Map Editor Problems

I seem to be having difficulties getting the map editor to function on my computer. Every time I load up a blank map, all I see is a blank star-field with no grid. If I attempt to place an object onto the map it comes up with an error message stating "Objects cannot be placed too close to the border". When I attempt to load a map, the hardware rendering fails, and the GPU-recoverer bundeled with ATI's catalyst drivers restart the GPU in software-mode only.

I use:

ATI 7200 series (drive 6.14.10.6436)
P4 1700MHz
Windows XP SP1
Latest version of AP (the release candidate)

Can anyone help? :notsure:

After you open the map editor, trying selecting new and see if you get a grid then.  For some reason the map editor isn't initializing properly.

I noticed this problem and, at least in my case, the map was magnified to the max. I used my scroll wheel to reduce magification and get squares with grid lines so that I could place stars, etc.

Ugh, sorry missed that the second time round.

Have you tried running dxdiag to make sure that there's nothing funky with your version of DX? Like running a debug version or something?

Yep. This drove me nuts when I first got the AP beta... as I didn't have a mouse with a scroll wheel, and there is no menu or keyboard command to change the zoom level.

I went out and bought a cheap USB mouse with a scroll wheel, but the program should still have menu and keyboard commands to change the zoom level.

I try and zoom out, but nothing appears to change. I click to place a star, but this time an error message appears saying "An unspecified error has occurred". :(

I hope the editors are much improved in the full version.

Well the map editor works for me, but as reported in the bug thread, the starting locations for all the races (homeworlds) dont work. Once the game starts the homeworlds are randomly assigned to completely different locations. My homeworld setup is identical to the homeworld setup of the existing custom maps, except mine dont work
