How Much Are Replays Wanted?

A long time back I got naturally placed into the game admin slot for the GR.org section for Demigod when everyone else ragequit the game because of X reason.

I know no other website around will have a system like GR does for organized replays. I've confirmed that replays will have viewable Demigod stats and items, as well as citadel upgrades. They're going to be legit.

The question is, is it worth the effort to revitalize a dead section? Basically, I need to know if the community wants replays enough to put the work into it. I mean, I love Demigod to death, but I want to produce something the community will find useful instead of wasting time. I could use a lot of responses, not just a few. A simple yes would be sufficient =)

I'll be on top of their release. This is a resource I think the community can benefit from greatly.

replays will keep the community, not forgeting modding of course :).

Has anyone used Fraps to record and replay games?  Reinventing video capture seems like a waste of the devs time to me.  There's much bigger issues to tackle, improving match-making, working through bugs with 1.2, hardening security against exploits and trivial game state/desync errors.

Video capturing is far, far away from the fidelity you'll get from watching a replay. Provided the replay system is properly done, a replay can contain:

1) the perspectives of any player, at any angle you choose on top of an overall observer perspective, all switchable in real time as you watch the replay

2) item builds of each player

3) play back speed control

A video play back is the poorer alternative. On a more intangible level, replays of exciting game play can help promote the game, generate exposure and thus can encourage the community to grow. This means more sales and more funding and incentive for GPG/SD to continue to improve the game for all.

The only thing I consider more important than replays are the balance of items.

I belive more than a few percentage of the community will watch replays. In starcraft almost 100% watched replays. At least every starcraft player I have ever spoken to.

You guys realize you can watch replays already right?

Sure. With a gimicky hack, and no information that crashes 1/2 way through.

Yeah, but some replays work fine and it'd be a decent way to get a bit of traffic to the DG part of the site if people gave them a shot.

But their sorta useless Obscenitor =/

You don't see any stats, items, citadel upgrades. Its just a useless video that needs a third party script.

Well perhaps my situation is a unique one. My friend and I were bored so we decided to participate in the ESL 2v2 challenge for some mice that we probably won't even use (I'm too fond of my current one).

After the second round some people in IRC asked for a copy of the replay so I looked up how to view them and checked it out. The replay ran flawlessly and it was actually a really interesting match to watch (in my opinion). As I sat down to think out what kind of commentary would be useful whlie viewing it it just seemed natural that referring to war score instead of time and discussing my purchases and reasoning for my actions would be pretty informative from the perspective of a how-to-rook guide.

Now as a review of the entire game, if say you wanted better insight into what our opponents had purchased, how they'd spec'd exactly, that's not nearly so useful, but remembering what my build and purchaess were it is useful as an example of my rook strat in action and as just entertainment value they seem fine. I would wager a lot of people who watch replays set it to quad speed or higher and just sit back and relax, they probably don't inspect a lot of the figures presented all that thoroughly.

The current replay "system" is useless. There's just no information in it.
