I was playing around with the saved game today and I noticed that if I just create my own upgraded freighter from scratch (in other words I don't use the "upgrade" button on the default freighter) then I can progress along with the game

That sounds very much like the CTD I am experiencing as well: https://forums.galciv2.com/312057 For me it was a Yor custom freighter. When I upgrade the default freighter, the game CTD's when the ship is built. Seems like a specific ship graphics file is my culprit, but I'm not sure which one or why.

TA version 1.91.021 (May 1st build), if I build the standard default Yor freighter there is no problem, but whenever I upgrade to a faster freighter, I get CTD every single time when the freighter is built. I haven't experienced this with any other races yet, though I haven't tried them all yet either.
