachers how to use an interactive white board!).

LDiCesare - no background received as yet.

If you have a Witch class - or indeed any other core or prestige class you want to play - to hand, of course you may use it. I'd been thinking of the one in 'Way of the Witch' from Citizen Games. I may require some details from you.

Demonology may be an option later on for those of an arcane bent who don't mind taking risks :-)

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

Ray, the island wasn't my idea, just the two groups. And I hate survivor. I just meant that there could be two independant groups working on different quests that might intersect and it could be up the the group to interfere with the others. They wouldn't have to of course. I would like to join up though.

Hey is there any chance we can up the stat buy points from 26 to 30 (since NWN uses 30) then we can just generate stats in NWN and not have to bother with doing it by hand (plus we get slightly better stats :P)

I'm sure that Mexal and I can do a very good deal on a seven year old little demon....

What is NWN?

Note that due to work & face-to-face role-playing, it is unlikely that you'll get full character generation details out of me before the weekend. Hold fire, and I'll decide on the point-buy figure at that time.

And, Alex, it's not nice to talk about the dog in those terms, even if he did steal your biscuits last night!!!
