Freespace 2 mod any one?

Freespace 2 mod any one?

Just curious if any one mentioned a freespace 2 mod? I think that would be great seeing as its one of the best space sims ever made.. With a 3 races too, terrans, vusedans, and shivans.

That's not a sound file, its the blue blob for the psi-beam origin.

Oh okay I see what you mean. Yeah. Damn, that sucks...Ah well. I'm a scrub at modding so bare with me lol. I gotta say though, what I did get working sounds pretty good ingame >_>! I'ma go polish up the tec beam cannons.

Right now I'm just trying to replace the sound effects with those from Freespace 2.

So far the only things I see which can be a bit problematic is the fact that, beam weapons do not power up/power down in Sins and there is no sound effect for ships entering warp, but there is a sound effect for ships powering up warp engines.

Also, capital ships share the same warp entry/exit sound effect as frigates. I don't remember if this was the same in Freespace 2, but I do know that there are at least two types of warp entry/exit sounds in Freespace 2 for fighters/large ships.

To sum it up:
1) I can't tell which beam weapon sound effects are used for which ship in Sins.
2) Beam weapons do not power up/power down in Sins
3) There is no 'warp entry' sound effect in Sins (just the engine reving)
4) Capital ships share the same warp exit sounds as frigates (don't remember if this is the same in Freespace 2 though)

I loved the sounds from FS! Any way to make phase space jumps look more like subspace? I loved that crazy watery swooshie thing, kinda like stargate. And the beam weapons had such a distinct sound as well.

I have no idea if it's possible to be honest. The files are there and already made. I just don't know exactly how to replace the warp animation but you can bet I'd love to figure out how to do that. But for now I'm just going to take care of these sounds.

Okay this is strange. I have one sound effect which is just the beam cannon and then I have another one which is the beam cannon firing + powering down. The thing is though, whenever it finishes, it plays a clip from the beginning of the sound effect for some reason. I don't know why. I'll upload the two files and let you guys see what I mean...

If you download these sounds, do not listen to them with your volume up. They are very loud and sound great ingame.
Beam Cannons

Temporary file upload site. The one labeled 'ffff' is the one with the powerdown and the other one is just a none-stop beam sound effect. Backup your original sounds before replacing them. Play as Advent and purchase a radiant or radiance w/e it's called.

Just looking around on youtube and found this:

I remember playing that mission :< I got so scared XD I was wearing headphones too.

MrFujiKicker and me brainstormed a whole lot of bunch of ideas today over the sins IRC about this. Capships, superweapons, new mechanics, ship abilities and all that, and so far, even in the theorycraft gameverse we have, it's balanced...
I'd very much like to be a part of any Freespace mod team that may form, I can contribute with ideas, balancing, codemonkeying, maybe some modeling too(still have to learn to use anything other than Solidworks effectively) etc.

Btw if you need models there are both Homeworld 2 and Star Trek Armada 2 mods.

This will probably be a very good mod, just because it it a Freespace 2 mod.
EDIT:Sorry for the bump, I just looked at date.

Don't feel bad, this is totally bumpworthy.

Just a sound remix of the beam cannons in freespace 2 will make this mod "epic".

To be honest... I'd suggest instead of working on a FS2 Mod for this game (which admittedly, would rock - hell, maybe the Vasari are running from the Shivans  :p ), everyone should focus their efforts on lobbying the producer of the FreeSpace series to sell their rights to the franchise... Because, although Wing Commander as a series, has a special place in my heart for being the first truely awesome games of the genre (especially Privateer - that is number 2 right after FS2)... FreeSpace 2, is - in my opinion, the finest game of that type ever created (FreeSpace 1 was not quite as good - Wing Commander 2 deffinately takes position 3 though).

That said, who currently does own the rights to the FreeSpace franchise? I don't have the manual handy to check, and I sadly havent played the game in a few years. I'll send the first email if someone let's me know who to aim for  :D !

Interplay owns the rights to it. They technically aren't even around anymore and are selling most of what they owned, not Freespace 2 as of yet though.

Freespace 2....I still have that game and it's CD's. I also have the original Freespace game and its CD's. I think I might just go install and play that again later this week. :)

Would it be neat to see a Freespace mod? Yes. However, someone else will have to do it. I have my own plans for a mod I'm quietly starting to develop alone.

'Selling the rights' is worthless when the odds of anyone actually making a 90s-style space shooter are almost zero. It'd become an FPS or RTS, or maybe a really dumbed-down shooter. Hooray? :)

Space Shooter? You mean Space-Flight-Sim? There are PLENTY of people who would buy those games. If you notice - no good ones have been made in a while, just a number of cheap crappy knockoffs (really bad Star Wars games come to mind) - no one has captured the feel right since then (Freelancer did ok, but it was slightly lacking).

