Okay, here's a fairly important question on the original topic: under what conditions do you actually get 60K points? I've gotten about 40k points twice, am i just not finishing the game quick enough? If so, what's the cut-off point for 60k? And for the freighters, if you trade for another civ's freighter, what planet is it conisdered to be from when it establishes a trade route?

NewfyScotian: The early scout thing is a usefull tip, thanks. I tried boosting my speed bonus up to +2 from +1, it helped a little, but i am also having a lot more trouble with the diplomacy because of the reduced diplo bonus =P About two hours into the new game, and i think i'm stable finally, but not close to an Alliance. I did look through the forum for MASO tips, which is why i'm doing as well as i am. However i didn't find anything about how to beat gigantic quickly, hence my curre

I took speed +1 and Dip +60 (+20 more for populist party.) 2 hours in i don't think i'd even met everyone yet, and certainly hadn't recovered enough in tech to be able to bribe them all to close. That _might_ be possible at the point i'm at now, about 6-8 hours in. Sure, it's _possible_ to finish in 2-6 hours since there are people clearly doing that. However without some kind of idea of what to do differently than i'm doing now, it doesn't really help me much to know that. An

That seems kind of like cheating. Do you even get metaverse points of you use mods? That seems like it would help with the morality question, but not with the how to win a Gigantic MASO game in six hours or (a lot?) less.

After realizing that the medium difficulties were getting pretty easy to beat, i decided to take a crack at Masochistic. I read through the current MASO threads and got some usefull tips, but they're all either really old, or foucsed on tiny/small galaxies. So i started out on tiny and did pretty well, then tried small with a one planet strategy and managed to win that one too with some minor cheating (ctrl-Ning for a much better start than i was expecting, and no, the Torians did _not_ just und

Lord Kiron: Thanks for the tip about Athlons, at least i know why it's such a pain now. As i said before, i've tried setting the CPU cycles up to 13000 which helps some but not a lot. It also maxes out my CPU even with Frameskip set to 10. The turning off sounds and music doesn't seem to help much unfortunatly. Guess my CPU is just too slow. GameHat: I tried setting both EMS and XMS to 16 megs (the max) but i still get the "need at least 2700 kb of expanded memory" message. However i do

There's been a lot of random discusion about playing Master of Magic on current machines, and i've picked up a couple tips from those, but i'm still having problems. Most people seem to agree that DosBox or VDMSound is the way to go. DosBox is working for me, but it is painfully slow, even after boosting the CPU cycles to 13000 or so, and there's also no sound. Not only is VDMSound supposed to fix the sound issue, a lot of people have said that games run a lot faster under it t

lokiju: You bought a used copy of the game, and are upset that Stardock won't let you download the pre-release beta's, and instead will only let you download the patches. Your response is "screw them," you're never going to buy another (used) Stardock/Strategy First game again, and instead you're going to buy (used) games from other companies that.... won't let you download the pre-release betas and will only let you download the patches. This makes sense how?

LifeWish: Resource starbases were one of the primary original uses for starbases, the maintenance is designed to decrease starbase spamming in your home sectors. If the maintenance discourages the starbases primary purpose, i wouldn't consider it a success. Vorlin Varelse: I have yet to see an explanation of how making it so that "Nothing" doesn't actually cost anything is unbalancing. It shouldn't affect things with the computer at all since they would get the same be

Whichever limits are put on starbases, the ones on Resources should not be affected! That's a big failing with the current system. And is maintenance or anything like that needed anymore? They've put in limits for how much benefit you can get for production bonuses on planets, which is the main thing that caused ISS for me. And as someone else pointed out, the maintenance punishes people for putting trade enhancing starbases on long trade routes and reward those who make very short rout

" Or maybe game designers should be a little more straight-foward when it comes to game mechanics. One thing I don't like about GalCIv is how there is all these hidden mechanics and factors that make or break the game. At least in a TBS like HOMM3, I would know *why* I lost against the computer. In this game, its hard to improve your strategies since you don't know how the AI had better ships or such huge influence." It's pretty easy to check out. Look at the base ship stats. Look at th

Okay, i can't resist. Gore never said he invented the internet. He said in an interview "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." It still sounds a little strange out of context, but it was understood that this was meant in terms of appropriating funding. However just taking the quote out of context wasn't good enough for the media, so they had to _lie_ and change the wording as well. http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.htm

I haven't done extensive tests or calculated the math out, but the general observation is that all starbases always take bloody forever to heal, no matter what tech level you're on. In 1.2 more than half of my starbases are always sparking because my ability to increase their max hitpoints always outstrips their ability to heal. And as far as i can tell the +1% repair ability is a waste of time. Sure you could stack it, but with the new maintenace fees in 1.3 you can't afford enough sta

There seems to be some potentially nasty consquences to researching too much weapon tech vs. deense tech in that case. Say you have a ship with attack 10, defense 20, and through research and resources and such you get it up to 29/30. That's great, effectively you have 44 attack (29 attack + half defense) Then you get another 10 percent to attack through some means, the stats become 30/30, and you effectively lose 14 attack points.

They speak out about issues they belive in, you and i speak out about issues we beleive in. In a certain sense whether or not there's a reporter there taking notes or running film for an interview isn't an action they are taking, it's an action the reporters are taking. Wow, another political thread =P So, my thoughts in brief: The Dixie Chicks have the right to critisize the President or say anything else they want. (With the usual exceptions of "Fire!" in a crowded movie theatre, etc) Everyone else has the right to choose to buy or not to buy Dixie Chicks records, or burn them, or buy them and then burn them although that would be rather stupid. Despite the fact that everyone has the right to do that, choosing to say that

Well, themost important factor is that you can theoretically find planets with a base PQ of 35. This is what we've been told. I've never seen a planet over base PQ 23, but they're supposed to be out there. The other big thing is the Precursor Event, which increases a planet's quality by 50% (and every other planet within a sector or two as well i believe) So take that rare event, and if it happens to occur, and it happens to occur next to an incredibly rare 35 PQ planet, then y

Clearly either the other AIs have expanded too much for me to be able to build power at an equal rate, or i just suck, cause like i said, i'm at 60 tech and an abysmal level of military. I've recently been pumping out Star Fighters to try and build my miltiary score, but that's causing my net revenue to plumet =P If i can manage to get an aproximatly equal military force with the other AIs, then i'll research the Universal Translator and start trading.
