OT: PBEM Role Playing

Anyone on this board has any experience running PBEM role playing games as the game master?

It's a great concept of running a traditional RPG game but through a forum much like this one. Very simply, the GM posts the scenarios/adventure and the players would post their actions, conversations, etc. The GM does all the dice rolling and resolutions in the background.

We already have people on this board who have expressed an interest to participate as players but we need someone who would be willing to be the GM. Of course, it would be best if the GM has experience with this mode of RPG.

Any takers? :)

Not to fret Cotal - there's still room & time if you wish to join in... same goes for anyone else.

Laurent, I have just mailed you your character. Shout if you don't get it!

Now on to the next one...

Gordeleth breathed the salty air with an exagerated noise. Astonishingly different from the earthy musk of Dellic's Woods back home and the crisp mountain air of the lands he had recently visited, Gorde knew this heralded an adventure unlike any he had seen.

He glanced at his new friend, Lugh, who he had recently met in the town's bar. A much older ranger, by human standards, he was a welcomed fount of advice and interesting stories. Lugh was eyeing the large ship warily, so Gordeleth clapped him on the back in a friendly manner.

"Stop looking so bleak," Gorde grinned, "this is going to be a grand experience!" That earned a dour frown from the elf.

"Humans."

Gorde grinned even wider at the pointy-eared ranger as he shifted his bow to the other shoulder. "Come on, let's talk to the captain of this pile o' wood and see about putting the land behind us. Is it true that there are places where no land can be seen? At all?"

Lugh grunted.

[I am good to go! :)]

Megan sends apologies to those who are waiting (I believe she's currently halfway through Ray's) - she's not feeling too well and has gone to bed early (obviously neither a galcivver nor an AI!)

Now sent off Brian's character...

That's the six folks who have responded so far sorted. Any more, or shall we make a start?

We will begin play on Thursday - I'll send an initial post to the mailing list. This will give time to sort loose ends or for anyone else who would like to play (Cotal?) to chip in and get a character aboard.

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

Thanks Mexal!

I'll send you the feat tonight, and send a brief physical/personality description to the list as well.

By the way, is there a good place I can go online for spell descriptions?
I'll do spell descriptions for the 2 wizards if they like. But not tonight because I am about to go to bed. Probably Thursday, as well as starting the game (Hoo-Yah!).

Hugs and kisses,

Mexal the DM.

OK - players & lurkers - 'system test' on the mailing list... you SHOULD have received a message, please respond if you do.

If you don't get one and want to be on the list, holler here or by e-mail.

We start tonight, when I get home from work :-)

And here we begin (posted here for general delight - players please respond to the e-mail, not here!): -

Since dawn, the Serpent's Teeth islands have been getting steadily
closer. Breakfast saw your ship navigating past a small island on which
some kind of giant construction is being erected, and in towards the
main island of the cluster, on which the town of Freeport is located.

Your captain's grumbling. He's just discovered that the vegetables he'd
intend to sell here have all gone rotten. His only profit is your
passage fees... which as you are now arriving are due. 100gp a head.
Cash. Now.

So, whatever your reasons for arriving, here you are. Freeport - a new
place. He didn't know much, but the captain says that it was originally
founded by pirates, and for a long time was a really wild place. Then as
other seafaring nations organised themselves against the pirate threat
and sent whole fleets out to protect shipping, so too did the pirates
band together for mutual protection. Eventually, and after about a
decade of warfare, the captains elected a leader, Drac, and settled down
to more civilised life. Of course, being pirates, even this was
accomplished amid bloodshed and treachery... That was almost 200 years
ago. Since then things have been a bit more peaceful, with a succession
of captains occupying the office of Sea Lord, supported by the Captains'
Council. Fifty years ago, a descendent of Drac called Marten Drac was
appointed, but this seems to have been a bit of a mistake - including
the imposition of a law stating that only descendents of Drac could be
Sea Lord. The next incumbent was Anton Drac but he was assassinated,
being replaced by a hitherto unknown cousin called Milton Drac - who
began the construction of a massive lighthouse.

The shore is lined with docks and warehouses, with businesses and
taverns catering to seafaring trades. Inland there is a small walled
area, the old city, surrounded by more sprawling suburbs. Crime's on the
rise, so keep a hand on your wallets.

And so you arrive. The captain, now he has no cargo to sell, is eager to
be off; so you and your possessions are dumped unceremoniously on the
dock.

During your time aboard you have got to know each other reasonably well
- so it's assumed you know each others' names, professions, etc.

The action on the docks is mesmerising. There are ships in port from all
over the world, carrying every manner of exotic goods. Sailors and
merchants of all races and backgrounds mingle on the wharves, with money
changing hands so fast you can barely even follow.

As you stand there, you all notice a toothless man with tattooed
knuckles approaching. He smiles crookedly and says, "You've all just
volunteered for an exciting life at sea. Do you want to go the easy way
or the hard way?"

He taps a belaying pin meaningfully against his hand, and you realise
that eight similar individuals, tough-looking fellows clad in ragged
canvas clothing and armed with saps and belaying pins, have formed a
loose group around you.

What will you all do?

The pressgang seems poised to attack...

Phalanx casts a spell at their leader, while everyone else bristles,
preparing to respond... then Gordeleth steps forwards.

"Gents, this was not quite the welcome we expected. Why don't you
forget about threatening us, and I'll buy you all the first round of
beers. I could probably convince my friends you made an honest mistake
in our identities if you show us the best bar here. No?"

The leader blinks a couple of times, then looks slightly embarrassed.

"Er, mateys, guess youse right... um. Let's look for pickin's elsewhere,
these gennelmen wouldna last a couple of storms, like. If youse goes
aways into the walled city, you'll find the sort of tavern that you'd
like, like."

The pressgang fades away into the crowd...

... to be replaced by a young man in robes who steps forwards bowing.

"That'll teach them to pick on newcomers," he says, laughing. "But where
are my manners? Allow me to introduce myself. I am Brother Egil, and
I've been looking for people who can take care of themselves, use their
brains in difficult situations. If you'll allow me to buy you a round of
drinks, I'd like to talk to you about a job. What do you say?"

You wish, Ray!

I'd suggest you wait until Mexal has had everyone's turn and posts what happens, rather than treating this as interactive fiction - at most post what you propose to do!
