I have the exact same problem as well. I'm running an 8800GTX and after a while my monitor would just go blank. I updated my old drivers to 182.50 (the latest 185.85 render Left 4 Dead unplayable), and now instead of a black screen the game will just hard lock my computer after a couple hours of playing.
