I'm currently playing a game in a gigantic galaxy with full races. I spawn next to the Altariens (sp?) and had a few wras with them before the Drath Legion, my allies, destroyed them. Here is my main ship design that kept me alive: The "War

This is from my current game as my custom race the "Solecians" using Iconian style ships: Its a raider design called the "Wasp." Its a small hull, 8/8 hp, 5 man crew, and its currently fighting a civ using missiles and armor, so it's armed with a Plasma II beam (just below those bug eyes) and uses ECM III defenses (can't re

Yes I go for asteroid bases, I cut their trade routes, and I destroy their resource mining bases. I usually have a raider designed specifically for this purpose, but I make them strong enough - when in packs - to also destroy enemy warships trying to stop them. But if their opponent is too powerful I always make them fast enough to outrun anything. If I'm tactful about it I can all but neutralize a civ using these types of ships alone. Its a bit more time consuming but sometimes I just have bigg

I tend to rely on capitol ships with good defenses. But only when I know what my enemy is using. More often than not, the AI seems to use mass drivers. So I usually make my armor and my weapons about equal on my capitol ships. I've had one large hull ship, which was an "explorer" (meant to seek out new life, not for combat) that was lightly armed and armored fight off a fleet of two heavily armed medium hulls. This was because it had the appropriate defense against their weapons. Keep in mind th

I usually use missiles because judging from what I've seen, they do the most damage when the victim is without proper defenses. I also use beam weapons a lot. Most of the time I'll have to switch to them once my enemies begin to research missile defenses. I'm a player that also uses defenses a lot, so sometimes, depending on which defenses are required, they will affect my weapon choices. For instance, if I have to defend against missiles, I won't be spending too much money, so I'll resea

Well I can't just reload the game from before because my autosave is set for every turn. The reason is that sometimes my computer gets really moody and decides to crash a game - any game - a lot. Other times though I can play for hours and be fine. I just started another game anyways so its no biggie.

Yeah I've learned to play without mega events and without minor races (the Jagged Knife is a minor race, right?) because a few of my games have already been completely ruined like that. As has been said, I understand that experienced players need that stuff for a good challenge, but I find them extremely annoying. I was just playing a real nice game where I was isolated and building a good navy and things were going great, but then I hit the turn button and the "peace keepers" showed u

Most of the time early in the game I just get my two original planets and mining bases while cutting all military production and balancing research and social. I tend to go with extremes. It really depends on what my race's starting abilities are, though. My best game was probably when I used my custom race - the "Solecians" - with maxed out research abilities. I played the game generally normal, with a more or less balanced approach on the sliders and planet space usage. I was just ab

Hey I'm pretty new to the game, so I'm still trying to figure out some things. What kind of stuff do you guys do to stimulate trade income? My custom race that I use a lot are super traders with trade abilities as well, but even with maxed out trade routes it seems my trading income should be more. Any tricks, or maybe something I'm overlooking? I've researched it a little and unless I missed something I still don't know why my trade income is low. Just for a general figure I usually only get up

It all depends for me. Usually I find that when I'm in a big map game and theres not too much going on I spend a lot of time designing ships. But even when I'm trying real hard to win, I still spend at least a little effort to personalize my ship. I'll never just use the already made templates. I think the ship designer is one of the biggest parts in this game, and one that really sets it apart - at least for me - from other strategy titles. I also spend time carefully naming the ships

I'd like to see more depth overall, but mostly in the combat screen. Other games like Rome: Total War, for example, allow you to choose formations, who to attack, where to go on the battle screen map (in our case space) and stuff like that. With the current galciv battle screen you can't even choose to withdraw if you're losing. If that was available then speed would play a much larger role in the game. Faster ships could engage/disengage at will. This could make for hit and run tactics, which a
