The ugly: Ability cooldowns share a single timer. It absolutely makes no sense to pick two abilities that generate a similar effect, like push, lift, pull. Once you use one, you can't use any other due to the cooldown - and the tactical differences are minor. Even different types of abilities share the timer, like biotics and engineers.

If you're going for early conquest, then pick Myrran and choose the Dwarves. Their cheapest units are swordsmen, which are the strongest low tier units in the whole game. You thought trolls were tough? Dwarves eat them for breakfast. Pick warlord or slap heroism on a unit and you can conquer myrran cities right from the start.
