The 3rd Demigod Community Tournament - Discussion Thread

I wanted to get a thread opened up for discussion on our 3rd community tournament.  I'll fill in some details later, but I'm looking for thoughts on the format, how do we make SCHEDULING work, and so on.

Quick things we know - a good chunk of the prize money from the previous tournament will be rolling over to this tourney.  We know we need to do something to fix scheduling as it didn't work all that well last tourney and led to many more dq's than were disirable.  Anyway, if you've already posted some thoughts in one of the other threads, please copy them over to this thread and add your 2 cents.

folks that are interested in playing:

I'll update this later, but just wanted to track.  OMG_Userbanned indicated in a pm that he would like to play in this tourney and said he doesn't think he'll have any issues with availability.

make sure you announce the tournament several weeks ago before it actually starts. Also, in 2days only a 2v2 is possible . 1week 3v3 might be. keep in mind games themselves can take a while and are exhausting.

that's fair... and I agree.

OK guys.  How about a mini tournament as dry run through.  EG - think of it as a skirmish tournament and there will be no prize.  And we'd want to knock it out in 1 or 2 days.  I think 2v2 would be easiest to organize, but 3v3 preferred.

sounds good.

sounds good!

While everyone is trying to get this set up I have a question.. considering I just bought the game recently and today noticed it has its own tourn. How would I go about signing up or is it based on how many win/losses a person has? Also noticed on one of the earlier posts (either first or second tourn one) it mentions about having an alternate.. if you can't find an alternate couldn't the team use a computer instead? (that way the rule about having alternates being in multiple teams and other things can be avoided) that would be IF you couldn't find a human alt.

Actually that comment raises a good point. A separate part of the tourney for people with < say 200 games (smurfs excluded) would be of benefit to raise interest in the game. I know numbers are limited and this idea may have logistical problems but it seems pointless to have new ppl entering a tourney vs experienced players and seeing their citadel flattened in 20 minutes. I don't think that would endear new ppl to the game. Even if say 8 (2 player) teams comprising new players could be formed I think it would make these ppl feel more welcome in dg's (small) community and they would hopefully then be good to play in the normal tourney round (if there was a) next time.

After writing this I realised that the idea of a tiered tourney has probably previously been raised and dismissed.

Ah I see. Guess I will have to continue the single player tourney to get a feeling for them all (played the demo a bit before buying) Also played Warcrafts dota but wasn't any good though.. think half the issue was i didn't play it as much as some and you had to piece together things to make an item. Speaking of items, is there a item restriction or long as you can pay for it you can have it?

Hi black,

I wasn't saying that you wouldn't be welcome to enter, I have nothing to do with the tourney. I just know that this game (probably like dota) is not noob friendly especially when playing with/against experienced players. So a separate section would make it much more inviting in a tourney format and likely better all round for the community.

Hello and I know trust me :/ theres been a couple games like that.. one of them that I got really good pretty quick winning almost every match was warcrafts custom map called Peon Wars.. orc peons built towers in a rush to destroy the fortress on the otherside which each fortress was surrounded by water.. sorry for ranting. Besides the Oaks spirit rushing the citadel bit, is there any other skills that would be disqualification worthy?

Not that I know of (apart from dg combo restrictions) but there is a separate thread dedicated to rules etc for the tourney.. best to check that out.

I don't have anyone to play with, 2v2 or 3v3. Would someone want to join me?

I'll post a replay so you can see my gameplay and base your opinion on that.

Neither do I USO. I wouldn't mind joining in a team if you want. (Also, I found the list of rules so ignore earlier question)

You bring up a very good point here, doggu. I think I've discussed this possibility briefly with Darkliath (she enjoys coaching newer players). Anyway, as far as noob experts go, we have bartek1234, Darkliath and brasher_01. I can talk to them to help us contact the newer players (there is a relative bunch of them recently -- not talking about smurfs). I think a 'noob tier' is a sound idea that can be very beneficial for the DG community as a whole for the exact reasons doggu specified.

PS: Also, how is it doggu is such a constructive-thinking and considerate guy on the forums, while all I hear from him in-game is: "QoT, shield me already, ffs!!!/Sedna, where's your heal, ffs!!!" O:) Nah, just kidding. I like playing with him, actually :)

A qot without shield = a sed without heal = an oak without shield = an ub with beastial wrath. All are teh unwin.

Well, from now on you can also say: "Erb, where are your minions, ffs???" ;)

Well I finished all the assassin demigods solo tourney besides demon assassin because its not available right now.. started generals with sed and I do know one thing.. if I get stuck with sed in a tourney match against others my team probably wont make it lol

edit: I half take back what I said.. found out she can go into tanking mode at the expense of the healing others ability so it will depend

Thanks for offering. I apreciate your hospitality, but if this tierd tournament does happen, I beleive i would be categorized as "smurf" and you would be in the noob tier, no offence at all. We've all been there. I'd be happy to play w/ you sometime though, add me as a friend in game. ( Press Shift+Tab , then friends , then add friend ).

