Middle Earth PBEM Gamers needed

Hello Fellow GalCiv players.

I am going to host a Middle Earth Play by Email RPG. I am looking for some people who wish to be players.

The story will be set in 2761 Third Age in the old kingdom of Arnor. The current Chieftain of the Dunedain, Arassuil, is organizing a force to oppose the new strength of Angmar which is growing again. He is going to call this force "The Rangers".

This will use the Coda rules system, Not D&D. Anyone can learn magic, but you will not be casting fireballs and lighting bolts to mow down orcs. The magic of Middle Earth is more helpful than harmful.

As for fighting, only when you have too and be careful not to walk into a trap. The enemy can afford and will gladly loss a 100 orcs to kill one Ranger. Therefore pick your fights carefully and you will survive to fight later.

Also the people of Middle Earth do not wear lots of amour, except when there is a large set piece battle. If you read the books or watched the movies you know that Aragon, did not wear any amour until the battle of Helm’s Deep. So do not expect to find +5 Amour or +5 swords lying around.

I am accepting Dunedain, or Men of the West only at this time. You can be of any order (class) to start, but you have answered the call of your Chieftain for all able bodied men to meet at Fornost to help defend your people from the evils of the world.

If you are or wish to be a Hero of Middle Earth, please let me know by posting here. If you have questions concerning how a PBEM game works, please ask and I will provide you with more information.

Celeborne your humble DM

I'm interested, but you would have to explain all the rules and what happens, etc. Send me an [email protected]

Coda? What's this? You should probably post a link on what that system is because I've never heard of it and am pretty sure many people are in my situation. I know MERP, though.

May be interested. Haven't played Merp in a long time though. Used to love the skill system. Will think about it and let you know in a day or so.

Hello all interested parties. Here are some answers to your questions:

Grand Admiral Sherbert – The rules are fairly similar to your D&D rules as all role playing games are. The difference is you only use 2 d 6 plus bonus – enemy bonus for all actions.

The way PBEM works is that I will post a scene and then you and the others will send me your reactions. I will then response to those posts, etc, etc, etc.

I will do all the dice rolling that is required here and just provide you with the results. In stead of telling you how many points you have received, I will describe injuries and you should role play them.

As for magic, skills, and your attributes, I am putting together a brief introduction which will help you generate your character. After that it is up to you where and what your character becomes.

LDiCesare - I used the MERP system before and really liked it. The problem is you can never find the books anywhere. At least I can not.

I will place a link below which will let you look at the Coda system. From how I read the Core Book, they are trying to make the system much more in tune with Middle Earth. Magic is helpful and harmful, but generally in ways which stay true to the books. For example, there are no healing spells. There are spells which will help a person heal quicker, but you still have to recover over time.

Solitair – The skill system is similar to the old MERP and the newer D&D. I am sure D&D took the best part of MERP and started using it.

To all it should be a great time in Middle Earth. It is after the Long Winter and you will be developing the order of the Ranger’s which Aragon will be the Chief of in a few hundred years.

Here is the link and let me know if you are interested. I already have the first several chapters ready to go and I only require some hero’s to be to add life to the game.

I'm sorry, when I said the rules, I really meant all of them. I've not done a role playing game before, so I haven't a clue what the rules are. :sniff!:

If you could maybe direct me to a website that has all the rules on it, that would be helpful.

Hello Grand Admiral Sir!

Sorry I did not understand your question. I did send you a direct email, but again it does not have all the rules.

For all the rules, be it CODA, MERP, or D&D requires 300 to 400 pages in a player's book and then at least one more for the DM, etc.

I did find a site earlier which did explain rules in detail. I will try to find it again. When I do, I will forward the link to you.

If I can not find it sometime today, I will send you some more details directly.

Otherwise, you can learn on the fly as most of us did when we started way back when.

In short, your character can do anything a normal person can do. If you wish for your character to swim a river, he can try. We take his skill in swimming add any bonus due to your strenght or nimbleness and add a ramdom number, from rolling dice, to this to come up with a total. If the toal is the same or higher than the difficultly level you swim the river. If it is less you may get swpet down the river for a ways etc.

