[IDEA] Death King Demigod

A Death King`s Primary Aura, Attack Ability, And Basic Attack

Death King Demigod

I propose an Evil (arguable!)  Death King  Demigod, something akin to a Ringwraith from Jackson`s LOTR films or a Lich King from pen & paper rpg days. The Witch-King is the preference. My case is predicated upon the following ability ideas:

1. Reanimation Aura

5 level ability
constant radius, always active

Reanimation Aura has a 20% chance to raise a ghostly form of any minion that falls while within the Aura radius, excepting fallen ghostly minions. Each spirit thus raised is invulnerable, moving at the minion`s original movement rate +25%. Damage in attacks is as it was when the minion was alive. Each spirit lasts for 4 seconds, long enough to do some additional damage.

Spirits are immune to ability effects (i.e. freezing, Plaguing, stunning, slow, etc.), including friendly buffs.

Increased levels increase an initially small Aura radius to a large sized one, as well as boosting the chance of reanimation and increasing the lifespan of each spirit. Perhaps at its maximum the chance becomes 50%, with spirit lifespan at 9 seconds.

Would be balanced by playing with spirit lifespan.

2. Striking Bolt

5 level ability
requires target

A Bolt of lightning instantly arcs from the outstretched hand of the Death King to a target. Damage is in the realm of a Torch-Bearer`s Fireball or a Regulus crossbow strike.

Swift attack - takes no more than half a second before the Death King raises his hand to fire the lightning (single tendril).

Unless the target moves out of range (medium range attack), the Bolt always hits - no misses.

Higher levels both increase damage (to medium levels, *not* to heavy levels) and introduce/refine arcing capability.

At its best the Striking Bolt delivers 500 pts. of damage and can arc to an unlimited number of targets, as long as each is within a short 'X' range of each other. High power cost to utilize, increasing as its level increases.

3. Life Force Drain

innate attack
5 level ability
always active

The Death King attacks by simply willing away the life force energies of his opponents; it is an ambient attack, versus a single target at a time, without projectile.

Always hits. Medium range.

Placing points in this ability impart drain/parasite mechanics. At level 0 (without points) the Life Force Drain only drains enemy Health/Hits at about 22 points per second (quite low for a Demigod defauklt attack).

level 1    25 pts. per second
level 2    28 pts. per second, 7 pts. per second added to Death King Health
level 3    32 pts. per second, 12 pts. per second added to Death King Health
level 4    38 pts. per second, 18 pts. per second added to Death King Health
level 5    45 pts. per second, 28 pts. per second added to Death King Health

Health/Hits added to the Death King can excede his normal maximum. Excess Health/Hits fade at the rate of 2 per second, until his normal maximum is reached. The Death King can therefore, to a limited extent, become more powerful from the deaths of his foes.

The effect/attack would be delivered constantly ala the action of ticking time, or a mileage counter in a moving car. Balanced by adjusting the rate of Drain.

I think this combination of traits has potential.

A supplemental...

The Death King would be a slow mover, unlike his physical counterparts the Torch-Bearer and Regulus.

I believe I have a good name for him, although evaluation of such a name would be dependant upon the combination of name-to-visuals: Old DuMalion.

Old DuMalion
The Old King

His appearance would be as an aforementioned Ringwraith, ancient brown cloth covering skeletal limbs. Possible, anyway.

There's already a demigod a lot like this. He was called the Vampie Lord. I think they changed the name.

He sounds like a combination of the Vampire Lord and the Oak.  IIRC, the Vamp Lord has various health- and energy-stealing abilities while the Oak does necromancy.

The vampire lord has a "turning" ability too.

But yeah I think Oak has some necro stuff.

Another possible moniker -

DuMalion The Elder

("The Elder")

Vampire Lord and The Oak? Sounds intriguing.

I think the Demigods they have come up with and have planned are perfectly fine.  They're great actually.  Giant walking castle, unclean beast, girl inside a flower carried by beatles, that crystal guy, the oak that is just walking armor.  THe only "meh" one to me is the Vampire Lord.

Another ability for the guy:

4. Cradle

3 level ability

The Death King draws friendly forces nearest him - within 7 to 11 feet (?) - into his palms & chest, shrinking them and absorbing them into a strange temporary nether-dimension. One of his arms then cradles the package of minions. This looks like minions marching up off the ground as they shrink and distort in eerie glowing lights into the body & palm of the Death King.

The number of entities that can be carried this way is determined by ability level (8 at level 1, 13 at level 2, 25 at level 3). Tier 3 is a late, high level ability.

Demigods cannot be Cradled. Enemies cannot be Cradled. Structures cannot be Cradled. Items cannot be Cradled.

Hitting the Cradle ability key again extends his Cradled arm, releasing the minions before him to resume their full normal activities.

Cradled minions cannot act (i.e. attack or heal) whilst being Cradled.

Cradled minions die instantly if the Death King carrying them is defeated - full normal minion experience values are bestowed to the destroyer who does the vanquishing, and those forces are of course lost to the Death King. Use them or lose them... .

The act of Cradling 'up' minions takes time for them to walk into his body, to be drawn into it, despite the sorcerous acceleration taking place. Emptying the Cradle and loosing the minions takes a fraction of that, with minions quickly ejected (as they march out at temporarily accelerated supernatural pace) onto valid areas of the playfield before the Death King to resume battle.

This gives the Death King a force deployment capability that would be very cool... .

5. Void Sheathe

6 level ability
always active

The Death King develops a shifting 'skin' of black light energy that provides him with increased armour value.

At times, you may observe fields of black star energy contouring the Death King`s actual body. As the ability increases, this shifting visual becomes more prevalent & frequent. (A retexturing or overlay texturew, essentially.)  His tattered robes do not take on this trait until the ability is maxxed out, whereupon the effect on those cloths is present but minimal.

Tier 1/Level 1    100 armour pts total from Void Sheathe
Tier 2/Level 2    200 armour pts total from Void Sheathe
Tier 5/Level 3    350 armour pts total from Void Sheathe
Tier 8/Level 4    550 armour pts total from Void Sheathe
Tier 12/Level 5    800 armour pts total from Void Sheathe
Tier 18/Level 6    1250 armour pts total from Void Sheathe

As noted, The Death King would be potentially a very reslient slow-moving regular size humanoid. Tough to dispatch, yet in need of lingering for a time in a combat to have a full positive effect.

6. Spectral Guise

4 level ability

The Death King may enter a temprorary state of intangibility, imparting profound Evasion characteristics for a time.

The greater the level, the more pulsatingly ghostly he appears.

Tier 13/Level 1    10% Evasion, Duration 5 seconds from Spectral Guise
Tier 15/Level 2    15% Evasion, Duration 6 seconds from Spectral Guise
Tier 20/Level 3    20% Evasion, Duration 8 seconds from Spectral Guise
Tier 25/Level 4    25% Evasion, Duration 9 seconds from Spectral Guise

Energy costs of Spectral Guise would be quite high, requiring nearly all of The Death King`s energy to activate simply at level 1. Higher levels add to that cost, although not to a degree that keeps that ratio the same. Some items and a few level boosts are necessary to adequately utilize this ability in conjunction with others. A good user of mana potions, perhaps!

Duration would likely need tweaking, although Evasion is a wonderful ability so perhaps not.

The idea to me is to allow for the potential of some awful spectre upon the battlefield, a dread presence you cannot easily get rid of. Granted, The Death King may not necessarily pack the greatest punch, but as he lingers his minions can wreak havoc. He is a creature of Death - he will not scurry or race about. He will stride, where he sees fit and as he sees fit.
