DX Email Notifier(s) configuration.

I'm embarressed to reveal my ignorance in this area but, after "Umpteen-th" efforts and an equal amount of failures to properly configure a DX Object email checker(s), I have to show my hand. (Or would that be my red face?) I don't know what info to supply in the "Login" field. Is it my email address? My name? The b1fip*** letter/number combo my ISP issued me? I've tried everything ... except the right combination, of course ... and any info will be *greatly* appreciated.

Hi, Rauhn.

In the login field,it depends on your ISP. Some want just your user name, some, like Earthlink, want your [email protected] (or whatever the name of your ISP). I'd assume the combo that your ISP issued you is your preliminary password. Chances are you'd just put in your login at the "Login" field and your ISP will respond with a "Password?" query. There's probably a web page that you can go to if you want to change your password.

There, I think I've exhausted the sum total of my knowledge on that subject. I'm sure there are others who are much more knowledgable then I, but I thought I'd just pop off a quick response to help you at least part of the way.

Very thoughtful of you to take the time to respond. I have to know that my confusion is a matter of semantics. The Properties tab on Outlook Express shows the b1fip*** combo is in the field following "Account Name" and directly below is my "Password". I'm still left wondering if Account Name = Server Name = Username = Login ... if, in fact, they're all one-in-the-same.

I've downloaded several email checkers (I specifically want to use Tiggz GT3) and filled-in the b1fipy** letter/number combo after "Login", as well as trying my first and last name and my email address, and none of these attempts got the Object(s) to work properly. It has to be ME as the half-dozen mail checkers I've tried to use can't all be malfunctioning!

This should be such a simple matter and therefore it leaves me doubly frustrated and feeling very foolish.

It can be confusing if you're not used to playing about.

Let me give you an example from Tiggz's work.

This is for a pop3 address - specifically Yahoo.co.uk

SERVER: pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk (an incoming mail setting)
LOGIN: myaddress - do not include the @yahoo.co.uk bit
PASSWORD: mysecretpassword

N.B. Ensure that your firewall is allowing the DX object access to the Web.

Thank you, Citizen The Journeyman, for literally spelling it out for me! *Slight* exaggeration, but I'm now going to download GT3 for the 48th time and see if I can get it to work for me

If it does work, do you have a color preference for the new car I'll buy you?

Hi Citizen The Journeyman,

No apology necessary as I wasn't mislead by your previous post.

I do thank you for trying to help me but I'm afraid GT3 will not work for me no matter what I try to do. Firewall configured to accept DX objects, email fields entered properly (again, thanks to you) and still ... nothing. After 2 days of trying, I give up.

I wonder though if it's a compatibilty issue with the latest version of DX?

One last thing to consider Rauhn. Does the email account you are trying to check require a secure connection (SSL)? If so this may be the problem. For example, even though Gmail now allows POP3 access, I can't check it through the DX mail checkers as they don't allow for secure connections (as far as I have seen). That could be the problem.

Raun,

I take it you are using sympatico with the b1fipxxx ID. If so, in the GT3 mail properties dialog box highlight "Incoming Email notification" (Additional Abilities) and then press Configure.

Under Account configuration in the Server field tpye in "POP8.sympatico.ca". without the quotes of course.

In the Login field type in your "b1fixxx" user ID. no quotes!

In the Password field type you sympatico mail password.

Make sure the POP3 button is chosen.

Click OK.

This works for me. Hope you can get it to.

Thank you BlueDev. I very much appreciate your in-put! But, I don't have a secure connection to email and the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is 'clear'/not check-marked.

Thank you fellow Canadian, Hankers, for also trying to help. I *do* have a sympatico account. It is however designated as: POP1.sympatico.ca. This is what I've been entering in the Server field. With doubts, but also with nothing to lose, I entered POP8.sympatico.ca, Apply, Okay and sent myself an ecard. As has become usual, nothing. Re-entered POP1.sympatico.ca and did the same procedure and still nothing. (You don't happen to be in Toronto, do you? Maybe you could drop-by and make this thing work! )

Seriously, I want to thank everyone who has tried to help me out but I have to know it's not meant-to-be and I'll have to put it to rest. (and the Board breathes a collective sigh of relief!)

I'm about 500KM from Toronto so don't think I will "drop-by". Try one more thing.

Under the General Tab in the "Location" field select "msimn.exe" if you are using Outlook Express as your mail client and then press Apply.

If you are using another email program you will need to have that program's executable in the "Location" field.

Also, in the Account configuration (where you put Server, Login and Password) make sure the "Check each ____ minutes" is not some high number. You have to give time for the program to start checking your email.
