Bug Reports for 1.13

Bug Reports for 1.13

Please post bug reports here for version 1.13.

If you are asked to send a save game, I will need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name.  Zipping them usually works best.

My e-mail is [email protected].

Please give detailed explanations on how to reproduce bugs.  More information is better than less.

If people start out reading this thread, there will be less repeat bug reports, and it will be easier for everyone to read this thread.

Thanks.

I actually have an update on the status of the invisible ship bug.

We have a special debug mode that lets us run games of Gal Civ where it will just ignore the human player (essentially it's like if you just kept hitting the turn button without doing anything, but the game doesn't end until an AI player wins).

So I setup a gigantic galaxy with incredible aliens, and let it go, using my laptop to work on other things. About an hour later, the Altarians had won (apparently by culture) and so without restarting Gal Civ, I loaded their EndSaveGame and started looking for missing graphics.

The graphics that were missing weren't even listed in memory, and just trying to load them may be junkifying memory (I'm still in the process of trying to reverse engineer exactly what happens to cause the bug based on the current results in memory).  Working backwards is, of course, much harder than being able to catch it just before it happens, and watching what happens.  With any luck, I'll be able to find a way to catch it just before it happens with what I find out by working backwards.

So I don't know for certain if the bug is caused by sheer quantity of ships or the quantity of different kinds of ships.  Or both.  If I can narrow down exactly what area of code is causing the problem, I will be able to make a new estimate of how long it would take to find and test a solution to this problem. If the new estimate is more reasonable than 2 weeks, I may be able to get the go ahead to try fixing the bug.  However, the problem is still obviously deep in the guts of Pear, so it is not going to be a quick fix.

XenocidalManiac: Yes, I would like the save game.  I need both the .sav file and the corresponding folder.

[email protected]

End Turn Skips Moves Left means that once you hit the turn button, all the autopilot ships are supposed to move, and even if they have moves left when they reach their destination, they're supposed to stop and let the next ship move.  It doesn't always work that well.

On the invisible ships-- don't know if my experience is consistent, but I see it under 2 conditions--first, my game has been active for many hours without restarting galciv (I run on a laptop, so I sometimes have a game sitting in the background for days), and second when I have a type of ship I haven't previously had in the game. Usually I get invisible capital ships, occasionally I get an invisible defender or something if my survey ship finds one late in the game and I never had one previously.

Would like to verify it thi is just my system or everyone else see's the same thing... I have started too many games to count to check it out but on any new map in Sector: 0,0 Parsec: 0,2 is always clear of the Fog of War.

Word missing from text on the Report for the Arvanitians: It reads "... they are quick anger ..." Should be "... they are quick to anger... "

Please let me know if spelling and word errors should not be reported in this thread or not at all.

Interesting. In all other reports I've seen, that bug doesn't manifest until after many hours of play (thus BillKo's remark). IIRC it is a memory management problem. Any chance you have a funky memory chip? Do you have anything unusual running in the background? An unusual memory manager?
End of quote

G'day HtL, I have posted more details in the thread titled" Question for Hurley". To respond to your questions though. Memory chip fine, was checked with diagnostics, behaviour not happenning with our 'hungry' games/appls such as morrowwind. No memory manager running. Nothing unusual, as far I can tell, also regyularly use spyware removers etc to ensure clean as possible. (I will cross post this response to other thread.)

It's a known bug.

And who says that the player doesn't get any starting bonuses? ;)

Hurley: all good info for CariElf.

CariElf: frankly, your diligence is amazing, though I'm sure you're tired of hearing about this frustrating bug. Interesting that Hurley sees it early on. Also interesting that the problem is visible in your saved game (and that shutting down GalCiv and reloading normally clears the problem, re-initializing *something* apparently. I guess if you saved a position every 12 turns or so, you might be able to discover when the problem appears. Time-consuming, to be sure, but it would sure help to be able to see the transition.

The reason that it shows up in the save game is because the graphics are already in memory.  I couldn't shut down Gal Civ, start it again, load the save game, and see the bug, or I would have fixed this months ago.  But the game ends and plays a cutscene, so to check for missing graphics, I have to be able to go back to the game.

Aviator99 UK, do you know how you're getting it so that it has the next button when it should say done?

The best I can offer is:

Late game, about to invade last planet, save turn, dunno exactly what may have come up at start turn but it wasn't relevant so I would have F1'd or done asap.
Invade.. win.. planet screen "next" not "done", good job I saved the turn because I hit next and it went straight to desktop. reload exactly the same.. win.. etc etc. and the planet screen has "done" correctly.

Hmmm...sounds like if you have both events to view, and you invade the planet.  I'll look into it

Are you bumping for the general audience, or is there an issue I haven't resolved yet?

Gettint lots of CTD's I have the last 3 saved and are reproducable by loading and playing the save games.. (to get them i've gone back to prevous save games and taken different paths.. I hate it.. I can't seem to get to finish a game anymore..(as you can see by my lack of games submitted) even saving and reloading doesn't work :(

use this link and follow instructions in the zip -> Link

Hi,

I downloaded and installed the zip files referred to above; the game still locks up when the UP decides on a tech trade, no matter which choice carries the vote. Furthermore, CPU usage jumps up, it takes about twenty seconds for Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager, and the only way to close the "Not Responding" GalCiv is to End Task.

This does NOT seem to be a fix for the lock-up. Is there something which works, or is to be released soon?

My apologies for the tone in the msg., but this has happened about a half-dozen times since installing v.1.13. >:(

Thanks,

LS

The "fix" sidesteps the issue by renumbering all the techs. It'll still get caught in its infinite loop if you have techs with ID numbers over 199. If you're using mods, it'll probably be easiest to just remove the offending UP issues until the next patch.

