OT: PBEM Role Playing

OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

Thanks for the update, Alex.

Tell Mexal there's no need to rush, we can wait for a couple of minutes more. :)

I still haven't gotten my setup yet. But I am patient.

Just so we know that everything is still going forwards, that's enough :p

Greetings!

I have now set up a Yahoogroup for this game and invited those of you who have been in touch with me to join it via their system. Please respond to the e-mail you ought to have received - or holler if you want to play or watch and haven't had one!

Character generation notes are in the files section (in Word format - is this a problem for anyone?). Read them, decide what sort of character you want to play and we'll take it from there...

Welcome all. Let's have fun!

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal.

Ok, I decided to go with Rogue first then Sorceror levels later. Going heavy on Dexterity and Charisma for my stats.

See u people on the YahooGroup. Noticed that JordanVmp and LDiCeseare have already joined.

Right, once I have details of what you want to play, I'll create a character sheet for you; then we can talk about your background, etc. If people can try to get through working out what they want to do by Friday, then maybe we could even make a start next weekend.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

I'll be doing the Monk as planned. I know that in 3.5e Monks aren't allowed to go back to their Monk class after they multi, but if they can go back and forth in 3.0 or you're willing to bend the rules for me then I'll probably add on some Druid later on.

I will let you return to monk, kryofx, but it may involve a bit of special pleading in character to be readmitted to whatever dojo, monastery, etc. we decide you trained at!

For the rest of you: be aware this is my standard method of dealing with unusual requests... can you role-play your way into whatever it is you want to do :-)

In that case I'll either just switch and stay a druid or not switch at all (but still have a good bit of knowledge about druidness)... after all, high level monks basically become demigods, so that would be fun too :P

Also, if you can, put out a little more info on the skills (how useful/necessary they are, mostly) since I haven't a sourcebook and NWN uses a simplified subset of them (some condensed and others thrown out) and I'm not really familiar with them as such.

Mexal,

How do we interact with you regarding character generation? Through YahooGroups or email?

Mexal,

What's Appraise and Tumble?

Would like to know whether Decipher Script and Use Magic Device skills are necessary for my Rogue if I would be dualling to Sorceror.

Right.

I'd prefer that people do character generation by e-mail - unless, of course, you want to everyone else to know EVERYTHING about you!

Appraise - enables you to make a reasonable guess about the value of an item.
Tumble - allows you to perform stunt leaps, rolls and falls. Think of the Claude Van Damme trademark mid-air splits...
Decipher Script - could be useful for a sorcerer as well as a rogue, it allows you to figure out ANY writing, not just the magical sort you'll learn when studying magic.
Use Magic Device - is something a magic-using character automatically can do...

Next?

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

Ok, will email you, Mexal.

For the rest of the team, here's the skills that I would choosing, just so you know these are covered.

Appraise
Balance
Bluff
Climb
Diplomacy
Disable Device
Hide
Move Sliently
Open Lock
Pick Pocket
Search
Spot
Swim
Tumble
Use Rope

If there is a bard with high Charisma, I could relinquish Bluff and Diplomacy to you so that I can specalise further on Rogue skills.

Jimmy, Human Male Rogue, Chaotic Good, 17 years

Jimmy was raised from young by a band of thieves. Having never seen his parents, he grew up learning the skills and plying the trade of a rogue. He was different to his compatriots in crime in that he always left a little behind for his victims and he never harmed them unnecessarily. His peculiarities irked the gang but they respected his dexterity and abilities.

On one fateful day, he found a plain golden ring in the gang’s loot. The ring appealed to him greatly for no particular reason and he wore it on his hand. Soon after, Jimmy became conscious of energies flowing within him and through his surroundings. Determined to find out more, Jimmy sought out a sage. He was advised that the answer he sought regarding himself and the ring could be found on the Serpent’s Teeth islands. Eager to seek the truth, he sent off on his mission. ~SDC~

End of quote

My character starts out as a fighter but will go bard, has high charisma and has some skills in Bluff/Diplomacy/Intimidate.

Good, then Tonal can be the spokesman for the party. I will withdraw my diplomatic skills. My character has high charisma (16) too due to the fact that I would be duelling to sorceror later.

I was going to do a bit of Diplomacy too, but in this case I'll just drop CHA a bit and boost WIS more, and dump the couple of extra skill points into combat/stealth skills instead.

Also with the diety info out now I'll probably refine my character background. Stay tuned.

I'm working on my character at this moment. I'm going with either a sorcerer or wizard multi with either a paladin, assassin, ranger skills. Too bad I can't have the drow class. They're pretty bad@$$. But I imagine a drow in town might cause trouble with the locals. :) I should have a backstory ready as soon as I get a few things nailed down. BTW, I haven't played since I was like 12, so you'll have to bear with me on some things.

thanks,

B

Ok, now time for the extended info:

Sol Darkwood, Human Male Monk, Lawful Neutral, Age 23

Appearance: Sol has a squarish jaw, with a well-trimmed goatee. He has longish hair pulled tightly back and tied, then cropped where a ponytail would be. He is normally dressed loosely in drab, unsophisticated clothing, and carries a quarterstaff over his shoulder with a small bag (containing his few possessions) tied to it. He is easily mistakable for a travelling peasant or vagabond—a common misperception he often uses to his advantage. The only hint that he may be more than he seems is that unlike even a peasant or vagabond, he does not wear shoes of any kind. Instead, he wraps his feet tightly with white bandages (as sandals would interfere with his fighting, he finds boots too cumbersome, and decent socks haven’t been invented yet LOL ).

Background: Sol was born and raised in Deepleaf Grove, deep in the forest at the base of a mountain. One day, when he was young, he wandered off into the forest and became lost. Upon smelling smoke and following it back to its source, he found that the grove had been sacked by hobgoblins.

Upon approaching the remains of his family’s tent, he found his mother’s mithril pendant lying on the ground amidst a pile of soot. Picking up the pendant, he noticed that the pile of soot in which it had lain, as well as the pile beside it, was vaguely human shaped. The hobgoblins had burned his parents and all of the other druids with magical flames so hot that not even bones remained.

In shock, he wandered aimlessly through the forest for two days before several Monks of St. Cuthbert (who had a small monastery on the mountain’s slope) found him. They soon discovered the fate of the grove, and took him to be raised at the monastery. There Sol trained in body and mind, knowing that he would need far more strength than he possessed if he were to avenge his family and rebuild Deepleaf Grove.

Sol’s time for vengeance is nearly at hand. He has passed all of the trials necessary to becoming a full-fledged Monk of St. Cuthbert, save one. His final test: seek out a den of chaos and bring order to it—by any means necessary.

Soon upon leaving the forest and entering the wide world in earnest, he came across a rumour that might lead him towards his goal. In pursuit of this rumour, Sol has journeyed to the coastal city of Freeport, where the ship lay docked that will take him to his destiny.

I'll be working on my character in the next couple of days. I'm not sure if I have the witch class typed up already. If not, I might be lazy and just go with a cleric. :)

I should have my details finalised soon. Just waiting on Megan to resend the data files. My email server managed to die over the weekend. Working again now though.
