I usually pick the side with the least amount of players. Maybe They should list an indicator for activity as well.

I just got this error as well. First time though. My game was this one: http://pantheon.demigodthegame.com/game/936727/ I know that one of my opponents quit, and it seems like the other one quit as well. So it might be an error when handing over a demigod control to an AI.
