The 3rd Demigod Community Tournament - Discussion Thread

The 3rd Demigod Community Tournament - Discussion Thread

I wanted to get a thread opened up for discussion on our 3rd community tournament.  I'll fill in some details later, but I'm looking for thoughts on the format, how do we make SCHEDULING work, and so on.

Quick things we know - a good chunk of the prize money from the previous tournament will be rolling over to this tourney.  We know we need to do something to fix scheduling as it didn't work all that well last tourney and led to many more dq's than were disirable.  Anyway, if you've already posted some thoughts in one of the other threads, please copy them over to this thread and add your 2 cents.

folks that are interested in playing:

I'll update this later, but just wanted to track.  OMG_Userbanned indicated in a pm that he would like to play in this tourney and said he doesn't think he'll have any issues with availability.

I really think we should at least try to look into the possibility of a 3v3 with an AI on each team.

There would have to be a couple of changes to the programming so that only one build for each demigod occurs so the game doesn't start and you go "Ah crap... we got Pounce Sedna instead of Heal Sedna... we lose."

I figure 3 games between teams, use nine different Demigods for the match... AI settings on Hard with low gold for killing the AI and we're all set.  Lets have a practice match and see how it goes sometime?

If you'll let me be your Sed support bitch, I'd love to. I don't believe it's a good idea, actually, but there is no certain way to know until we try.

1vs1 tourney will sux, in fact 1vs1 game is not a game, it is just a running from flag to flag and holding it, u can win a match without engaging your foe

and btw how do we solve problem of choosing demigods? huh? i bet 99% participants will choose rook or ub casue they are the strongest in 1vs1 especialy on cataract

Pff... spirit minion oak for the win ^_^ (but he'll be banned before the 1v1 tourney starts). Yeah... 1v1 is boring (I wouldn't participate), because matches take ages and the thing you wait for, is enemy to make a mistake... bah. Got bored even from thinking about it.

Maybe people could actually try and play a game 2v2 with one AI on each team with the settings I've suggested... and THEN say they don't wanna do it.

maybe... that definitely would resolve a good chunk of the pain involved... or should anyway. Not sure I really want to do another 2v2 tourney (eg prefer 3v3), but I'm up for whatever.

i prefer 3v3s as well, but then we'll have prolly only like  5 teams. Maybe just finish the tournament when orcun gets back?

no on 1v1's.  2v2 is fine.  3v3 is fine.  I'm not opposed to the 2v2 + 1 ai per team, but I doubt that will fly with most. I think we should start a new tournament, though, and not play out the finals in our old one.  I know IN1's spent some time recruiting, so perhaps we'll have more teams.  Anyway, if its 3v3, its scheduled and it must be over QUICKLY.

play a few 1v1's against Renz or Zen_God there actually pretty fun when played at a high level and there is literally zero room for error.

yeah... but all long games.  I can hold my own just fine 1v1 - i just don't enjoy it as much.  But, scheduling problems are about 70% resolved that way.  Anyway, no 1v1.

they're the most challenging for sure :) secret to perfection imo

Maybe we can hold a 1on1 tournament but with no price money or a really small portion at the same time? Should think about good rules here. all mirror matches, every demigod can only be chosen once or sth like that.

Guys, decide already. I cannot tell the potential participants: "You know, there is a tourney -- presumably in late Jan-early Feb, but I don't know if it's 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3, and I don't know if it's draft or point-based". I know I won't take part in 1v1, because: (1) it's going to be a series of highly algorithmic and extremely predictable matches, given comparable skill level (I mean, yes, it can sometimes become pretty interesting late game, but really...); (2) it has nothing to do with teamplay DotA-style (only better) that is DG's main attraction in my book: as a 1v1 quasi-fighting game DG is mediocre at best (matchups way too unbalanced, outcomes way too predictable, very little skill involved as long as you follow the correct scheme/flowchart). 2v2 is marginal for me, I'll probably pass, too. However, it's not a big deal, and I'd still be willing to advertise the tourney and recruit people as long as there is some kind of consensus regarding tournament rules. Just decide on the basics, pretty please. I need to tell people something.

in1 - I don't think any decisions are going to be finalized super quickly, though.  Now that the new year has come and gone and the holiday season is winding down, things will pick up speed.  It won't be 1v1.  It will either be 2v2 (if we have to) or 3v3 (desired).  All I need is a logical scheduling system to put the 3v3 option over the top (eg why will 3v3 be better this time than last time).

I think we should have a scrimmage to test out the type of weekend tourney we would like to do.  Giving new teams time to practice and us the ability to work out the kinks that plague the last tournament.

I think it's a very reasonable suggestion. Good idea, Jona.

A third tournament? So demigod is still alive

Nah, we are all undead. Pacov is an arch-lich, Renz is a vampire (obviously), and I'm just an annoying talkative mutant zombie.

OK guys.  How about a mini tournament as dry run through.  EG - think of it as a skirmish tournament and there will be no prize.  And we'd want to knock it out in 1 or 2 days.  I think 2v2 would be easiest to organize, but 3v3 preferred.

Good idea, but I suspect you are going to play it at 4 AM my time...:)
