Use those shortcuts all the time. Wish there was a hot-key page in the options section of the game. I'd like to be able to customize them.

Well coming from someone who never-ever had an interest in a game like Civ (yuck) or any other boring turn based game, I love GC2. It's sci-fi (#1), it's totally *NOT* boring, and it can be played a gizillion different ways. You have to do some planning and management, but not too much to make it laborious and enough to make it interesting. It's just a really great game and 95% fun.
disregard
Try setting the game resolution to 1280x800 (same as the desktop) through the prefs.ini file. Fullscreen mode doesn't like it when the desktop and game resolutions are different. I also run a 1280x800 screen on my laptop and the game does support that resolution no problem.
46 here.

Start easy and small with only a few races, then work your way up. Go for wins like diplomatic and influence. Once you've won a few small easy games using the less involved ways to win, move up to bigger universes, more races, and harder difficulty. Try the military conquest. Lots of ways to play this game, but that's what makes it great. Here's what I do (for what it's worth). The #1 thing to concentrate on in the beginning of any game is to gobble up as many planets
You can get a GeForce 6200 off eBay for less than you would pay for the game itself. That's a fairly modern GPU with 9.0c compatability.
Got the notebook, thought I'd post my success in case anyone else is looking for an inexpensive one that can do a good job running the game. I picked up an Acer Aspire 5672. I ordered it from Newegg.com. Link It's really nice and runs the game perfectly. It comes with an ATI Radeon X1600 which is a decent GPU. It also has a dual core processor which makes for some good CPU horsepower. Pretty
The other option is to use Windowed mode which *requires* the screen resolution to be lower than the desktop.
Bought my copy off-the-shelf, haven't had any problems with the serial number. You can copy the number to the clipboard and paste it. Don't have to type that horribly long string of numbers if you just save once to a text file or pull it out of an email.
hehe, got a laugh out of that one.
Things you wish you'd learned several games back. Hehe, not to make posts stating my opinion before I knew the finer points of the game.
If you look in the races.xml file, you'll see exactly what races get what "free" bonuses. The Drath probably get the most so playing as them is a good way to play. Custom race gets a fair number of free bonuses so it's not a bad race to play, but the Drath are better. In any case, those are free bonuses and are supposed to be there. You can clear them by checking and unchecking, but why? They're free.
The whole CD copy protection idea is one that really burdens the user for the sake of protecting a publisher's financial interests. Often these protection schemes are cracked within days of a game's release. There are no-cd exe files for a lot of games floating around the net, but using them caries some risk since they are cracks done by people who just like to do that sort of thing. The whole idea is really quite ridiculous and stupid. Stardock has the correct approach. The onl
Actually, there's a lot of info in the game's video tutorials. It's easy to forget about those so if you are confused about something, check there first. Otherwise, yes, there is little detail on some of the finer game points, but you can always ask here. People seem more than willing to throw info your way if you ask for it. As far as the "flasks" go, I don't pay any attention to that. I just look on the research screen and go by how many weeks (turns) it says it takes to resear
BSG is my favorite, then SGA. Don't like SG1 much because a couple of the characters I don't care for. Like the cast of SGA better. Really like the ambience of BSG and the the cast. $.02
BTW, there's no way I could win above tough difficulty if I didn't take advantage of weaknesses in the AI and whatever else I can in the game. It's a lot of fun just finding ways to do it. Call those exploits if you wish, I just call that learning the game and it gives it more depth.
Wow that was a long winded post. The OP seemed to have touched a nerve. I enjoyed reading Brad's rebuttal. Thanks for that. The OP seemed like nothing but a very long rant to me. I don't really understand the point of that. If you don't like the game, move on. Why come here and complain to everyone who for the most, really likes it.
I like the range and speed challenge of the gigantic map. I run loose clusters, abundant habitable planets, abundant number of planets, and uncommon stars. Those settings maximize that challenge while keeping habitable planet numbers around 100-150. I enjoy it, although you are right, there's a lot of waiting when your best ships have move numbers pushing 70. It's the number of habitable planets in the universe that loads the CPU. You can max out your processor on a large map if
Noticed that as well, but I figured I'd give them some time to work it out before saying anything. But yea, would like to see those little text tips. An option would be to just place permanent text below the medals.
Well, it's really up to the designers how much they are going to hammer the players with penalties. I don't believe in that sort of thing because *I'm the player* and I should get goodies or nothing, not get screwed, that's not fun. Problem with leaving the council is those trade routes get you over that hump early in the game when building costs more than you're making. The same is true for the auto-survey cash. However, once the game is a few years old, trade routes and anomolies
Most of the time when the council meets, you get questions that offer little perks when you win and it's fun. However, I encountered a nasty one that ruined my game. It was a new game I had invested a couple hours into. The vote is for restricting survey. I lost the vote and on the next turn, all of my ships that were happily auto-surveying anomolies reported they could not find any more. I had only explored about a tenth of the universe so there were still lots of them. It wasn'
Same problem, fan spins up full blast. CPU on 100%. Would be nice if the game knew how to idle. Although, I've never seen a 3D game that doesn't tap the CPU full time. Don't really know the mechanics of it all, but I think going into 3D mode taps the CPU regardless of what else is going on.
Yea, I would like to have an ability to increase the rate at which ships move as well. I find myself waiting a lot.
