Have you tried turning off the software mouse cursor? When the game was released that solved all my freezing issues as the game progressed and I'm not sure if they've fixed that in a patch by now. Its a least worth a shot.

For tech development, I typically see what the AI's are researching, and then follow up one or two paths in a focus to trade to the AI. Odds are they will spread their research a bit, allowing you to trade your higher level techs in one field for many basic techs across the other fields. I've found an issue that makes my game a little less enjoyable, and is certainly looking into. If I use the software cursor tool to make the cursor fit the game, my CPU always runs at max, causing sound/video skips at times. When I turn it to hardware, I get the regular windows cursor but without the performance issues.