Combat is a little bit more diffacult but it is really the same. You attack someone with your sword. We take you skill with attacking, add any bonus, and add a random number to it. We compair that with your targets defensive skill. If your number is higher, you hit them. Once you hit them enough they fall down dead or run away.

In combat you can defend, try to trip someone, pucnh them with your fist, push them out of the way, what ever make sense.

Again, I will try to find that web site for you and send it too you. You could always stop by a local Border's type store and glance throught any of the role playing books. They are normally near the SciFi and Fantasy section.

This is based on Lord of the Ring's, which is published by Decipher. But D&D is very simliar as all the role playing games are based on D&D. really differant names and requirements for eash skill, but they are very similar.

You can check out www.decipher.com but I do not think they have the full book on line. But I will look around and see what I can find for you.

Hope you give it a try as it can be fun.

No problem numbtenor21.

If you have played D&D you will have not problem here. Different terms for the same items and a different way to roll the dice for results, but the elements are the same.

I will send you some information on character development to your email later today. Look forward to seeing your character in Fornost!!!

Celeborne, I'm interested.

My experience has only included D&D, I'm afraid. So I don't know the rules to LOTR at all.

Anyhoo, if you need an extra player then let me know at my email: [email protected]

Will massive familiarity with LOTR be required, or will one be able to 'wing it' if they've only watched the movies? (for the record, I have read the books - but this was a long time ago)

Stofsk - You do not have to be an expert on LotR. That is one of the reasons I chose the time frame. It will be history by the time Bilbo, Fordo and Aragorn show up in the world.

Welcome aboard, I will have the basic information ready either later this week or early next.

I might as well start the introductions. I am definitely playing (if Kevin will have me :D ). I haven't come up with a character yet, but I will.

Now, my name's Chris Szitovszky. Stofsk is just a shortened version of my surname (and it can use it). I live in Aus and I'm 21.

I'm a fan of LOTR (and Galciv, though this goes without saying). Who else is playing?

Hello Chris,

I will send you the information to start building a character tomorrow. You will be a Dunedain, but think about which order you would like to be at the start.
Welcome aboard.

I am still getting all the information required on to the group board. Once that is done I will provide you with an email which will allow you to sign up.

Ray, I will get you set up for lurking soon. I have got a Yahoo group started, but I need to get some more stuff added to it before I start the invites.

Who knows, you may just find the lure of the ring is in Middle Earth!!!

Right now Mexal is starting on her character. I would like to have at least three or four more.

Talk to you all later.

I'm in, just send me whatever info I need to make a character.

Celeborne, go ahead and send me the info for it. I won't start right away, but I might see about joining in later if it looks good or if mexal's game slows down at some point. Grab my email from mexal's PBEM.

Hello Darth and all others who might be interested.

Below is an address you need to send an email to. This will allow you to join the group. I have uploaded some information, but will keep working on adding more.

There is a character sheet you can down load if you wish and you can look at what I have done so far.

I am currently looking for one elf to take part in the game. If you are interested let me know. First come first served as they say at the bars.

I will get back to everyone next week as I have company in town until Tuesday. That is when I will start working on the character generation for the people who have joined already.

Regards to all,

Kevin

Hello All,

I now have all the elves I need. SO the rest need to be humans. Please remeber that this is the Third Age and the time of the elves is passing and the rise of man for good or evil is coming.

I will be out of touch the rest of today and tomorrow. I will be back on Tuesday to get things rolling.

If you have not received a notice that you are part of the Rnger's Group, please send an email to the address in post #17 and I will get you on Tuesday. This will be for Lurking or active RPG.

Thanks for the interest and We wil get started next week.

Kevin

Ksmith0711,

You are welcomed to join. I am just started to generate characters this week. If you are interested, please send an email listed in Port #17 above. That will allow you to look at what has been done so far.

I only have room for humans at this time, so I hope you do not mind playing one.

Hope to hear from you,

Celeborn
