Defenses are not useless. Instead of trying to build the Great Wall of The Trader Emergency Collation, you place them around important resource nodes, major trade routs, your production centers and capital. They a good at delaying attacks until a real fleet can arrive but they could do with a slight cost decrease, not a great one but a decrease none the less.
Schod declared that HW2 didn't have ship evasion beyond the corvette class. I am setting the picture straight.
Nothing larger the a corvette made any evasive actions. AT ALL. Ships would move to bring the most guns to bear as possible, but SoaSE does that too. Frigates and up can move in combat but the player has to actively order it. You run campaigns all the time. Want to make a push into another empire's territory to take a major resource node? That's a campaign. That's the beauty of SoaSE. You make your own goals. YOUR the emperor. You make the rules, you set the goals. You lead your growing empire to victory or ruin.
Ever watch Babylon 5? A *frigate* in Sins is about the same size as a Hyperon class destroyer (1200m). If you look in the manual, the capital ships tend to have tens of thousands of crew on them. Think super star destroyer size. How much movement would you expect there?
I always looked it that way. Frigates are massive compared to what most pepole think as a frigate. Watching a Cobalt do loop-de-loops would be like watching a Star Destroyer do loop-de-l

SotS is ok. Its a watered down "hop in a go!" turn based 4x game with real time tactics. I liked the art work, but I am a very open person. However, I found that the technology was a bit shallow, even if its random, simply because there is no point researching, say, long range fusion when you can get antimatter which is better then everything, if only to stop the annoying "you have stuff to research omg!" messages. The ship customization isn't really. You always end up with the same basic set up

Its sad with brick and mortar stores now. They seem to have a vendetta against PC games in general. Back when I wanted Ground Control II, I went to a EB Games and couldn't find it on a shelf, I had to ask them and the cashier wondered out back after asking what exactly it was. :NOTSURE: He manged to find it though. Similar thing happened with CoH, CoH:OF, and even the Orange Box. Except rather then not even being on the shelf at all they were wedged in between such classics like Barby Horse Adv

Well, reading some of the excitement around the web, its safe to say SoaSE was one of those games that kind of sat on the side lines, and then once out the gaming world said "Oh **** we could of missed this!"

I was a bit unhappy that the current issue of GfW didn't even mention SoaSE, but I am sure both PC Gamer and GfW will have very large reviews on it next month :) Eh, I guess I will stop listening to The Fallen Empire to see this :(

They still link to your home planet. In some cases its a good idea to move your capital to a planet one jump from a star or to the new system to get better allegiance. Stars eat allegiance quite a bit (2 jumps minimum).

Don't under estimate the black market. With a good system of refineries, you should have a large excess of metal and crystals. Watch the black market and sell a bunch when prices jump from some one buying, you should make a neat profit.
I hope you are kidding? Hell, Asteroids had moving ships and combat back in the 70s. Did you ever play Star Control? Freespace? Pirates of the Caribbean? And if you look at land-based games, they are rife with fluid combat from the 90s on. Even the most recent Star Wars game has ships moving in space when they fight - not all of them, but most of them. And no realism value? Last time I checked, things had inertia. The closest corollary to space combat would be navy battle and those ships

Nope I found it before, it makes star-star jumps almost instant now (mm trade ships!)
