MOO3 on December 4

I've been a Masters of Orion fan for years. MOO 2 came out 6 years ago to the day almost.

MOO3 will come on December 4. I'm quite excited about it.

Obviously also rather nervous about it since we never expected GalCiv's release date to be so close to MOO 3's.

I am also excited about MOO3. But I am just as excited about GalCiv. Each has it's own style and I find each to be enjoyable(previous MOOs at least). I do wonder what effect MOO's release date will have on the success of GalCiv. The market for strategy space games is relatively small compared to others types of games. And MOO does seem to have very dedicated following.

I hope those that purchase MOO will give GalCiv also give GalCiv a try. This might be a strech though, given the close release dates. I will be buying MOO3 and I believe both games will fing rotation in my play time. GalCiv has been well worth it so far, even as a beta.

Wish there was an edit option in this forum. I suppose I better read my post a little more before hitting the submit button! :notsure:

I think MOO3 is gonna kick GalCiv's ass. hahaha
From what I can tell, MOO3 has more details than current GalCiv.

To be fair, you have to compare the current GalCiv to KangaMOO (aka the MOO3 mistakenly "leaked" to Australian game mags).

MOO3 is a complete game. GalCiv is not. If you want to compare the released MOO3 to GalCiv, wait a while, and compare finished products.

I am looking forward to MOO 3 as well, but I find testing GC/Win takes up so much of my time that I wonder if I will even have time for MOO3. So I think I will wait.

I am waiting for another reason as well: to hear what the rest of you say about it, especially those of you that played MOO2. Extrapolating from what I have heard so far about MOO3 I think there is a risk of great dissapointment, somewhat akin to the comparison of CIV3 to CIV2. I think CIV3 forgot it was a strategy game and went wild with the eye candy.

I'm also afraid of this. It sounds like a good game, but I don't like some of the stuff Quicksilver has done to the franchise. Plus, the thing that GalCiv has over MOO3 is the fact that it will be improving after release... I can almost picture Quicksilver taking the money and running...

You guys are right. MOO3 is making some fundamental changes to the MOO2 theme. I'm not sure if I'm gonna like that. I was dissappointed with Civ3, cause I remember what Civ2 was like.

I really think that MOO3 will be much better than CIV3.
MOO was the first game i bought and have been a fan since then. I will buy both games and here's why:

- first i love space strategy games and space fiction/movies. :D . Just can't have enough of it.
- MOO3 is the empire based game per se. Great Diplomacy.
- GalCiv has all these events, great Diplomacy, nice UI, Inner Politics and more. Furthermore it doesn't have starlanes (i am not sure i am gonna like those in MOO3). I am a bit concerned by the balance as i already said in another thread. It seems that one Race gets always much stronger than the other ones.

One thing i have heard so far in some communities, is that people don't like that much the interface (especially the galactic screen with the ships)and the combat resolutions à la CIV. This may keep some player from buying it i am afraid. :(

not me... ;)

To be fair, i think it will be good for GalCiv and STars! Supernova genesis.. granted i believe stars is a ways from being published, but if MOO3 does well, sales for Galciv will increase and Stars might get a publishur. Tho whole 4X bandwagon, similar to the quake bandwagon. And you all hope stars gets a publisure, the rules language where you can change just about everything to form your own rules and sceneios is a nice one.. Then i could be biased since I worked a little on the game (till they lost their publishur and i stopped getting paid)

its good for the 4X genre in general that both are coming out so close together.

Well one thing that will be nice is MOO3 will have to stand on its own merits.

That's the main MOO3 screen. Now, people like the aptly named "Master Lame" think it'll kick "GalCiv's ass" without having even played it.

So I'll be happy when there's something that can be played and judged on its own merits and not just the title of the game.

well if there's one thing Stardock is good at it is designing interfaces. However, I don't like the current combat model of Galciv. And there's almost no control over resource management for planets.
In this game, it takes like 20 battlecruisuers to kill a single battleship. Cause while the hitpoints decrease very slowly, the battleship gets stronger by leveling very quickly.
No ship customization is also a big drawback when compared to MOO.

I tend to agree, however i consider both games as very different. The gameplay isn't the same at all.

GalCiv isn't a star ship battle game. If you want that, MOO3 will be out shortly.

The two games are not even remotely the same concept. I think they will both sell very well because they are like apples and oranges. If the product keeps being constantly improved, Galciv will make ground because strategy enthusiasts are always looking for a good buy. And with the support, galciv is a good buy.

MOO3 will be successful, it has all the earmarks of a good game....provided that there aren't a plethora of bugs. The real question is how badly oversold the market will be during the Christmas season....there are a lot of good games out there and MOO3 may be picked up by enthusiasts, but the general public may lose it in the shuffle....after all its the RELATIVES that are buying the games in the Christmas season.

Galciv is not going to sell a million right off the bat. Galciv is going to start slowly and pick up speed over the next year. Unlike other games, it won't lose momentum but will gain it constantly. I figure by this time next year the gaming world will be standing up and taking notice.

Does anyone else *hate* the UI in MOO3? Or am I the only one? The look of plain, no textured, light blue screens/buttons makes it look very un-appealing to me. If anything, it looks like a website rather than a game.

I wish they would've taken the UI from MOO2 and just enhanced it.

In my opinion, there's definetly one thing Galciv has over MOO3 and thats the UI :)

I kind of like the UI from just the screenshots, the real test comes when actually having this User Interfacing with it. ;)

Just curious, have any of you seen the screnshots of the battles and ship design in MOO3?

Wow. Those screenshots look like something made by someone who designs shareware games. Too bad you have to pay $50 instead of $15. Keep up the excellent work, Brad and gang.

Those images are old shots. The more recent ones look better. But seriously, since when do graphics matter?
Do you knwo where one can find newer ones? Those shots came from an Avault article this week.

I wasn't commenting on the graphics either way.
All I can say is the battle screen has to be one h*** of a lot better than that for me to consider it worth my money. And the ship design screen shots, do they look much more difficult to use than they were in MOO2, or is it just the way I am looking at them?

So maybe I WON'T buy MOO3 after all.

The ones on Avault were all released elsewhere before. There was a long time where those rare previews or bits of info didn't come with any new info. Here's some that are newer, and probably won't be too different from the final version.
