I should have clarified: it was the anti-cheating software that was messing up my antivirus. It also didn't work, since by the time I quit the game economy was shot from hacked money. I'll keep that in mind because once I move my game to MMO, I do intend to check files for tampering. One cheater can chase away 50 honest customers.

Another example of sloppy game design: Monolith. Monolith makes really fun First Person Shooters that I don't play because their sound system uses a strange MP3 codec that interferes with my PC's codecs. Every fix, change, and workaround I tried failed. That was my experience with No One Lives Forever, and the reason why I didn't buy FEAR. I haven't experienced that, but I'm not saying your f*cked in the head. I've run 3D modeling software

Draginol, you're the A.I. guy. I picked up a book, "Programming Game A.I. by Example" by Mat Buckland. Are you familiar with this book? Any good? I know A.I. is such a specialized field, one has to pretty much dedicate their programming career to it, but since I'm alone in my game development, I need to do it all, sound, programming, modeling, etc, for now. I'm hoping this book is good enough to get me started.

They don't share the work of running one program, unless that program is specifically designed to make use of two procesors. How it works is by an affinity to run in either proc0 or proc1. An executable will run on either proc0 or proc1. You can manually select which one, by setting it's affinity, or let the system decide. So, program1 runs on proc0, program2 runs on proc1. It allows you to run more and take less of a hit, but having two procs doesn't speed up the execution

Wyndstar is hitting on something as well, and that is limiting your player base via technological advancing. I have a high-end machine, at least graphically, and next year I may replace my dual core with a quad, maybe. Inflation for last year was 3.24%. My "merit" raise was 2.5%, about average. The cost of living is rising faster than the income, so entertainment needs to be sacrificed for living. I have no intention of investing in Vista at this time, nor DX10. I think both

I am right there with Desert Fox. I had an Atari 800XL, and bought a lot of software for it. But then I ran into some people who had pirated games, and then there was a program called Chipmunk that would let you crack and copy games. A friend of mine had a Commodore 64, and we ran into some people at college who had hundreds, if not thousands of cracked games. Needless to say my friend didn't need to buy games for a long time. I activel

funny thing about light is it's velocity. Velocity for most stuff in the universe is relative to somthing else but not light. so if you traveled at the speed of light and then shone a torch out front, the light would simply pool up in the torch would it not? there is only one problem here speed of light is not constant. this is why theory of relativity is still a theory In the vacuum of space, all EM radiation, i

I think what's needed is a different business model. Like what Stardock is offering? Stardock still requires a key to prevent opportunity pirates. Acceptable. They don't require the CD to be in the drive, that's awesome as I'm constantly changing disks in my drive. However, from #2, it looks like it's a one owner game. Even if someone likes turn based, they like space games,

If games don't generate sales enough because people are pirating while your arguments are well thought-out, that's still a big 'if'. what makes you think games aren't making money despite piracy? do you have hard numbers? don't get me wrong; i'm not claiming i do. it's just, this whole debate is kind of flowery without hard statistical analysis to back it up (on either side). No, I don't have any statistics,

What is causing the mass of a particle to increase? time compression? it's a matter of evolution. evolution is not teleological . Without making this a religious debate, can you prove your statement or are you just giving a knee-jerk response to something you find offends your personaly philosophy? Do you feel evol

Well, assuming evolution hasn't stopped at our current state, it's a matter of evolution. It took a few million years for humans to evolve into what we are today. Barely out of the trees and still pretty far from any divine like state. So, it's safe to assume, not in our lifetime.

I'm not in the business, yet, but here is something to consider: A market needs to be lucrative if you're going to draw talent into the back end. If games don't generate sales enough because people are pirating, that makes the game market highly unstable, employment wise. You can outsource some aspects (artwork, object modeling, etc), but someone is going to be employed by the company, maybe a programmer/software engineer, a demographic researcher, etc. However, some things ju

I thought about this and I figure, I'm getting older whether I make my game or not. So, since reading this thread and my first response, I've decided to pick up the game making again. I reinstalled VC++ 6.0, DirectX 9.0c, started researching forms of radiation and how I can model sensors (again), the speed of light and how I can model game space (again), etc. I've got some very preliminary programming ground work laid, but mainly I'm writing down notes, designing screens (rough designs

Fanboy Side Note: if you guys made a Baldur's Gate-esque RPG based on the Galactic Civilizations universe, I think I'd go insane. Something iike: "Galactic Privateer: Shadow of the Drengin" featuring a member of one of the major galactic races caught up in the middle of a giant war of expansion. . . let us find out what the little guy feels like. Perhaps that hot little Altarian from DA as a romance option also.

Ha, ya know, I tried my hand at a space combat sim, based on Newtonian and simplistic relativity physics, intended to be a MP game, but the task was so monumental and I couldn't get help. People didn't want to do a startup, they wanted in an established company. Sigh. I even worked out a coordinate system whereby I could map 1000s of lightyears down to the meter. Sigh. I started to work out the physics for vector controlled engines and jet based manuevering.<b

Here is my Tactical ground combat basic idea for GalCiv3: Tactical Ground Combat Planets are divided into territories/provinces the number of which is based on the planet’s class, each territory must be battled for. The planet is under the control of whoever controls 70% or more. We could also have the planetary combats take years as they would in real life. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Tongue.gif" bo

I agree with all that, but I think the hinge pin that GC2 relies on and should be their main focus (IOW, what they need to keep high) is the AI. The ship design is fine, I like it, but since this game is single player, the better the AI the better the game. When the computer can outwit, or throw a total surpise at the player, that game will get played over, for the what-will-it-do-this-time factor. Gamespot and gamespy seemed to really admire the AI and I do as well.

I have found more of a method then an exploit that can give you an advantage. When an opponet is about to out run you to a planet or what ever you can get there first even if they are closer if after you have hit your turn button and they are closer, if before you hit the turn again you instead click on your ship and then to where both you and they are trying to get to (either a planet or a resorce) you can move first before they do; but you have to be close enough to

When you upgrade a single ship, there's a checkbox above the list of target ship classes that says something to the effect of "Upgrade all ships of this class" Works great, but can be very expensive Yeah, I've lost games by not watching that. End up > $2000 in the hole and can't recover in time to sa

Ok, install the game, start it up. On the start up dialog/control box, where you press "play game," there is a button "update serial number" or some such. Press it and plug in your key/number character for character. You need to do this for both DL and DA.