Oh, he's soooooo charming! :inlove:

Is Arrodo your account name in game or just on here? (some games have separate names to avoid being hacked and such)

Edit: just enabled the mod that was needed for last tourney and it seems.. laggier in game now (not sure if thats just me) and also im not online.. I am still doing the offline solo tourney to try every demigod out

edit 2: Anyone else notice on the prison level where that big demon is trapped in ice.. if you swivel the camera around so top of his head is on top of screen and move it around looking at his eyes.. it is like his eyes follow you

hey fellas - its been a little bit since I've chimed in.  I've been giving this some thought and I've come up with a conclusion.  Mini-tournaments are the way to go for us.  I think we really want to do a 3v3 tourney amongst the dedicated players, but no one really wants to put in the painful hours of "waiting/hoping someone logs on."  So, I propose a series of mini tournaments.  The goal would be to have the tourney played out over either a single night or 2 days.  This way, folks know in advance that if they want to play, they must be available between X time EST and X time on X date.  I think that will be MUCH easier than what we've tried in the past.  So, as the tourney will be shorter in duration, then the prizes will also be smaller.  We still have some money from the previous tourney, so we'll decide in advance how many tourneys we want to have using that prize money, and schedule them accordingly.  This way, people lament less about who their team is.  They can just play 3-4 games in a single night and the tourney is over.  If someone drives you nuts, then you are done.  Anyway, I think this is best route for us to take.  Discuss a bit and provide some feedback.  If you fellas agree, then we discuss prize money for the next tourney AND dg selection rules.  And remember, as we are talking about multiple tourneys, it really doesn't matter if tourney 1 is X dg selection rules as long as tourney 2 has different rules.  That way, we cater to folks that are good with all dgs and also to folks that are not.  And we keep it simple.  ALL TEAMS will be required to be available at X time when we start the tourney.  If a FULL team isn't there, they are dq'd and can play in the next tourney.  Anyway, I think this will work best for us.

sounds like a plan !

side note - I think what will likely happen in tourney 3 is that I will make a decision on what we are doing and then folks will decide if they want to participate or not.  Then we can go back to soliciting ideas from the community for tourney 4 and so on. I think its a good idea to kick start the next tourney with some formulated ideas by one individual (knowing that my number 1 goal is a tourney that actually has an ending and is easy for all to participate).

I'll post some more over the next few days and we'll come up with an official format.  I expect tourney 3 will take place in February without a doubt, if not magically sooner.

Hi all, some me remember me, some may not, i havent been on DG for a long time, only just coming back to it and have to fill myself in on the tourneys. I see alot of different names from what i remember so i dont know who is who (nic changes/new players) but were there any AU?NZ in the previous tourney's and if so did the timing work out ok or was it a nightmare?

I would like to join in and particpipate but my time zone may prove problamatic??

In any case, i look forward to watching how this progresses, should be a blast!

neilo - let me start by saying - PLAY A LOT OF DEMIGOD STARTING NOW.  That said... :) I think anyone that is still around is quite willing to accept lag if need be.  If I remember right, I play with doggu from time to time, and I think he is an Aussie, but I might be wrong.  Anyway, no real connectivity issues from me to him.  The bottom line is that if you want to play, you will be welcome.  If you want to win, scrape the rust off and try to find a good team.  The good news, anyway, is that we will likely have 3-4 tournaments with prize money before we have to start soliciting prize money from the community.  Side note, prize money will be small, but I think all will have fun.

I can also promise that we will try to pick the best time for the tournament based on the user's participating.  It will likely occur on the weekend, but folks will be expected to suck it up as needed (eg, we might start when its a little late for you and run until SUPER late for you, but you WILL know that in advance before you decide to play or not - and the tourney's will be short, so you know you are only taking a sleep hit for 1 or 2 nights).  The goal will be to pick a time where ALL of us are willing to say hey, it might not be super convenient to play this on a Saturday at 3PM EST, but I'm willing to do that for the community.

hey Neilo,

Yeah I am from aus and there is also phary and drew around at the moment. Most of the aus/nz ppl that were playing when i started have moved on however. I wasn't able to play in the previous tourney as although I get a great ping to NA, a lot of northern EU and RUS receives a ping >350 so it can be problematic, especially in high level games. UK is fine ~250-300ms for me.

Anyway pm me when you log on if you want a game - maybe we can get in a 2v2 "lag free" game against phary and drew.