FreeSpace has some weight to it, you have a large fanbase that has wanted a sequel for a long time now. It's also of known quality, people would be likely to buy it on reputation... Nah man, space-flight-sims just need to be reinvigorated. Boys aged 10 to 50 still wanna be starfighter pilots on some level... Develope a good game, and they will come. FS2 was friggin' epic, now imagine it with modern technology.

If you can't find your CD's, Freespace 2 is available for download legally. Also, I think the downloadable version comes with enhanced textures and such.

WHERE??? I can't find my CDs Q.Q

I bet you a lot that it would be so much better if Volition made it instead of anyone else. (Like the people who made Freespace 2, which would make it even better).

HLPHades:

I would love to see Volition acquire the rights... since really, it's their damn game. But they've been shut down every time they tried. They just dont have the resources... the franchise is worth a lot of money.

And, yeah, where can you download FreeSpace 2 legally, from a reputable source? I know where my discs are at the moment (out of reach), but they can chill there, I'm in no rush. I wouldn't mind DL'ing FS2 if it's all legit though :)

i have the retail but dont' now where it is...
this is a 100% download... it was really fun... even MP which i do very seldom.....

looking definitely forward to a FS2 mod! Go modders Go! ;) (sorry, can't mod)
This would be a sure download by me...

and i agree with Itharus...
there are quiet many people out there who wan't to fly again...
But all the space sims i played in the last couple of years were all but boring...

remembering the good old Wing Commander 1, Privateer 1 and FS2 times!!  :CONGRAT:

I have an Idea for FS style subspace jumps in SoaSE.

-All star sysstems linked via phase lanes (no direct star to star jumps) or even better a wormholes that ale linked in pairs so you can jump between only two, not all of them.

-In systems all sectors (planters, asteroids) are linked to 70-80% of other sectors in that system (for example you should not be able to jump through star - coz it would look stupid - so sector directly opposite would not be avaliable to jump)

-In system all sectors have very little or no gravity well - this means that ships can jump away from any point of sector just like FS ships.

-sector that allow to jump to other system will have a gravity well to simulate jump node - in FS all ship jump in some distance to jump node.
If wormhole linking would be possible - then it would be greate as wormhole - that would be remodeled to jump node- would be in center of a sector - this would be perfect position for blockade as all ships would have to get away from grav well to get in or out.

Hah!

I just remembered... the first time I ever did voice chat online was in a game of FreeSpace 2... I was in a little clan called "Excalibur Squadron", and our nerdy asses were off screaming shit like "Alpha squad, form up on my wing, echelon left!" into the mic and getting all into it and what not. I have to say though, it was fun actually pulling off all of those little commands, dogfighting in formations and all that. It was a pretty damn immersive little flight-sim.

Heh, fun times.

Vasudan fightercraft were the most fun to fly, imo.

Absolutely
If someone creates a Freespace 2 mod for SoaSe they are legends this game is legend and demands to become a sins mod i can see it now the colossus under my command destroying anything in its path with its sweet beam cannons *drools* seriously some one please make a mod for Freespace 2 IT WILL BE A HIT!!! since we are on the topic anyone got the Freespace 2 SCP mod? doesn't seem to work for me ill try dling it again if anyone knows anything about send me a message thx
P.S Freespace 3 NEEDS to come out get ironclad to do it!!! lol
Reply #73 Top
Thanks to The_Regicide for continually pointing out this old freespace thread. Its full of all the info you need.

Let me know where i can help out to make this thing happen.
Has anyone mentioned it over at Hard Light? If Ironclad's import tools work, it should be pretty easy to just use the FS2 models.

It's amusing to hear people talk about how the space shooter genre isn't dead. After all, some crappy Euro games = genre is alive. :)

i am wholly in support of a freespace mod (although i am sad i cannot assist, having no experience in modding)

and just throwing ideas out there: if a freespace 2 mod conceptually causes too many problems, theres always freespace 1 (and previous history). imagine the t-v war, or operation thresher, tombaugh station, the hammer of light vs vasudans at vega, the holding actions in both antares and deneb (oh galatea, we cry for thee), the fall of vasuda prime, or the race to sol. freespace 1 might not be as epic as 2, but it still provides plenty of opportunities for massive space battles

as for shivans not colonizing planets: my solution would be to just not call it colonization. call it purging. or something similar. they don't colonize, they go down and wipe planets of their lifeforms, which involves a level of commitment similar to colonization. it also effectively claims the planet as shivan.
