Who is the USS in GalCiv?

Hi All,

Just bought the game, and am having fun learning the ropes. I have one nagging question. How come all of the ship names default with the USS designation, i.e. USS Hero? I would have expected the default to be along the lines of TAS. I guess I can manually change each name if it bugs me, or better yet fix it with a mod. Anyone know what file would have to be adjusted to make a global change?

Really? Is that from Star Trek? I always scratched my head over the USS Enterprise too. Now I can sleep at night.

Staffa didn't make it up. Frogboy confirmed in a long gone post that that was the answer and also that he boosted it from Star Trek.

I don't know any way to *globally* hack the prefix, I think the answer the modders found was that there isn't one. If anyone can correct/update that statement please do.

Well, nice guess Staffa. ;)

A better Trekker than I can probably give details but I believe the Star Trek universe uses Universal, or possibly United, followed by Star Ship as it's designator, and an excuse to stick with USS.

Whichever it is, Frogboy gave Star Trek as his inspiration for using USS in GalCiv.

Ever wonder why the organization that they worked for was the UFP, the ships had the title USS, and the numbers on the ship started with NCC? So, Kirk captained the UFP NCC-1701 USS Enterprise... What the hell did NCC stand for?

NCC doesn't officially stand for anything; it's just a registration prefix. Other ships have prefixes like NAR, NSP, NX, etc. It was invented based of the prefix used for tail numbers on aviation aircraft... N stands for USA, C stands for civillian. Matt Jeffries threw in the second C just because it looked neater.

Actually, I seem to have read elsewhere (possibly in the book "Inside Star Trek") that the designation "NCC" was lifted off some naval blueprints that Gene Roddenberry happened to see, and that the acronym stands for "Naval Construction Contract".
