You accrue gold per second based on the number of gold mines your team controls plus any gold upgrades purchased at the Citadel. If you, or your minions do at least 25% damage to a creep you will get gold for the kill, regardless of your position on the map. If you are within 30 yards of any dying creep you will get exp for the kill weather you did a killing blow or not. Exp does not vary/scale - it is based solely on the level/type of the creep.
I see many people talking about the importance of "First Blood". What is the benefit of this, and for that matter any of the other kill based announcements? I have searched both this site and Google and haven't found anything. I feel like the slow guy who doesn't get the joke but laughs anyway.

I am having the same problme you describe. I usually finish first place for my team, but generally we all lag the other team by 3-5 levels and are drastically out-classed. I would like to hear others tips for Hard Tournaments as well.
