I've lost a game or two where my teammates got lazy because we were "winning" and the other team got busy and rolled us back, they they paid attention and we rolled them back.. then we both had giants and our team had less AoE and lost... So it happens..

Just have the game start and say "shuffling teams" and randomly assign people to each side. That way its less likely that all three buddies will play on the same side, but still possible. This would be amusing and leads to the buddies being annoyed but *meh*

Modem router combo units are inherently BAD. Get a separated modem and router and your issues will disappear.
