USS ?

Very minor nitpicking, but if I can accept the very unlikely event that every country on earth decide to join a planetary governement from now to 2171, I find it rather incredible that they would choose to prefix their spaceships'name with the prefix used by the american navy... ;p

I hereby compete for the minorest nitpicking on the game :)

I don't know, Richellieu (or should we call you Cardinal? ;) )...you've got some stiff competition for the Minorest Nitpicking in a GalCiv Forum award.

For example, I could point out that "minorest" isn't a word (and thank the gods that I don't have any kind of spell check feature for forums...it would smack my knuckles for that word). But that complaint really doesn't have anything to do with the game itself.

Guess I'll quit babbling now and go do some minorest amount of work.

I object to the Americanization of this game.

Call Star Ships something like UEF "Unitied Earth Fleet".

And while you are at it have more non US leader, instead of Bush.

Leaders like "Gandi" or "The Pope" may be neat.
or for the Evil
Leaders like "Hitler" or "Stalin"

You can change your leader's name. You can also (via the PREFS.INI file) change the names of the leaders for the alien races, too. It's a small touch, but it looks neat when you go to talk to the Yor leader, and he comes up as "Ambassador 10110". ha ha :D

That makes me wonder, is there also a way to change the "default" name for ships? Maybe I should look through those files more closely. Does anyone else know?

To a degree I agree but it is made in America, and you can change the name of the political leader. As for USS it's good enough for Star Trek so I don't mind that so much but what could be done instead of Capital ships being numbered they had a name like the Hood, Ark Royal, or indeed Enterprise.

In game, you can change the default name allocated
by the program. Double-click on the name in the stat
window (above the AT and DEF points), and you can name the ships whatever you want. As I said, it was an extremely minor nitpick :) But a little more seriously, it may be good if possible to have a file with a default name of ships ? Not that it is very important with the amount of fleets we can me moving by the end of the game.

I think the code allocates a ship's name in parts. The prefix, "USS" for terrans, "Drengin" for the Drengins, etc. is taken from the race (but haven't found the file yet where the "USS" is kept - The other race's prefixes are in the prefs.ini file in the data directory). The second part comes from the files that describe the ships (*.ship files in the "data" directory). The last is a number generated by the code.

*comment on first two quotes out of order intentionally, for sake of logic flow*

'Very minor nitpicking, but if I can accept the very unlikely event that every country on earth decide to join a planetary governement from now to 2171, I find it rather incredible that they would choose to prefix their spaceships'name with the prefix used by the american navy... '

'As for USS it's good enough for Star Trek'

It is notable that the term is never actually used in any Star Trek script, although you are correct in so far as that that designation is usually on the ship's hull.

Whether the US Naval designations would be used or not is entirely up to debate. As far as Star Trek is concerned, it's used because the Federation is indeed American in origin. UFP HQ is in San Francisco.

That may or may not be the case for whatever government GalCiv's Earth represents (but it's likely that this is not the case, as that would conflict with the need to research a Democratic type government).

'(but haven't found the file yet where the "USS" is kept - The other race's prefixes are in the prefs.ini file in the data directory).'

I'd have to guess that it's currently buried in the code somewhere, as I haven't been able to find any references to it either.

Should oversites by Paramount be componded? Strange though while they never mentioned at least up until now what happened to countries; in Star Trek countries no longer seem to matter in the Star Trek universe.

Maybe USS stands for something like "United Solar System".

It stands for United Star Ship just like it does in Star Trek.

In Star Trek Star Fleet was part of the United Federation of Planets. In GC we have a United Planets, but the UP is not anything like the UFP.

It's for United Earth.

"In game, you can change the default name allocated

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere but which file controls the deafault "USS" and the ship names?

Lucky Jack,

There's no racial prefix that i can see in the prefs.ini file.

Yep, in my games alien ships have no prefixes.

I think some of you should do some research before posting. This is the third time this waste of a topic has come up.

Relax, purefx, it happens on popular boards. If it's not new to you (and it's not new to me, either), just skip it. :)

How does "United Earth" become the abreviation "USS" ? :p

As for the Yor, a better name for the Ambassordor would be Ambassador 110100110 :)

Actually, starfleet HQ is in San Francisco. The UFP government is in Paris. (I know, I know, but I actually was paid to know that once.)

Since this is a nitpicking thread, I'd just like to add that an even better name for the Yor would be Ambassador 11010110, making it a byte (8 bits) and not 9 bits, a number not divisible by 4 since the Yor like bits and nibbles. At least that's how I figure them. Actually, [twisti], your Yor name should be Ambassador 0000000110100110 (making it a 16 bit word), but I think my byte is shorter and sexier. ;p

edit feature needed... :) search and replace above: "bits and nibbles" => "bytes and nibbles".

Actually, the name was supposed to read "101010" (or "00101010" if you want) - if you "decoded" it you'll understand why :)

Aaah, a little DA reference, funny! :) Btw, did you have lawyers type out the original binary code for you? 110100110 => 00101010, hmm :)

Guys, it's "United Star Ship". Has nothing to do with the United States. And no, the prefix isn't settable.
