OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

My character's name will be Phalanx, but I'm awaiting a list of spells so I can choose between Sorceror or Wizard.

The spells are the same between sorcerors and wizards, it's just a matter of how many you get to pick and how you cast... as long as you don't pick crappy spells, a sorceror is great, but a wizard is just as good if you can memorize efficiently :p

kryofx,

I haven't played D&D since about 1982 or so and don't remember a lot of the rules(In fact we were probably using the original rules not 3rd edition). Can you give me a run down on the differences. I know they have a different stat.

Sorcerors:

-Prime Attribute is Charisma.

-Have slightly different spells per level per day advancement, resulting in a few more spells per day.

-Can cast any combination of known spells within each level each day.

-Only gain spells at level up. You CANNOT learn spells from scrolls.

Wizards:

-Prime attribute is Intelligence.

-Get slightly fewer castings per day than a Sorceror.

-Must memorize spells in advance to be cast the next day.

-Can learn any spells from scrolls at any time.

Those are the basics. A wizard gets a better spread of spells to choose from but has to decide what he will use (and sometimes you'll run into a situation where you'll not have the right spell for the job becausae of this...). On the other hand, a Sorceror picks what spells he can use at level up, then can use them in whatever combinations he pleases (say you have 3 lvl 3 spells per day, so you could cast 3 fireballs, 2 fireballs and 1 hold person, 1 fireball and 2 hold person, etc. as long as you know the spells). As such, as long as you know the best spells to pick when you level up then a Sorceror is much better IMHO.

Edit: I forgot, Sorcerors cannot specialize either. So if as a Wizard you specialize then you'll get an extra spell per level per day (I think) but you lose out on a school or two of spells.

Wizard gets higher-level spells slightly faster than sorcerer.

From what people tell me, sorcerer is better in combat, while wizard is more versatile. But I've never played 3rd edition so I don't really know.

I'll probably be a wizard.

That too, Sorcerors gain new spell levels one level slower than wizards. BUT, the Wizard will only have 2 castings at his next level (and not gain the next casting for two more levels!), while the Sorceror will start that level with 3 (then gain another casting per level 'till he reaches a base of 6).

At level 20 (as if you'll ever get that far :p) A Sorceror will have 6 castings of each level each day (plus whatever he gets from his CHA bonus), while a Wizard will have 6 cantrips, 5 from lvl 1-5, and 4 from lvl 6-9 (plus INT bonuses).

Crappily reproduced spell castings per day per level tables: (to Clevel 10)

Wizard-

0 1 2 3 4 5 - spell lvl
3 1
4 2
4 2 1
5 3 2
5 3 2 1
5 3 3 2
6 4 3 2 1
6 4 3 3 2
6 4 4 3 2 1
6 4 4 3 3 2

Sorceror-

0 1 2 3 4 5 - spell lvl
5 3
6 4
6 5
6 6 3
6 6 4
6 6 5 3
6 6 6 4
6 6 6 5 3
6 6 6 6 4
6 6 6 6 5 3

I'm leaning toward wizard because the INT will be important in possible 2nd class after later development.

AFAIK, Intelligence is only the prime attribute for wizards... aside from that it really just nets you extra skill points. Plus, we only really need one wizard (so we have every possible spell we may need) and I would prefer a sorceror but it's your character so it's your choice :p

Well a spellsword wouldn't be too bad, I guess.

Are we still working towards a start on this? Hopefully we can get started in a week or so. I just wanted to check in with everyone else to see how it was progressing.

Well presently I'm patiently waiting for mexal to send out the character sheets....

I'm hoping to start too. Probably mexal is too busy with work.

Mexal said yesterday that she's just waiting on a few people to finish character selection. Should start this weekend. Also, it's better to use the yahoo forum for this discussion as we all then get emails. Go post friendly hello's to your characters there. It's probably a good idea to repost you characters histories on the message page there.

Paul.

Did she mention who's still outstanding, Paul? It would be easier to get their attention on this board.

No she didn't. If you log onto the Yahoo group though and look through the member list you may be able to figure out who's still missing. Whether she's waiting for someone to log on or just to finish character generation is unknown though.

Thanks Alex,
but don't make her feel that we're impatient or anything. Just interested. She most likely has a far busier work and social life than the rest of us. Just look at how many games of Galciv we can find the time to play ;)

Note that I get emails but can't access the yahoo groups a lot (not during week and not next week ends) while I can reach this board. So as far as it's BEM it's OK but beware if there are functionalities on the yahoo groups that don't get through email, I probably won't see them.

I'm basically done with my character--I'm waiting for her to give me my spells though.

I think we have heard from everyone except Cotal. Wondering if she is still interested to play.

LDiCesare,
just save the email address for posting a message on the board and you'll be fine. All messages posted to the Yahoo group will be automatically emailed to you at default yahoo group setting. You won't miss anything. I uploaded a file giving more details on feats and was considering uploading others on spells, weapons and armour. I'll wait to check with Mexal that this is ok first.

Paul.

Comes scuttling in... Er, is the 'topic watch' switch broken? Didn't get the message that people had been talking here...

Writing a review right now, will be getting this show on the road over the weekend, if that's OK with you folks. (While Dearly Beloved sits upstairs playing this weird computer game, something about assorted star systems trying to conquer each other... anyone heard of this? :-) )

If anyone else wants to play, squeak now... or come watch and you can join in later!

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

Yeah, that crazy GalCiv thing Alex is playing, what's that all about anyway? :P

To all players: I am now setting up character sheets based on the information you have provided. You will receive them as soon as they are done, and will have an opportunity to comment/correct, etc. Then we'll start the game itself :-)

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.
