What were some Demigod sales figures?

Many people at another forum are consistently claiming that Demigod was a huge failure "blah blah blah blah". It was my understanding that it sold pretty well actually, and while it's multiplayer is likely about as good as it's going to get (but still FUBAR), it's still a fun game. I can't seem to find any raw sales figures though. What was the production budget? How much did it make? How many copies were sold?

Demigod was one of the top 10 best sellers at retail according to NPD for the first 3 months of its release.

I'm not sure, by what definition, Demigod could be considered a "failure". 

It should also be noted that going on a year later, Demigod is still at retail -- albeit at a lower price than when it first shipped but anyone familiar with retail stocking knows that in today's environment, PC games don't stay on the shelves unless they are selling pretty well.

It took forever to find in an actual store. I got the last copy after checking four stores. It's an underrated game, mainly because of the bad start due to pirates raiding the multiplayer. So let that be a lesson to you. Kindness is not rewarded in business, at least not in the short term.

23% of stats don't make much sense without some sort of frame of reference. 

So - actual numbers aren't going to appear I'm guessing, but can you clarify what top 10 best sellers at retail means for the first 3 months of its release? This means there's a list of 2009 pc games releases and demigod was in the top 10 for sales in its first 3 months?  Is that what you are saying?  Or does that mean something else completely?

Whoever said that, is probably insane, because as Frogboy said, Demigod was 1 of the hottest games in the market, for the first 3 months of its release.

Thats why I bought it, and I wouldnt spend my money on something else if I could get it back.

I consider Demigod a Success-Fail game though, because while it sold many copies, was and still is an amazing game, it gets shadowed by the many bugs and problems it still has.

Just my 2 cents

It is definitely the most under-rated game of the past two years or so. It is unique, more complex yet simpler at the same time than HoN (haven't played LoL yet), beautiful artwork...if only the multiplayer had worked as advertised out of the box the game might have hit it big. Still, I will be playing it for some time.

retail doesn't include sales on Impulse. That's something to consider as well...

The most widely accepted provider of retail sales figures is NPD.

For the first 3 months of Demigod's release it was in the top 10 best selling list of NPD at retail.

And even today, I can walk into my local Best Buy or Walmart and pick up a copy. They re-order new units each week.

OK.  So, that means that when demigod was releasesd, compared to all other PC games out at that time, it stayed in the top 10 for sales for 3 months.  And to be clear on my part, I'm reasonably confident based on what's been shared that dg has been a success for GPG and SD.  That said, I'm very confident you are more familiar with NPD and what its various categories mean than I am, so I appreciate you fleshing out the details a little bit.  Thanks!

It's too bad that almost no one who buys the game actually plays it.  At any given time there is 50-150 people online.  I remember back in 2003 playing bf42 and there was 15,000 online while starcraft had 125,000 at the same time.  No idea how many people are online in games now, would be fun to look up.

Funny enough, Brad's right and you can find DG in Walmart. In fact, when I 1st picked up Sins, it was either Sins or DG.

Yeah, I don't understand how you can play this game by yourself. I would get extremely bored because you can't talk to computer players in the middle of the game and they present no challenge after you reach an average joe skill level.

How about: it will never reach the same fanbase size as Starcraft, Diablo, WoW or DotA. Nor will it be around for as many years. Dude, you've got to aim for the top spot (if only in your dreams )

yeah - it's reasonable.  I hear you, though.  I get bored with ai games, but a few of my buds love playing against ai.  Crazy stuff.

The same group that is calling Demigod a failure is probably the same group that still considers the Wii to be a no good piece of garbage fad that will die any... minute... now.

Frogboy, if you and GPG decide to do a Demigod II, you should hold a focus group with the active DG players. (private forum)

I know Chris did this for Supreme Commander with some of the active Total Annihilation community, and it was great to see some of my ideas and others be incorporated into that game.

If demigod sold well, why is support so shitty?  It doesn't compute.  If demigod was really raking in the $ the patches should be a lot more frequent and updates should be a lot more frequent.  But they are not, Demigod comes off as shovelware, a game that made perhaps a moderate profit or recovered it's development costs but not much else.  Since after market support has been so awful (still critical game state errors and bugs, freezing and crashing to desktop once in a while).

GPG is just horrible at after market support of their games, the same thing happened with Supcom 1, the game on release was not properly playtested and the expansion didn't fix a lot of issues the first game had and made some worse (simspeed issues). Not only that stardock PAYED GPG to make the two extra demigod characters, why would the publisher PAY the developer to make extra content for a game that was making serious money on it's own?  Doesn't make sense.

Considering the state of the economy, that in itself is an achievement.

I too have the feeling that DG had much higher potential, but its initial problems plus SD's relative inexperience in managing the online community didn't help. But that doesn't mean DG didn't sell well.

I do think the artwork in DG is fabulous and one of the things that makes the game such a gem. The characters look good zoomed out but I love zooming in and looking at all the detail on the demi's and there little character moves, like Sedna patting her....... cat.

Hahaha Niz32 has begun a crusade against GPG.


Go play other games please, coz I dont need to hear youw whining. FA fixed a lot of(most) the issues that were plagueing Supcom, and it remains imho one of the best RTS's ever made.
