Strange Drengin Tactics?

Following an unfortunate diplomatic incident the Drengin and Arcean's went to war. As they were both fairly evenly matched in terms of star systems and military I rubbed my hands at the prospect of my two enemies wearing each other out. However, The Drengin rapidly destroyed the Arcean fleet.

Strangely, however, despite the territory now being ripe for the picking they didnt invade any of the Acrean systems! They had the opportunity to double their empire but didnt take it. Their vastly superior military just cruised around Arcean territory desroying Arcean ships as they appeared. This has been going on for most of the game, well over 100 turns and they have the technology for combat transports. I'm at a loss to understand their tactics! :notsure:

Any suggestions?

I've seen this before as well, except that it was the Arceans vs a minor race. Once the Arceans had destroyed the minor's fleet, they just sort of floated around, destroying any minor ships as they were built.

So I gave the minor a few Avatars to bolster their military :D

I did help them out by giving them all my obsolete defenders and corvettes :) As a Pangaeanist I have been waiting for the Arcean's to see the hopelessness of their position and follow the Altarians and Yor Collective in turning themselves over to me voluntarily. However, as their leadership is clearly not enlightened I may have to offer the people of the Arcean empire the benefits of becoming a Terran Protectorate - in return for invading their systems myself of course. ;)

All I can say is, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. It's kinda pathetic if you ask me.

Just another free gift if you ask me. :D Perhaps the death furnaces were under refurbishment for all the extra Acrean slaves. LOL

I don't know for the Drengin, but I'm pretty sure Altarian transports work just fine: yesterday a few months befor etheir cultural win they had 15-20 planets, against my 3. After the land grab early in the game, they had only 2 planets. I don't even know what/who they put in those transports!

Actually, you can use this to your advantage. The AI will often not launch a transport unless it see it as undefended.. I've found that by leaving a defender or corvette on a planet and then rushing a ship after the attacking ships is out of range, I can avoid having AIs come with transports.

A word of warning: the AI will sometimes launch groups of offensive ships and transports.... if which case my strategy is to try and seperate the ships - offensive ships will often ungroup to chase and hostile. Then move in with a fast ship will a frigate to take out the transports and any remaining escort.

i just had a game where the Carinoids had complete dominance of space. I stopped building defense ships as they were destroyed one after the other. They never tried to invade me and i won by Culture.

I can verify that Transports will attack undefended starsystems as I generally don't guard mine. It's probably because I've been playing normal level, but I have yet to see the AI use any strategy in attacking (like transport groups). I may dump a defender per planet as I raise difficulty level to ward off annoyances, but at this time, I think a defender advantage of roughly 4x on highly populated planets is doing just fine.

p.s. with regards to strategy used in attacking... I've been attacked by empty transports, so I think the AI view systems as undefended if they have no ships and don't consider anything else :P

Most minors won't invade. They're not trying to rule the galaxy, just survive in it. Exceptions are the I-League, Draginol, Fundamentalists, and some others I can't remember, who are trying to take over the galaxy.
