What's in a name?

Hey all,

We're currently considering different names for the Vampire Lord. I thought I'd open this up to the community. What would YOU name the Vampire Lord?

Here are some of the current names being bandied about:

Lord Nosferatu
Count Nukekubi
Strigoi
Bhuta
Ramanga
Kali

Can you give us a general idea what the Vampire Lord is like, other than Vampiric?

Because I like the name "Echidna"...though that might present it effeminitely.

cthulhu =]
Wait.. but then he needs to look like one.
Oh well, adda Cthulhu!

I think we need to see what it looks like..
Is it "The Oak" concept art guy?

Lord Nosferatu is the best on the list. The other names are frankly.. nonsensical. I hate those names. I like names like "The Rook" and "Queen of Thorns" not just up names..

If you go with a real name though then "Lestat" is best I Think. Interview with the Vampire =]

/edit
Oh I know another!

Betelgeuse
It's the star, but sounds like the movie. :D So you can get away with ripping the name. :3
Not to mention.. doesn't he make beetle minions, or termit looking things, not undeads?

I wouldn't go with Kali as that is considered to be a female god, I like Strigoi or Bhuta (due to its double meaning, i.e. reality).

Also, have you thought of Rasputin?

Vampire Lord (because it sounds ok) or Lord Nukekubi (because it sounds funny if you pronounce it right).

The rest don't sound good in my opinion, and names with real words in them that are more like titles (Queen of Thorns, the Rook, the Oak) fit the game a little better.

A picture would help us decide though :D

If they're going to keep with their current trend...then...

The Devourer.

Nukekubi - Maybe it is just coincidence, but 'nukeru' = to come out, and 'kubi' = neck =P Even then, the only thing that I have heard of on the list is Nosferatu. All of the names on the list seem like they would work out fine, since you would just get used to the name kinda' like Regulus since it isn't one of those descriptive names like the Queen of Thorns or the Rook. Now, if I were to choose, I think that I would go with Bhuta just due to the sound, but some background meanings on the names would be nice.

Yeah I like thoses more.

I like the Rook because it's like the rook in chss I guess.

Personally I love names for things that are like pop culture references or turn-of-phrases. Like the TF2 achievements names and many xbox game achievements names.

And oh yeah, COUNT CHOCOLA

Which reminds me, need a map named "Thunderdome"

It's made off "The Oak" concept art, right? Or will that be for something else?

Dr. Acula

WINNER?

I still think Beetelguese is good too though.

Good to know someone that picked the name "Cowbutzex" has input on names. ;)

Calling it Anubis would be baddd. ;/

And any not easily recognizable name is bad too, IMO. :/

"Sounds good" and "pronouncible" aren't enough qualifications on their own IMO..

They need to be cool like "The Rook". =]

A name like "Dr. Acula" is much easier to remember, and is a cool play on words. So is the "The Rook", it's a 'cute' reference to the piece in chess! Fits perfectly!
Unclean Beast makes perfect sense for the unit, intuitive and easy to remember. If it was named "Shinigami" instead, how would you connect that in your mind to remember the beastly disease dirty dude is supposed to be named that? After a while of playing you'd remember, but it doesn't pop right in your head right away like Unclean Beast does.

I still like Betelgeuse though. :P It's also intuitive.

What about "Vlad Dracul"? (name of the transylvanian count that have inspired the Dracula story; sound pretty appropriate for a vampire lord I think.)

Smog.

Cruor Imbibo, Cruor apparently meaning blood in latin and Imbibo meaning drinker , so Cruor Imbibo meaning blood drinker. So one could probably use just that or make a play off of those
(according to a free english to latin translator, some of it might be different when directly translated)

As for the names being put forth in the first post, I'd say Count Nukekubi if the Vamp lord has a certain voodoo or tribal feel about him, if he's the cliche, pale-white skinned, black haired, Black cape with red lining, kind of vampire that looks quite sophisicated, I'll be somewhat pissed unless he plays insanely awesomely or if this cliche is done in an epic manner.

Throwing in for Count Nukekubi.

I don't think anything from existing mythology/stories is a very good idea. Especially the various Dracula spinoffs. Might as well rename Regulus to a Van Helsing spoof, then :P
