Demigod in the long run

Was thinking of buying this game, which would make it the first game I've bought new in 5 or 6 years. I usually just wait a year and get them for 5 dollars used. In many cases its not even worth it to buy a game when it comes out. For example my brother bought Left 4 Dead for 45 dollars or however much it cost and only weeks later it was on sale for 20 dollars. That's not even close to my friend, who bought that Conan MMO for full price of 50 and couldn't sell it, and saw other people begging to sell it for 5 dollars, not even 2 months after it was released. Not only price, but the overall gaming experience is much better months down the road, patches and balancing issues all dealt with. Anyway I'm getting off topic.

My main question is, what is the developer's 'plan b' for Demigod.

Let's say the game goes Hellgate London and completely tanks. Are the developers going to just dump it and move on? I feel sorry for anyone who bought that game.

Why should I buy this game now? A game of this nature can almost completely change from retail to full patched months down the line. Why should I have to pay MORE money up front to beta test the game?

Basically what I am afraid of is a game that I invest 39 dollars in, becomes something nobody plays and one can find for 5 dollars on craigslist, only in 4 months.

tl;dr version: Are the developers of Demigod planning on working on this game religiously over the next couple years (like a certain popular warcraft 3 mod)? Or am I paying 39 dollars for something that'll be pushed aside and forgotten very soon.

Excuse my post as I haven't been following the game at all nor reading the forum, so if this is something that has come up and been beaten to death please forgive me.

Really depends on which parts of the game matter the most for you.

Let's go with the worse case scenario.

We still plan to work wtih GPG to release 2 free Demigods.

There will still be free updates for roughly a year.

And all the multiplayer stuff will be heavily enhanced because it's also used in Elemental (the next game) so Demigod would piggy back on those features.

So that's your worst case scenario.

is elemental an expansion or a totally new game?

Thank you for your unbelievably quick and perfect reply. That is exactly the information I wanted to know. If that is worse case, I would love to see the game excel.

I thought I would mention that though 39 dollars does not seem like a lot, I only play games like this with my group of friends (playing with strangers is for some reason not entertaining to me). The reason I seem to fret over the price is because though its 39 dollars for me, if I had to convince everyone to buy it so we could play, that is 390 dollars combined (and I really don't want to be the person that gets picked on for the next several years because of a bad game choice, we are STILL poking fun at the guy that convinced us all to buy battlefield vietnam).

New stardock game.  Think Master of Magic, or if you are too young to remember that think super cool fantasy style civilization 4.  In other words it is Turn Based Strategy.

I think Demigod will do just fine in the long run :D

Maybe an expansion...maybe even Demigod 2 :D

ive never liked turn based strategy

id rather they make this game last years, and add xpacs to it/new content patches..last 4 games if purchased i got royally juked on

Hellgate/Age of Conan being some examples, so far only blizzard's games have lasted i had high hopes for this(still do)

I'm just wishing I could play online more...damn AI and network issues. Already preordered Elemental, can't wait for that game either, heh.

Making one game is not mutually exclusive of the other.  Stardock has been planing to ramp up production to two games at a given time in production at in house developing and 1 game per year that they publish with other developers, a la demigod.  The benefit of this is that impulse will get much better with things like team matchmaking, better matchmaking algorhythm for better balanced random teams, VOIP for team chat, and clan support.  Personally these things alone will help demigod a ton.

And don't worry if demigod sells well we will get tons of expansion material.  More maps, more demigods, and who knows what else.

Am I the only person who thinks VOIP shouldn't be a priority? I have a Vent server with my Guild Wars alliance, and Xfire dedicated chat is actually pretty stable these days.

VOIP will be part of the next phase of Impulse.

That's cool. Not saying it wouldn't be helpful; just, there's so much more I know you guys have to worry about :)

I'm in the same boat where I'm the one who recommends games to a group of 8 people.  Over the years, the games that always seems to convice them all are Blizzard games.  We are still playing WoW and diablo2.  I don't need to convice them and I'm sure they will buy starcraft2 and diablo3.

I say it's best to look at the history of the developer and publisher.  Every game that Stardock has publish seems to have lasted years.  All their games have expansion packs and ongoing support.  I see that there will probably be expansion packs to Demigod and I feel the game will last for more than 5 years with thousands of active players online daily.

that may be possible blitz, but this is a really bad launch, a lauch that went well, then somehow it stopped working a day after

and people here are already obsessing over elements, and forgetting demigod already

its really ssad when pirates get more value out of a game

Well you can all play lan and the like with just one copy of the game. You need to pay for each copy if you all wanna play online, but for lan games they wont even have to buy it.

Talk about long run-- I believe I've already played Demigod out WAY too much for my own good. Sadly, singleplayer mostly because the multiplayer bit isn't turning out as well and I've never gotten into a game successfully or at all to really experience it. I feel so ungrateful because now that I've almost played Demigod out as much as I have, I'm impatiently waiting for whatever new material will be released to Demigod, man oh maaan!

I want to know what else besides 2 free demigods we're getting.  A year of free updates just means 2 more demigods 12 months from now?

I don't even care about 2 more demigods when the current ones hardly have any build variaty.  They should have like 50% more unique skills on the current ones.

Damn the OP for reminding me of hellgate london.... what a turd that was
