I figured since it is inevitable, I will start a thread to get ideas out on a star wars mod. Who will the sides be? What will the map look like? Units? Tech? etc.

EmperorParadoxnt I didn’t get as much time to work on my map as planned. I was going to release it today or tomorrow but I had some problems with my computer. It looks as if this map might take me over two to three weeks to complete. I am thinking of totally overhauling it and making one giant star. Then it would be more easier to travel in such a big universe. I am compiling as many star wars maps as possible and I am using wookie-pedia to help me identify each planet. This is what I have so far, but as I said I might scrap the hole thing( picture below).

Perhaps you can make the galaxy a bit like they did in starWars rebellion/Supremacy. So clusters of planets, linked together with 2 or 3 other clusters of planets by 2/3 jumplanes. It might not be the most accurate representation of the SW galaxy, but it was an effective and user-friendly way.

I don't have much experience with Galaxy Forge, when you create a number of stars, do they get their Z coordinate assigned at random, or is it possible to create a "flat" galaxy? Because a flat galaxy map with many different star systems would be more immersive for Star Wars than one giant solar system. And if its flat it would be way easier to navigate and overview than a 3D spaced map...

So any other ideas on how to make a almost 200 planet galaxy/universe what ever. If someone could get me a map with stars then I could make it, for now I am still putting random stars. It looks unofficial and its pissing me off.  :(

Sector maps would be a must for multiplayer, but in my humble opinion, one cannot have Star Wars without its sprawling galaxy waiting to be conquered. Its an epic space opera, needs an epic map. ;)

And yeah... handcrafting is a pain in the neck. But what can you do.

Mmm i think its important to note what ManSh00ter said. It'd be wonderful if Forge had a cropping ability so once could make one master map but then later crop sections to become sub maps of a sort for online games that want to utilize 'smaller' arenas.

Also I think the map while a wonderful thing isn't as important as gameplay. As EvilleJedi pointed above he was interested in sector maps and frankly one only needs a few maps to begin truly play testing the new game mechanics of the mod. Due to the largeness of the map itself I feel like it should be broken off into its own thread either on this site or swrebellion or another third party site if need be so it can be focused on individually by a dedicated map team. The map itself can easily be integrated/applied towards any mod then if its made right. Wormholes can act as safe hyperspace lanes to connect sectors as someone else mentioned and within sectors one can fly between planets as you do currently in Sins.

To tackle the map as well many people have already come out here wanting different things (Vong, not vong etc). it is important to judge the timeline aspect. One year book/timeline wise can alter alot (Planets destroyed/made barren, new asteroid bases, shifts in galactic power and planet allegiance).

Keeping all this in mind (Im unsure if anyone else raised these various points) I thin it strengthens the arguements that a few sector specific maps should be created for some sandbox enviroments while a seperate team heads up the creation of an SW Map that can supplement the SW mod..In reality there could be several different mega universe maps (BBY/ABY, Old Republic, New Republic, Post Vong, Ssi-Ruvvi period etc). I believe Tman if he plans to scrap and start from scratch should perhaps work off a specific time and period and then use a map that most accurately reflects that time of the Universe.

Anyhow thats just my 2 cents. and for those wondering im an avid SW Fan who had played the games read the books and RPGed/Simmed em as well. Hey to anyone here from http://www.swsimforum.com

I have come to the conclusion that making the full SW galaxy is impossible. On my map there's like 200 or more planets. But then each planet is really a system. And, for example, I made the Coruscant system in galaxy forge. THIRTEEN planets and one sun, so fourteen in all. For ONE dot on the map. You'll have to take a page out of EAW's book and just make the main planet of a system.

Making star systems with only one or two planets has an unfortunate effect of watering down the gameplay and also removing many significant and fun situation arising from fighting in a system with more sectors.

I would suggest a compromise. Instead of sticking to canon, I believe a galaxy map with circa 60 systems, each containing 4-6 sectors would be more than enough to satisfy even the most megalomaniacal of the armchair emperors. A game on such a map could easily span months.

So is it a 60 system map at least 8 planets each? I got about 200 planets summed up in my head, also the time period was very interesting I would rather do the Vong timeline because of the abundance of planets. Here is a very good website has maps together, it also has the time lines witch is very cool.

For those unaware Uzii made a few great planet mods (Oceanic, Urban etc) I think these would fit great for star wars maps/mods as it would allow more realistic depictions (Endor, mon cal, coruscant).

Evillejedi if you need help play testing or coding for the SW Mod let me know id be happy to pitch in.

Finally I have been try to get an account sine beta 4 came out(when I tried inter my account info kept sending to a page that had “1.35a” and that’s it. finally I went to a place with a T3 line and used that
so this is to EmperorParadoxnt I have little to no experience in map making (this is the first game that i have tried it) but jest give this some thoughts ok…OK?... *hum* well alright from what you said you could change the graphic of a Star, also you could change the gravity well size…stay with me here. Ok now the point of the trade routs are to make travel faster through the galaxy something akin to a freeway. Ok now let me put these elements to gather first like you said the stars can be made to be nothing but dots{having them be nav points would be even better} seconded we almost completely get ride of the gravity well this way you have transiting points or instead of stars(only for the ones that are on the trade rout).
Now like I said earlier a trade rout is nothing more than a freeway so what I have designed (but not implemented do to lack of skill) is the same thing you have your freeway(trade rout) and you offramps(transiting points) that are semi closes to important places(and relatively few of them since you can go to any star in the in the freeway system) . Also since the gravwells are so small there will very little down time between jumps but you could also station a fleet with an interdictor there to “catch” opposing fleets moving to important sectors

I did use a spell check from Microsoft word , the reason it is so bad is because I am dyslectic(one time I had a guy ask me if English was my second language). As for me being another Thrawn it is simply not true you have to be a clone or some thing Thrawn2787 only a clone would have a name like that!! I am the one and only true Thrawn!!! *ignores clone Thrawn’s restraint and shoots him with a blaster cannon* one less nuisance worry about :HOT:

Why is everybody focusing on the map? That is secondary imho.
Getting the ships visuals and abilities right should be the priority.

agree!! I can't wait for this, or any of the other race/ship mods..kinda gets old seeing the same 2 other races/ships

Where I think having a star wars map is great, there are tons of maps being made that would be awesome to play on as well as endless star wars maps that could be made throughout the time line.

Is Empire, and Alliance (or Rebel) going to be seperate races with own ships I take it?
