4 health items + 1 helm vs 2 helms

So these are the likely items you will choose from in any game (or they should be anyways)

Banded
Unbreakable
Nimoth
Hauberk

Scaled Helm
Plenor Battlecrown
Vlemish Faceguard

I am finding if I am playing higher level games I go for the 4 + 1 helm.

If I am playing a lower level game, I go for 2 helms + 3 health items.

Why?

In a higher level game I am not likely to get a kill 1on1, so the mana to chase is not required. What is important is flag control and more gank resistance... the extra HPs are good for this.

If I am going to get a kill, it is usually a gank, and the extra mana is not required.

In a lower level game, I am not likely to be ganked well, and I am more likely going to need to make my own fortune by killing less than perfectly cautious demigods 1on1. So the extra mana is required, and the extra HPs are not.

Anybody agree with me?

In a high level game, I can usually never afford items like Narmoth, and when I can, I am likely to trade in a cheap health item for Groffling instead. When this happens in a high level game, it's usually because the opposing team has made a very bad mistake. (eg: with some serendipity we kill 2 or 3 DGs in a mass confrontation and lose none)

Dualist is also questionable since auto attack is unlikely to kill a good player, ganking and skills are what net you a kill.

In a lower level game, I would rather have the extra mana over a chance to crit.

only reason i take those items are because my main build is pure slam rook, i only need vlemish + unbreakable for mana, the hp+armor on dualist is nice plus the crit stacks with god strength and lifesteal to make it more useful. i know that towers do more dps in theory, but they cost a lot of mana and are not guaranteed to focus on the right target, whereas your auto-attack can.

i can usually buy these imba items before or shortly after lvl 10, because i take solo lane with a monk idol, chain cap flags, and get some imba tp ganks to stack up the kill count. then they get pissed off and focus you, so you can just blow sigil taking all heat off your allies allowing them to add to your already imba dps and take out entire teams and the rage quits pour in.

if somebody beats me to level 10 and outgears me, game is probably over.

any support general i take 2x helms and 3xarmor/hp (if you get 60% armor you wont die ever with bishops). nimroth / cuirass / warplate

Depends on char. Dont take double helm on UB for instance, and it's questionable if you need it for assasin oak, or rook. But for Erebus or sedna? If you don't take helm your mana will be depleted after a few heal or after one or two bat bite stun combos.

Hauberk is a huge waste IMO.

100 more health and 10 hp/s for 1750 just doesn't sit well with me considering what else you can get for the price.

Haubrek is 600 HP it's +100 HP for minions. That said, I do agree. Haubrek is pretty much the worst low-tier armor in the shop in terms of effectiveness/gold. Nimoth's is cheaper and better, Haubrek isn't THAT much better than Banded (except for minion builds and even then) for three times the price...

I get it when I play pure-Ooze (5 + .... 0?) but typically my three "armors" look like Nimoths, Scailmale, Unbreakable. If I'm rich I upgrade Scailmail to Dueler's or Vengence depending on the builds I'm playing against.

I think that the only two builds that just don't work to well without 2 helms is Assassin Erebus and Assassin Oak. Tower Rook is probably a good candidate for a third. I typically get 2 Mana-items as Sedna but one of those is Nature's Reckoning which is mostly an AoE/damage item than a true "helm". Still, it's not that much worse than Plenor for that purpose.

For assassin oak 2 helms are really needed.

Typically i like to upgrade in this order: (monks) - banded, vlemish, nimoths, plenor, unbreakable, (bishops) hauberk (replace banded) - ***this really helps the staying power of the bishops - what good are they if they are dead after one AOE??*** , groffling (typically replacing unbreakables).

Sometimes i'll snag scaled helm if i get pushed back to the citadel too early...

For my Sedna it usually goes (in order)

1. Unbreakable (health + mana)
2. Scalemail (cheap HP)
3. Vlemish (all the mana I need)
4. Nimroth (all the armor I need and extra HP)
5. Hauberk (extra HP for cheap)

The rest of my gold is spent for monks and bishops, citadel upgrades, sigils, teleports and locks. As Orion says, at high levels, it's more important to control flags and protect against ganks. Game play is very very conservative. If you are two feet in front of a capped flag alone, you're likely to be killed because the whole enemy team can and will TP in on you. I played a game where I got punished for that severely and as a consequence fell behind in levels to the point where I was useless. In really competitive games, the consequence for dying is not just the gold, but the loss of a team member to cap and hold flags for up to 30 seconds. And you will lose 30 seconds of money and experience.

This is the difference between casual and high level, and, frankly, why I'm not a really good high level player.

Well, if we're going detailed...

First off, Monks if I'm a general. No way I'm getting anything other than those, because they're too damn effective, healing for a Banded Armor every few seconds
So, items:

1. Banded Armor/Scaled Helm - Depends if I'm a mana-heavy DG like Sedna, or something that could use more staying power.
2. Scalemail/Banded Armor - Depends what I got in my first purchase, and if I sold it later. In any way, I'll always end up both Scale and Banded.
3. Vlemish Facepalm - By far the best mana item in the entire game. I always buy these if I can, unless I'm playing an ooze UB.
4. Unbreakable Boots - If I went Scaled Helm, I'll sell that to get these. They're nice, HP, HP regen and Mana, what more can a man want?
5. Nimoth Chest Armor - Scalemail and Banded armor wrapped into one, nice. However, if I'm a general, a better Priest is more important than Nimoth.

If the game proceeds into the Filthy Rich zone, where I can buy 4k+ items without sacrificing my Citadel participation, I'll get either the Groffling Warplate or Narmoth's Ring, and it would replace either Banded or Scaled.
