Another factor that comes into it is what % of their total trading is with you. You'll find it's easy to ally with somebody who's at war with everybody else but you, since all of their trade income is coming from you. I've tried to nail down exactly what the requirements are for a "Close" relationship without success.

12bc is your highest trade route ever? I've seen much much higher. Longer routes can climb much higher, 12bc does sound about right for some of the shorter routes. 2 things you seem to be missing: 1. Each route may only be 12bc or so, but you can have multiple routes passing through the same system (therefore affected by the same starbase). 2. You can add more modules that boost trade to starbases. You should be able to boost trade much more than 10% with a maxed

So in other words....I could, in theory, trade a whack of my freighters to a minor race...and they could then form trade routes with me with the very same freighters the next turn? I haven't managed to get this to work yet, but I read a post by Za H on another thread stating how it's possible to lead a minor race into doing all it's trading with you via intelligent freighter trading (trade freighters to them that are sitting right beside your best planets).

If I trade a freighter to the AI, what is considered to be the "origin" planet for that freighter? In other words, can I quickly nab an AI trade route by building a freighter, parking it outside my planet, and trading it away? Or does the freighter have to return to an AI planet first and "reset" it's "origin", and then return to my planet to set a trade route? I tried this once with the Drengin, and they just moved their newly traded freighters back to their own planets and kept them

The square root multiplier seems to suit missles better. They are ranked a little low with the linear system. I personally don't mind that missles can be rooted out with fighters. It gives fast moving units a purpose...to do strike down missles before they can pose a threat. Missles are very powerful when you look at their cost, and consider that they are pretty much assured to at least damage stronger ships if not destroy them outright. I think the game should a bit of a r

I think it boosts the economy but also lowers morale somewhat...so you might have actually hurt yourself because your morale might have fell through the floor. I generally find that after a government switch I have to play with the tax slider a bit to find the new sweet spot, and then I see a small boost in revenue. I find the greater production capacity to be the bigger benefit from the better governments, really. Because you can spend more money under higher governments, you might see your

IF this never gets adressed in the near future, I'm just going to mess around with the data files and do my own in-game balancing. It would mean increasing the cost and HP of fighters/corvettes, increasing the offense of defensive type ships like the Axe, etc. Where I'd like to see the military of the game is this: 1st category: Light Fighters Star Fighter, replaced by Corvette, replaced by Pheonix (Pheonix needs major reworking) Purpose of this category:

Just an update here...it seems to matter not only what % of their income you account for, but also what % of their overall trade as well. I had a recent game where I managed to have the Dregs be Close with only 26% of their income dependant on me, while the Torians were not Close depite having 30+% of their income coming from trade with me. The difference? The Dregs ONLY source of trade income was me (26% from trade, 26% from me) while the Torians were trading heavily with the Arceans as well

Because starbases give a straight + bonus and not a +% bonus to attack and defense, they actually work best with ships that aren't the most powerful available. I admit that Corvettes can be useful when combined with this tactic...but having starbases around isn't free anymore ;) At any rate, it is silly to scare the AI away with just the most basic unit in the game. You do run the risk of getting a random event that forces you into war...but other than that it's very possible to not

@ Friend Josh: Name of the thread is New Masochistic Strategies? on the GC Strategies section of the forum (click on the tab just below the Galactic Forum tab). Za H makes a long post somewhere in that thread full of great advice.

Using it as a linear multiplier could cause trouble when dealing with Missles, although I suppose some special exception could be made for them (as it is now...they no longer count for their full attack value for determining your military rating). Point well taken about using weak ships in combination with starbase attack bonuses. Because the attack bonuses from starbases are + and not +% based, they actually do give pretty good boosts to weaker ships.

@ Ellestar: Sounds like a good suggestion in theory, but I'm guessing that it would be very difficult to code and implement. If there's anything in this game right now that needs fixing, it's this IMO. It's sad to scare an empire with Dreadnaughts into paying you tribute when all you are packing is Corvettes.

Morale doesn't make a huge diffence in population growth if it's between 58-99. 100 Morale, on the other hand, means a large boost to pop. growth. I've played a lot on genius+, and I don't usually worry too much about population growth. I worry more about grabbing enough systems, and the population thing will take care of itself over time. One little tip that people overlook...build a transport or two, and use them to ship people from your overcrowded planets to the less cr

I couldn't agree more that the military strength determination needs a desparate fix. I posted a thread on the other section of the forum under "Suggestion Re: Rebalancing the military game" regarding this topic. If anything needs fixing very soon, it's this.

1. The movie was good, but not amazing. Better than the first X-men easily though, IMO. 2. I'd personally say I'd have no problem with kids about, oh, 10 and over or so seeing that movie. There's violence, but the gore factor was pretty mild. 3. I personally think the actress who plays Jean Grey puts the rest of them to shame...but Halle Berry isn't chopped liver either. Rebecca Stamos does nothing for me when she's all covered in blue and looking all freaky-deaky...but s

I've yet to have ships gifted to me by AI friendlies unless: 1. I'm already at war. 2. I'm at war with the most powerful AI race at the moment. I've also received ships as gifts from neutral AIs under these conditions, so again I haven't personally found relationships to be highly crucial...but it would seem your experiences have differed. Thanks for the feedback.

I've found in my last few games I care less and less about what other races think of me if I'm not going for a Cultural or Diplomatic victory. It seems to matter far more how my military stands. If my Military rating is high, then no one dares bully me even if they hate my guts. If my Military rating blows, then even my best buds will be knocking on my door asking for tribute now and then. I have noticed that those that hate me ask for tribute more often than those who don't, but my point is

I've been very happy to see some attempts made in this area already, such as the recent change to the Battle Hammer. To me, though, the Hammer should be the next step up in defensive ship technology from the Axe...and it's not. Nor is it feasible to make it a high defense/low attack ship because of what's IMO the BIGGEST problem with the military side of the game right now: The way that Military strength is calculated. Right now, it's just simple addition of the attack value
