Game Strategy???

Does anyone feel like sharing their idea of Strategy?

For instance, I always research the universal translator and then Nano Tech. Is their a better approach?

My main reason for asking is that after x number of turns, (before i build any good ships) They all declare war and come over with Battle Cruisers and kill me.

Meanwhile I can't even build a Battle Cruiser yet. Last night in one game, I had just started production on my first defender and the Yor came over and killed me with 8 Battle Cruisers.

Should I start reasearch labs sooner?

Thanks

Hi Captain,

What I do is univ trans first then whatever to get defenders.
I buy on fist turn a scout, then a colony ship. Otherwise you won't know where the best systems are, and they will already colonised.

Hope this helps

I do a mad rush for colonization and building up infrastructure.

First element is to plan a rough idea of where my empire is going to expand initially. I'll even bring the colony ship back into orbit to add some additional population so that my first colony will have a better base to start off. I will do this with new colony ships in general whwnever the population can support it (far easier to rebuild a colony from 80 -> 100 than 10 -> 30).

Buy a scout first turn as well. Then a colony ship. Boost tax and spend rates as much as you're comfortable with. I will bypass a close class 16 or 17 world to get another comparable one closer to where one of the aliens would be likely to get it first. This ison the assumption that I'll still be able to crank out a colony ship to get to the bypassed one first (even if I have to buy a ship and populate it with only 5b people).

Heavy focus on military production of colony ships and research tech (to defender path). Soil improvement on the new colonies until I've established the initial empire (including a couple of colony ships sent to start a strategic bastion somewhere out of the way in the galaxy).

I don't think the point here is that any one strategy is going to win consistantly. But any strategy that leaves you weak in the eyes of the other races is certain to leave you on the short end of the stick.

The first thing to do is to try your strategy at lower skill settings ("cakewalk" or "easy" with races at "idiot" or "dumb") until you get a feel of the game and how effective your strategy is.

The next thing is to try to colonize other star systems a quick as possible and the best planets you can find first (lesser planets in a single star system can be colonized later to help build up your tax base). Start by restricting yourself to planets of class 15 and up. Later, to see how your game plan is affected, try planets with gradually lower classes and evaluate the results for how it affects you.

Colonizing a planet with only 10M colonists leaves the planet in a state where it grows very slowly at first. Adding colonists to your first colony ship (the "USS Discovery") should help. But be careful of colonizing planets with lower classes with lots of colonists. The morale of those planets will be low. Once riots due ot low morale gets into the game morale will become a serious issue.

Most importantly, play around with the features as much as you can to learn their affects. A lot of personal preference will enter into how these features work for you.

Cheers,
Jack

Use the limited diplomacy available :)

I am often quite rich in my games, yet very poorly defended initially....often they have masses of battlecruisers while I have virtually nothing still...Try monitoring their status regarding you in the diplomacy screen, and if they are getting 'hostile' towards you, buy them off with about 100bc, which is good for 1 level up in relationships :) or even keep goin up till an informal alliance exists.