A problem and a possible bug:

The problem or exploit: The Draginol will happily trade away 150K for 1 trade good. This was rather silly. This has probably been reported previously, but I figured it deserved another mention.

The possible bug: The Excalibur tech has disappeared. In my last two games on reaching Near omnipotence I do not get the option to research Excalibur tech. As far as I can tell the Excalibur is not an alignment based tech so I should be able to research it.

My bug list for v1.13 after playing half a dozen games. Some of these have already been reported, but I'm just going to compile them all together.

(1) After a while ships start becoming invisible. This is especially problematic on "gigantic" maps, suggesting that it's a resource management issue. All ships of a given class (e.g. Terran Corvette or Altarian Ranger) become invisible, though I can see them move with the "show alien moves" option set.

(2) AI races like to make decisions after loading a game. I often get declarations of war or peace right after the game loads.

(3) The tech-sharing UP locks up the machine. (FWIW, I was able to kill it with ctrl-alt-del under Win2K.)

(4) The game occasionally just exits to the desktop (very rare).

(5) The metaverse submission stalls after pressing "submit". The scores are being submitted, but I have to hit "submit" then "no thanks" then alt-tab away and back to get to the main screen.

(6) I had a survey ship (not a Star Hawk) with 16 attack. I did have Star Hawk researched, but I didn't expect it to upgrade an existing survey ship. (Note the survey ship was built during the game; the original one had been destroyed.) Very convenient for killing space sharks though.

(7) The morale in the star system view (click on the star) doesn't update when you offload people until you click on the planet. This also comes up after building a combat transport with auto-launch enabled and auto-build disabled. When the production screen comes up, the morale has been updated for the current planet but not for other planets in the system.

(8) On the trading-stuff screen, there are hyperlinks for techs but not for trade goods. Annoying if you can't remember what Ultra Spices does. (Maybe the bug is that I haven't played enough?)

(9) On the trading-stuff screen, the mouse pointer seems to be offset (perhaps the hot spot is at the bottom of the pointer?).

(10) On the governor screens, the pointer is okay but the scroll wheel zone is off. If the mouse is in the bottom 1/4 of the top list and you use the scroll wheel, the bottom list moves (easiest to see on Military Swap late in the game).

(11) Scroll wheels don't always do what you expect. Trying to scroll a list on the diplomatic screen and having it add destabilization to a friendly race is potentially dangerous. (Go to Foreign Policy, then Stats, then try to use the scroll wheel on the Misc list.)

(12) On the Domestic Policy / Stats screen, the Abilities display is word-wrapped in such a way that the percentages don't line up with the names. You have to scroll down to see where "Interest Rates" is on two lines. (And what did I do to get a "-4%" rate??)

(13) On a few occasions I've clicked "turn" to start the next turn and nothing happens. I can still operate the controls and move through the various screens, but the AI doesn't move. Reloading doesn't help, quitting and reloading does. (One time I managed to shake it loose, but I can't remember how.)

(14) The dates on saved games should read "18:07:03" rather than "18:7:3". Looks better. Would be nice if it showed the game month/year too.

(15) If you find enough "25% to research" anomalies to finish the current project, your research automatically switches to the next project on your list. Which is good, but a little warning would be nice.

(16) If you research a new government, you're offered the opportunity to change to it. If you trade or steal it, you're not prompted to change.

(17) Sometimes ships seem to be moved halfway between grid squares. Most common with newly-hatched space sharks.

(18) If I tell my ship to move in a particular direction, and there's anenemy ship in the way, the enemy ship is attacked. Which isn't so great when your corvette flies into a battleship. It's necessary to be very careful when flying around during wartime.

(19) The color of my treasury in the lower left corner doesn't change from yellow until I go into the economic screen and look at it. I can't quantify the exact circumstances for this one.

(20) As mentioned elsewhere, loading a saved 1.10 game after updating to v1.13 causes the game to end immediately. Perhaps the version number should be embedded in the save game file...?

(21) I move a convoy of combat transports and a dreadnought to the target planet. The dreadnought attacks, goes down to zero moves. I screw up and click on an individual combat transport, which takes it out of the fleet. If I re-fleet the entire stack, the entire stack goes down to zero moves, because it's stacked with the dreadnought. How do I create my invasion fleet without moving them to their own square?

(22) GalCiv.com web site annoyance: getting to page 12 of this message board requires going to page 10 and then hitting the right arrow. There doesn't seem to be a working "next 10" button at the bottom.

(23) I've been playing "4x in space" games since the original Reach for the Stars on the Apple II. RftS, MOO, MOO2, Stars!, SE3, not to mention Civ, Civ2, Civ3, MOM. I've done very little but play GalCiv for the last week. Well done! :D

I cannot get the game to play since getting 1.13. I lock up just after hitting the play game button. the screen size changes, and the game hangs....

THis probably isn't a 1.13 problem but not sure where else to post. Submitted agame and it does not show. Any known slowdowns etc?

Hurley, I was having problems submitting games a while ago for no apparent reason. Try manually re-entering your name in the alias field. Sounds crazy, but after that it submitted right. :notsure:

Thanks, will do this evening.

Wanted fix:

When you have multiple survey ships on auto they often end up going to the same spot, thus being horribly inefficient. Is there any way to fix this? Manually searching on large+ maps is brutal.

Oh man, this is a long thread.

Any chance someone would be willing to type up a sort of "digest" just of the important info from this thread which new 1.13 users might need to know?

My version is 1.13.080. Is that going to be the UP bugged version?
